MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

So 200mls lost in 6 weeks, I wonder if there are still any owners out there who have the leak and still haven't noticed

Got my car sorted today for the breather mod. No idea yet if the "fix" has worked (too soon and not enough miles) ... what I do know is that they topped up the oil by 0.2l. (I assume that the bulletin - TB057A - says to refill the oil to a specific level mark, and it took 0.2l to reach that mark). I don't know what level that mark represents, but I am assuming that it is to reach 0.9l as per the original specification.

This suggests that I have lost 0.2l* of gearbox oil from the initial leak and in the 6 weeks since I reported it.

I'll update my poll result in a few weeks once I know whether or not the mod has fixed it.

* if the refill was to 0.75l then the oil lost may have been 0.35l
When I first got my car the oil had been lowered to 0.75l but still leaked when I'd driven a few hundred miles. When the new breather was fitted they refilled to the original 0.9l. I didn't think to ask them how much oil they had actually added.

Got to be careful though ... some may read your comment as "33mls leakage per week, so 27 weeks from when I got it until it's empty" whereas the reality may well be "200mls lost over a period but it then stopped leaking". :)

If it stopped leaking that has to be a positive, would mean there would probably be more than enough oil left to prevent any issues arising from the leak (other than a mess on folks drives)

Latest oil leak poll figures over the last 2 weeks are

42 do not are have not seen a leak. Up 1

7 had a leak but it was just over filled no change

40 have a leak but don’t know the cause. Up 3

3. Have a leak but it is more serious No change

8. Had a leak but it has been fixed with the new breather No change

Also, it might run dry in a couple of months since it definitely does not stop leaking when the oil level drops. Still beyond me how this is not proactively fixed.

Never was an overfill ,that was just a ruse to pretend there wasn't a design fault . They seem to be showing up more and more now cars are going back in for the SW recall.

Exactly that. When I spoke to the dealer about the oil leak issue, he told me that it was all down to overfilling by someone at the factory.
Needless to say that I told him about the Breather mod...

Hello! I’ve just had a look at my drive and there are patches of something dark all over the drive. Just wondering if I have the oil leak issue. What is the best way to tell and what does the dealer need to do to fix it. Apologies that the information is probably all available in this thread but there are 105 pages of comments so having issues finding the answers. TIA

We think it’s oil coming from the reduction gearbox if it’s at the rear, and you need to report it to your dealer they think but are not 100% sure a replacement modified breather will sort it out in appears to have done so for some, but not all have been successful you need to see your dealer and take a picture with you to show them, plus some have had there dealer get someone to remove the oil from there driveways at MG/dealer cost so ask about that as well.
How long have you had the car which model is it and what’s your mileage ?

Sadly, that's the common issue. Put some cardboard under the car for a day to make sure.

I’ve had it 6 weeks and it’s done 700 miles. It might have been leaking for a while and I just haven’t noticed as I am a bit sleep deprived thanks to a toddler

backldav, thanks for the reply and yes it’s sounds very much like others have had and ELbr, as said above about putting some cardboard under the car well not a bad idea at all 1 it will help to stop it staining your drive way and 2 it will show you just where the leak is so you can tell your dealer just where the leak is but the priority is inform the dealer so they can hopefully get it sorted.

Well understand the sleep issue thank the lord mine few the nest many years ago now but toddler you say think you may have a long way to go yet good luck.

Also asked them to check the breather and they said it is now covered by a TSB so is done as a matter of course.
Does the TSB say to replace breather even if leak not yet identified? Sounds like a sensible course of action if that is the case because it is likely that cars that haven't yet leaked will do (assuming they have sufficient oil) when driven far and fast enough.

My dealer was adamant last week that the advice from MG was to release cars with lower oil levels and only replace breather when customer complained about a leak, but that may (hopefully) have changed.

If true it only took them 3 and a half months

Hi Les
Been a while since I dropped back in.
I'm stunned that this is still ongoing.
Jeez it should have been resolved months ago.
Hopefully it'll get sorted very soon.
Sad to hear that the breather still hasn't worked for some.
Not good....

I am due to collect my car on Tuesday and following a request by me, the dealer says that he believes that the breather mod has been embodied.
And of course I have no way of checking.
So. Can I ask those who have had the change embodied how I can physically check it.
Hopefully you can advise me. Thank you.
