I see that the new MG5 has a 2.2kW V2L facility, which sounds great - but I'm just wondering whether I'd ever use it. For canvas campers I can understand the possible appeal, but those days are long gone for me.

If it was V2H I would certainly want to use it to load shift from my solar panels in addition to (or instead of) existing batteries.

What other uses do folk think they would actually use V2L for ?

Outside power when hoovering out the car, in the event of a power cut for a few core items, and the occasional brew when on long journeys.

Largely a white elephant as it will sit on the car unused in its present form. It seems useful to some who like to brag on Twitter. If you’re more adventurous and outdoorsy then yes definitely.

Just a thought you go camping and are on site with no power hook up and you want to use the V2L from the ZS for all your camping needs. As I understand it the car has to be switched on to use the V2L. Does that mean when it has gone dark the car would be effectively unlocked in ready mode and the DRL's on. Ideally you pull up put the car into V2L mode plug in your V2L cable lock the car and no DRLs on. I believe Tesla have a camping mode that addresses this issue I wonder if this would be resolved on the ZS. Im only going of what i have read.

Once the V2L connection has been established you can power down and lock the car.

If you want “camping mode”, or other Tesla features, spend £60,000 and get a Tesla - just going on what I have read :)

A side note: Tesla don’t currently provide V2L.

My tumble dryer is in the garage where my car will also be kept. If I can charge my car on the cheaper off-peak rate, and then plug my dryer into the car during the day, it would save money. However, I don’t use the dryer much, so it would take a heck of a time to recover the cost of the V2L lead. I doubt I will bother to use the facility.

The required connector is available on eBay for about £45.00.

Just plug it into your car and then plug your tumble dryer into it.

Note that the link is for a ZS EV connector. Others are available for supporting EVs.

@MichaelJHunt
So you just plug your charging lead into that adapter, and your appliance into the 3pin? Or is it just the adapter straight into the car? I thought you had to have a special discharge lead.

It’s certainly would be worth it at that price!

Have you used one?

You plug the connector into the car, you don’t use your charger lead. You then plug your appliance into the 3-Pin socket on the connector. You can also plug in a normal 16 Amp fused extension lead to run other devices.

There is nothing that is really special about the connector.

The 460 Ohm resistor in the connector informs the car it is a discharge connector and the car does the rest :)

Yes, I have one and it works fine :)

Note that I have the ZS EV so can only comment on that car.

Maybe the same thing happens when set to discharge as when you charge - a momentary pause when you lock/unlock the car, and then the charging/discharging restarts?

Its free battery storage if you have solar panels, can then run the house from the car at night
It's vehicle to load - not sure you can run the house from it - a fridge, freezrer - dishwasher or even tumble dryer - but not everything in the house. How would you hook it up to the mains circuit?

I would hope you could not just hook it up to your house without anti-islanding protection!
