Nov 17th Budget - Tax impact for EVs

Would be interesting to know how many people's primary motivation for an electric car was the environment and how many were running cost savings?

There are obviously people that still have ice cars as a second car and some that have 2 EV's, I am one of them, 1 EV 1 ice, I will hopefully go to 2 evs' soon.
As soon as the wife and I are able we will cut that to 1 car, not for the environment but purely for cost savings.
I don't think anyone should be playing the environmental card just because it now suits their circumstances to use that arguement. If we were all being true environmentalists none of us would have a car of any type, let alone 2, we would all walk, cycle or use public transport, most don't because of convenience of jumping in our own transport and going where we want when we want.
I do what I can to do my bit but I won't pretend to be outraged if someone doesn't agree with me.
Things were always going to change with EVs tax, free charging etc) more EV's less revenue and the country is on its arse, for a variety of reasons, that we are all aware of and probably bored to death off.

It couldn't continue unfortunately there are always people who will be unhappy, a lot of these people are also the ones who for years hogged Tesco chargers near their houses and did full charges with their cars every other day ( we will all be aware of people who did that) it was never meant for that and ruined it for the people who just genuinely wanted a top up.
Life goes on things change, I'll still drive an EV.

Morning moan over!

£165 pa = 1 cup of coffee per week or in London 23 pints per year
I am SO glad that I am not the only person in the world who equates things in pints of beer! :)

However, VED is one thing, but the hole the governemnt has to fill is (approx.) £1400/year per car assuming 50% of new cars registered in 2025 are electric - so expect further announcements on this in the future, yes, VED will be added (which is right and proper), but there will be other taxes aimed at EV drivers too to plug that gap - only time will tell what they are.

Neither - for me EVs make better cars and everything else is a bonus.

That was my point - it started as taxpayer's money but taxpayers lost control of it after that. It isn't taxpayers choosing how it is spent.
It never has been. Taxpayers don't have the ability to chose how their tax is spent other than via the ballot box every now and again; it's always been a relativly small group of civil servents who advise whatever flavour of government is in place on how to achieve (or not) the targets they set as part of their manifestos who really control the tax spend.

Exactly, just like it isn't your employers money any more after you get paid, and they can't tell you how to spend it. :)

Oh dear, so you are one of those are you? No need to waste any more time debating with you then. :(
lol Indeed, in defining people as 'one of those', there isn't really a 'debate' when one side feels the need to descend to the lowest denominator.

I think we have wandered far off the point here and reopened an earlier conversation with someone else. I don’t know who you are arguing with but it isn’t me.

For me - I still have an ICE (diesel subaru, super practical and not at all inefficient), but have ordered an MG4 which will be come the primary car. Would probably not have gone for another car, except for that fact that this is on a company salary sacrifice scheme and thus the value is very hard to argue... Anything to take money out of the taxman's pocket :D

Excellent remarks and very well articulated. I'd add flying to have nice foreign holidays into that mix too.
The card you referred to as an amusing, but oh-so-typical shut down debate remark, as you highlighted so well. Now overused to the point of ad nauseam.
But often showered in a veil of hypocrisy- born-again Greta's forgetting the miles they've ploughed over the last decade (since EVs have been available) in their what are amusingly now called 'ICE' cars, maybe small mickey mouse trips too, all while taking a trip to the local travel shop, or punching the buttons on Expedia, arranging their latest foreign get away...yet still preaching at others :D

Not everyone is going to become carbon neutral overnight but at least it demonstrates that there is a modicum of acceptance of the need for change, even if some old habits are hard to change.

This is why I prefer the argument that reducing local tailpipe pollution is the better emphasised environmental challenge.
