Not an MG

In this podcast, we’re discussing the MG4 software updates, MG5 facelift now available, delivery updates and 2025 Tax changes, public charging and the general thoughts on the economics of EV ownership.

And we answer your questions.

Set your reminder for 7:30pm Monday

I will be very interested in the car tax changes. I chopped in my Skoda Fabia diesel with £0 tax for my MG5.I also have an Octavia and the tax on that is only £30 so not happy at paying over £100.

Many of us are cheerleaders for MG and want the brand to do well but I hope the podcast will also recognise some of the reported issues.

I hope and expect to hear something about the MG4 leak, the effectiveness of the new breather and whether this will now be fitted to all cars. The MG4 under-tray bulge and plans to rectify, and the reported incidents of drivers being trapped within their car when key fob has failed.

Please tell us that MG care and explain what they are doing to satisfy existing and potential customers.

Did anyone watch the podcast yet in its entirety? Were there any updates regarding issues or still radio silence from MG HQ?

There was a lot of information and Miles mentioned a few updates. What car have you got?

I've scanned through most of it but wasn't concentrating as much as I should because the football was on at the time. The suggestion was that the new breather had resolved the MG4 leak issue but I don't think there was any commitment to install this to new cars or those already on the road unless owner complains of the issue.

Unless I missed it, the warped under-tray and cases of people getting locked inside their cars were not mentioned.

There were 150 odd people watching live and no doubt a good number more will have watched it on 'catch-up' so I'll be pleased to be corrected on this.

The concept of these podcasts is a good one and serves to 'inform and entertain' owners and prospective owners. I think we are all here to learn and get excited about our new cars so in general I don't mind the cheer-leading and positive spin, but it is a bit disingenuous to ignore 'difficult' questions posted on the live feed or pretend real issues experienced by genuine owners are not there.

To be fair, some of the contributors, Les for example, do say it as they see it, but at times it feels a bit too much like an infomercial.

What is with promoting the Ora Cat sister channel on the podcast? Preferably stick to MG, otherwise signpost good channels/resources for people interested in researching which EV if any meets their needs.

The podcast isn't stage managed.
Stuart issued an open invitation to all if you wish to contribute:

I understand your concerns, but this is the MG community forum and podcast. We don’t represent the MG organisation. We’re a collection of enthusiastic owners plus one dealer, Miles, who has more information and expertise than most, but who is also not privy to inside company information and who is not allowed by MG to share some information.
Because the podcast is made up of owners, we share your concerns but don’t necessarily have all the answers.

Fair comment. Your response is appreciated Stuart. It can't be easy to achieve a sensible balance between cheerleading and unreasonable criticism. We all probably have different views as to where that balance point should be, and for what its worth, this forum generally seems to do a pretty good job.

Having an 'insider' like @Miles Roberts CG involved is an asset to the podcast. At times it seems he is in a difficult position due to the lack of communication from MG and sensitivities of some of what he is privy to. His comments about the car's occasional tendency to try to kill its occupants might have been slightly ill-judged, but most of us recognise it to be a joke, and was at least recognition of a real issue and necessary for us to confidence that something will be done to rectify issues.

Setting, and keeping to agendas including the dealing with comments from the floor is not easy. My personal frustration is that time is sometimes given to responding to fairly trivial questions to which answers are readily available via the forum, and yet significant safety issues or realistic reasons for rejection were not.

Only 2 of us suggested discussion points on this thread prior to the meeting, so it is not that you were swamped. It is an editorial decision whether these are tackled or not. Maybe there are good reasons why these topics may have been avoided? Maybe it is because you want to give sufficient time to a topic at a future podcast?

If there is no news on a topic, then there is nothing to talk about.
I'm sure we will circle back to the under-tray issue.

We're not ignoring any questions. In fact, the team do a great job of answering questions in the chat live. And don't forget, the team are genuine owners and have the same concerns. There is no discussion prior to a podcast about what not to talk about. Nothing is off limits unless it's Miles who can't speak about a particular subject if he wants to keep his job. But as I said above, if there is no news on a topic, we may not talk about it. It's safe to assume that if there is significant news on a topic and it hasn't previously discussed, we will discuss it.
To be fair, some of the contributors, Les for example, do say it as they see it, but at times it feels a bit too much like an infomercial.
I'm struggling to understand this point of view. Excluding Miles, none of the podcast contributors have any reward for participating other than the pleasure of doing so. If their enthusiasm comes across like an infomercial then I find that a bit odd.
We've always been transparent about what Miles does for a living and grateful that he gives up his time to join the podcast. I don't think it's all about selling cars, either. I have met Miles and he has a genuine passion for EVs, encouraging EV adoption and for the MG brand as well as being a genuine and likeable chap. I think this comes across in the podcast, too, but maybe not to everyone.
Miles does gently promote Chorley group sometimes and I think that this is acceptable in exchange for giving up his time.
This is not a Chorley Group podcast, either. If a any representative of an MG dealer wanted to join the podcast from time to time to share their experiences and information, they would be most welcome.

That's my third forum www.mgevs.com which I hope will grow like this one has. It's maybe 30 seconds of promotion which I'm going to continue to have while using my Monday evenings for the podcast.
most of us recognise it to be a joke
Yes, I hope so. Miles has a great sense of humour, though some people need humour heavily signposted.
My personal frustration is that time is sometimes given to responding to fairly trivial questions to which answers are readily available via the forum, and yet significant safety issues or realistic reasons for rejection were not.
Ok, well the question may not be trivial to the person asking it, and not everyone watching is necessarily a member of the forum. Yet. And we have discussed rejection reasons in previous podcasts and it makes no sense to repeat ourselves every time. But I'm going to take your feedback on board for future podcast running orders. (We have a running order document which we use to organise our talking points).

Topics aren't avoided, specifically. If someone asks about them in the chat, we're likely to talk about them. It's just that we discuss the topics which are relevant at the time and that we have something new to talk about.

I hope this answers your questions.

Just to add to what Stuart has already said here...

I'm not actually on commission in my role at Chorley Group, so whether people buy cars from CG or not doesn't really make any financial difference to me (although clearly, my role is funded by the profits of the business, so my long term future does depend on CG selling cars!).

Unfortunately, there will be times when I can't divulge information (or have no information to give), other than suggest that a customer returns the car to their dealer for investigation if they feel they have a fault.
