Model update: User feedback makes MG4 Electric even better (MG Press 24-05-2023)

(Google translated from offical MG press release on 24.05.2023 in German, source: Modell-Update: Nutzer-Feedback macht MG4 Electric noch besser - MG Motor Europe)
  • MG Motor is further upgrading the MG4 Electric - model year 2023 from now on at the MG Motor agencies
  • All models with even more extensive standard equipment, seat heating from the standard [1], heat pump now for the Comfort [2] and Luxury [3] variants as standard
  • One-Pedal-Driving, route-assisted battery preheating - further improvements of the MG4 Electric
Munich, Germany, May 24, 2023 – MG Motor has further upgraded the MG4 Electric for its customers. The 2023 model year of the hatchback brings new and additional equipment as well as further comfort and safety features. Only a few months after the successful market launch of the MG4 Electric, MG Motor is thus implementing initial feedback from customers and the trade press and further optimizing the currently most popular MG motor model.

Optimized battery preheating

A new feature has been added to the preheating function available in all models in the Luxury variant. The battery can not only be actively preheated via setting via the 10.25-inch touchscreen, which improves the charging time, as with the standard and comfort equipment, but the process can also be carried out after the update using the navigation and depending on the route to a charging station can be automated.

One-Pedal-Driving and Co.: additional standard equipment for all models

The equipment level of the MG4 Electric receives a further boost. Heated front seats, a heated steering wheel made of microfiber leather and 17-inch aluminum wheels with two-tone wheel trims are now part of the standard equipment for both the MG4 Electric Standard and the MG4 Electric Comfort.

The MG4 Electric Luxury is now standard on striking 18-inch aluminum rims with two-tone wheel trim. The heat pump previously reserved for the Luxury model is now also part of the standard equipment for the Comfort model. It heats the interior particularly efficiently, which means that a longer range can be available in cold temperatures.

All three model variants include a rear window wiper and now three rear headrests, which further increase the level of safety for passengers, as standard. In addition, all MG4 Electric variants can now be driven in comfortable one-pedal driving. Only by releasing the accelerator pedal is the moderate braking effect, even to a standstill, and thus the energy recovery triggered.

Prices remain low

With the attractive facelift measures, MG Motor is further increasing the technical level of the MG4 Electric and incorporating customer wishes in terms of equipment. For those interested, the compact, fully electrified hatchback remains an extremely attractive entry-level model for electromobility.

After deducting the manufacturer's environmental bonus*, the MG4 Electric Standard is available in Germany from €32,312.50*. The MG4 Electric Comfort starts in Germany after the manufacturer environmental bonus* from €37,312.50, the MG4 Electric Luxury from €39,312.50. Thanks to the customer environmental bonus*, all models are eligible and the price can be up to €4,500 lower if a corresponding customer application is approved.

I ordered my trophy/luxury in early May with expected delivery by end of June. I wonder if I'll get any of the hardware upgrades. Having the bigger wheels and rear window wipers will be a great advantage. I hope at least we'll get the one-pedal driving for all.

What I find interesting is that they seem to listen to customer feedback. Anyone knows how and where? Maybe this forum is making a difference in MG decisions :)

Well, the idea of MG listening to their customers is something of a novel concept for me, but to be fair that's mainly by reading other members' experiences - I haven't had anything bad enough happen to make me go running back to the dealer. I do have a "little list" of things MG might want to hear about though...

The issue here is that they're talking about adding additional features on new cars yet to be built (or at least delivered). That's nice, for the people who haven't bought theirs yet, but what about those of us who have, who would simply like the features we have, or thought we had, to work without software bugs making annoying modifications we hadn't bargained for. And what about the purchasers of these new cars? Will they still have headlights that come on if the sun goes behind a cloud, no exterior temperature display, USB music systems that can't handle folders, radios that default to on, automatic locking that can't be disabled, and cars that won't pre-heat if they've been on the charger the previous night?

If these problems are present on the new-spec cars, they'll still have disgruntled customers. And if they aren't, can we have that software too please?

This could well be lost in translation, however “all” seems like this could well be a retrofit upgrade. I’m not a car guru by any means, however I can’t see how this feature isn’t possible via updates to apply to the existing MG4, fingers crossed.

It would probably be a slight modification to ACC that basically gives you one peddle driving at the moment. 🤷‍♂️

If MG were serious about feedback they’d have communication with this forum.
The Cupra Born Facebook page, which I would guess has fewer members than here, has members who are in direct contact with Cupra and have regular ‘meetings’ with them.
Never knew you had a Cupra Bowser

If we can get some decent infotainment upgrades underway the car will be even more liveable day to day.

Shortcuts (customisable) on the main infotainment screen are definitely high on my list of software changes. E.g
• LKA-OFF/ON
• Shut Down

It's an android tablet, can't be very difficult for them to do.

I saw an update note the other day for the Mulan model that listed "LKA shortcut" as one of the changes, so we can live in hope. Wish I'd noted the link now!

That would be something good for us all - even if you never really turn it off like myself, the one time you're caught out and do need to turn it off, it's a nightmare to fiddle through the infotainment screens whilst wrestling with the steering wheel trying to drag you into an oncoming pothole/tractor/kamikaze-sheep.

Shortcuts make life easier for those things we turn off even just sometimes, most MG4 drivers have a full preflight schedule to go through just to set off.

I think someone has suggested this before, but I'd repurpose the physical volume +/- buttons and the left joystick press ... one to turn LKA On/Off, another to cycle through drive modes and the last to cycle through regen modes.

(I know the left star button can be programmed on the Trophy to do the regen or drive modes, but this isn't available for the SE, and even Trophy owners would prefer the additional flexibility).

Exactly! I came accross from VW, and we still have our free independent workshop / ODIS / Geko subscription, which allows access to the dealership workshop tools, including modern stuff such as ADAS calibration & component protection rematching to digital service stamping. We pay for time of use @ 10 euro / hour.

Don't we have 'Miles Roberts' from MG on this forum and regular podcast with him and members of this forum ?
This should provide a mechanism of feedback into MG
sporadically maybe, but Miles is from a dealership in sales, not technical?, we really need an experienced technical director on here.

Not sure we would get that level onto a forum & podcast. However @Miles Roberts CG should be able to feed into MG and provide a conduit for feedback into MG service & technical improvement meetings.... If Mg have such meetings that is ? 🤞

Miles doesn't represent MG UK, he is part of an MG dealership. He volunteers his time here, has some inside information and can via his connections ask for some things but it would way better if MGUK had an official presence here.

I do sort of understand why they don't - it would be more than a full time job and they'd be swamped by people with problems trying to resolve them via MG UK rather than their dealer. They have very few staff and probably think their time is better spent evolving the vehicles for the UK market.

I'd settle for MG UK quietly reading these forums and then putting out some communications about what they are going address.
