MG4 SE SR
This is probably a difficult question to answer, though interested to hear various opinions.

Seems there are quite a few of us awaiting delivery of our shiny new MG4s. Spending time reading the forums and the numerous issues is enough to give anybody serious doubts, especially with reports of folk handing their cars back or trying to get out of deals.

So, is there cause to be seriously concerned, or are the forums a disproportionate representation of people who have issues posting for advice, with a very large majority of MG4 owners pretty satisfied with their purchase (and not using these forums!)?

Would appreciate happy ownership comments for reassurance 😅 (My blue SE SR just arrived in Portbury, awaiting delivery)

My thoughts are well published here.
I don’t think there’s a single faultless 4 out there, it’s a shambles of a car riddled with common faults.
The question is will you notice any of them, or care about them if you do.
Example, the badly fitting undertray is easy to ignore for plenty of owners, drives other nuts.
The awful lane keep assist, maybe you won’t mind stabbing at the often recalcitrant screen to switch it off every journey.
Maybe you won’t go fast enough to notice the steering vibration/rumbling.
Etc etc blablabla

Like you I'm still waiting for mine, and like you I've had the odd doubt of have I made the right decision.
There are a few owners who have had a problem or two with their MG4 and have taken the decision to return them but they are also very vocal about the faults and post about them multiple times which can give a distorted view.
Most of the problems that have occurred are software related and a lot of them have, or are, being updated. The oil leak seems to still be work in progress but there seems to be fewer occurrences among the later batches of cars. The undertray bulge is only slight on the later cars and LKA has been tamed with the latest updates.

Ok - I hear you - I have read the posts - BUT ...

My 4 Trophy was a second batch vehicle (delivered In v.late December) - I've done some 3.5k in it now - it has s/w 28 or 29 - and is due to have that updated next week along with getting the 'possible' oil leak investigated - I'm still not 100% convinced I actually have the issue based on others images that they have kindly posted - BUT I'm aware its a known issue and I have the deepest respect for the owners that are battling with getting it resolved. (Haven taken two other car manufactures to the brink of court re car failures previously)

Re the car - Yes the manufactures decision to have some features 'Set hard coded as ON' by default is something I disagree with (Lane Assist for instance) - & the method of having to change these settings whilst you are 'in drive mode' is off putting - But I can now do these changes almost without looking - However I expect some s/w revisions to adjust these, will be in the forth coming months / years. - So I can live with basically..

Our 4 has exceed our expectations - Perhaps I had a much lower expectation than others - Or perhaps I'm realistic - I've come from being a previous EV driver of some 4 years - So I'm not a newbie - As to going fast for steering vibrations - I drive at the legal limit 'often' and DONT have this issue - My undertray also 'fits correctly'

Maybe I for once DID NOT get a Friday Car - :)

Another point to consider is that the 4s USP of low price has been negated, other more established marques are fighting back and reducing their prices.
Owners consoling themselves with ‘well it was cheap’ can’t really use that anymore.

I agree with the positive comments. Had my Trophy since Nov. Had the oil leak which was fixed. Had software issues with the drowsiness alert which have also been fixed. The drive is brilliant, the range is good, it charges quickly. It's just a brilliant car.

Hi Rich, as with a lot of places where people 'feedback' on the internet, the mainstay only do so if they have a complaint, so it can taint things.
I have mine on order, my dealer has kept in contact with me each month since I ordered. The MG4 is a new car to market and some niggles are to be expected, as with nearly all new cars / products.
All in all, when I collect mine in June, I am hoping the vast majority of things people have complained about will be resolved. The car has some great reviews, looks and drives great for reasonable money. So I am taking things into perspective and have a positive outlook. Hope you will too,

Mine is still on order and have had reservations but no other similar car is near it on price and would at least be an extra £100 per month so I’ll ride it out and hope for the best

100% this in my case also. First batch in October and now 100% Sorted. Even my LKA stays off!!
Its the first car we have had that even the wife loves driving. Great range, very comfortable and drives a dream. Mine had vibration/rumble and once tyres were changed its as smooth as a babys bum at all speeds!! Mines a Trophy also.

Love my car. Have had good service from the dealer. Undertray had a slight bulge that I can't summon the energy to worry about. I adjusted settings of LKA and it doesn't bother me.
Even with price rise and others dropping I don't think there's a better value EV on the market.

If you want perfection, it's not the car for you. Yes, there's (what I think) is a small chance you'll need to fight to get some issues sorted. But chances are you'll be delighted. And of course, you could switch plans and get a lemon elsewhere.

You can always reject the car within thirty days if you're not happy (though that's likely to be a pain in the Rs for most people I guess).

@richlove hey I haven’t picked up mine yet but completely agree with what your saying a lot of the stuff on here is negative potentially there should be a subject category opened up with positive reviews of the mg4 on here so people can settle there nerves with that thread after reading about all the oil leaks etc :)

Heh, I love our MG4. We've had it since mid-January, and took the view that we are very much "early adopters" (as they say in the IT world – and let's face it, an MG4 is a combination of smartphone and bumper car). So far, we've not had major issues. Yes, the software is a work in progress, but switching off the LKA and traffic-sign identification has become a standard ritual before we push that accelerator pedal and glide off. The range is impressive, even in very cold weather. The underbody is flat, the mid-range acceleration is outstanding, and I've not noticed any oil leaks. Yes, the suspension is pretty unforgiving, especially in view of our location in rural France (surrounded by unpaved roads); but on the positive side, I loaded up the car with a large stack of 25kg organic earth bags the other day and it didn't sag at all – I was able to drive over those unpaved roads without scraping the underside once (unlike my neighbours in their – ostensibly higher-riding – Skoda Fabia). So there you go. Here's a pic of our nice car (in its cheap white paint – can't cope with the idea of paying through the nose for coloured paintwork, and white is nice and visible anyway):

My Trophy is faultless so far, very happy with it.

Bear in mind those who have had problems tend to be very vocal and think that their experience is the common experience. Those who are just enjoying their cars quietly are not nearly as visible.

There's also the psychological factor that when someone has moved on from an MG4 to something else, validation of their decision tends to invite seeing the worst in the car they left behind and the best in their new one.

Another point to consider is that the 4s USP of low price has been negated, other more established marques are fighting back and reducing their prices.

There's still no comparison, not for a new car. Yes, the gap is a bit narrower, but it still means paying significantly more to go elsewhere.

As a counterpoint ;) ...

LKA is easy to turn off before you drive away.
My undertray is near-enough flat
I've had no real issues with my car, other than the oil leak.
LKA is fixed if you have the right updates. Mine does.

Pretty sure there's been a "positive" thread going for months. Might be a few pages back though.🤔😉

I too was worried I had made the wrong choice after I'd ordered and waited 3 months reading about all the various issues. I have now had the car just over a month and done 1500 miles. So far there is no sign of the oil leak, the LKA seems no better but no worse than what I've had before (have always turned it off on previous cars and it's no chore to turn it off on the 4).My undertray is not perfect but not awful either so no issue there. The only real fault I have is the Bluetooth losses it's pairing , not all the time but enough to be annoying, hopefully an update will eventually fix it. The car is comfortable, smooth, quick, and very easy to drive , overall very pleased and happy.

I do, and mine is (it defaults to Low). However it also defaults to Audible Alert on. So it's not physically intrusive, but it is audibly so. :)

So I tend to just turn LKA off if I'm going anywhere that involves A roads or motorways. :)
