Very disappointed that MG downgraded the MG5 charger spec for the UK market.
Any aftermarket services to retrofit/install a 22 kW in-car charger?

Where would you use it to get back the cost of the upgrade, why not just use a rapid charger.

Because AC 22KW's are generally much less expensive than the rapids (theres a 22KW around me for 33p/Kwh, compared to the rapids that are nearing £1/Kwh) , not to mention you can leave the car on a AC and it will not just charge to 100%, but it will charge to 100% and balance the cells. Compare this to an AC where regular use will necessitate regular balancing and some cars don't want to be charged above 80%.

It's also worth noting that fitting a 3 phase 22kw charger to your house is not overly expensive (if a 3 phase power source is close to you) compared to fitting a Rapid DC charger that are generally £10K+ and then you will need a 200 Amp supply anyway

The apparent decision from MG UK or whomever that the UK is mainly single phase so 3 phase charging is not necessary is quite baffling to me, considering 50% of the AC chargers I use around me are 3 phase.

I have 3 phase and a 22kW Zappi.
I took delivery of an MG5 in April intending to replace it with the facelift MG5 being sold (in EU) with a 22kW in-car charger.

I'm also a bit disappointed about the 7kWh on-board ac charger. There's plenty of 22kWh chargers around which I could use, but plugging in and getting only 7kWh renders them practically useless. It is penny-pinching by the manufacturer and they need calling out on it,. It can't just be coincidence that the facelift model got revised headlamps and rear courtesy lights.

You should be getting 11kWh on a 3 phase 22kW charger; if you aren’t its because your cable only handles one phase.

Do you have any idea of the component costs of a 22kW inverter?* And how many people in the UK would benefit from it?
Less than 10% of UK properties have 3 phase, and the cost of installing it can be prohibitive (£20k+ in my case). Most EV owners charge at home because it's cheapest and 7kW charges most batteries overnight. 22kW is an odd rate of charge being too slow for mid-journey top ups (adding about 80 miles per hour) but embarrassingly fast for destination charging as you have to move the car after a couple of hours.
* About £1k - a lot on a budget car.

I hear you but as someone who cannot have a home charger I would like the 11kw as there are quite a few of them around me. Would also mean when I am grazing eg while at the supermarket I could get more charge in a shorter time.

No, this is incorrect.
The charging for each phase is 32 amps. we run on 230v nominal. so 32 x 230 = 7360w i.e. 7kw.
So 3 phase is 3 x 7360w, = 22080w i.e. 22kw.
You will only get 7kw on a single phase.

not trying to be condescending, just trying to explain. If somebody thinks im wrong please do say, im not an electrical expert.

You’re right that it won’t work for the MG5 in the UK (MG have confirmed that there isn’t a 3 phase charger on the UK spec vehicle), but you’re also wrong that 3 phase always has to be 22kW. The EU spec MG5 has an on board 11kW charger, capable of working at 32A on one phase or 16A on three phases.

Thanks, Missed the detail that the inverter was only 16a on 3 phase. 11kw, vs 7kw, Not missing much really, even if one is 50% faster , its still too slow to be useful for charging at speed.

To follow up, I can confirm definitively that the MG5 facelift can charge at 11kW — here it is on a 22kW charger using a 3 phase cable.

Thanks, I wasn’t sure if it’s worth investing in a type 2 22kw charging cable.
I did, because you get the best of both worlds. Will work at 7kW on a 7kW charger and 11kW on both 11kW and 22kW chargers. Especially if goi g abroad this can matter — imagine using a French 11kW charge point with a single phase cable, you’d only get 3.5kW (single phase 16A)!

Hi All

First EV (not delivered yet!) - first post!

I'm pleased I saw this thread as I was floundering around the internet trying to find the information above.

I have a new MG 5 Long Range on order, and looking at Type 2 cables. I'm thinking of getting a 3 Phase 22kw version, mainly for the odd time I might be travelling and need to use a 22kw or 11kw charger (we are planning a trip to Northern France in the summer).

I take it from szymon's post above a three phase cable would also work with one phase power (7kw) from a wall box at home (also not ordered, and might get a tethered option...but useful to know).

Am I missing anything?! Thanks in advance!

Hey

I have the MG5 Facelift. I can confirm it comes with a 11 KW (max) AC charger but you will need a 3 phase cable to get this speed.

I know this as I had a single phase cable which capped out at 7. Now I have a 3 phase and get ~11KW

Regards
