Hobart MG - MG Dealer Discussion, Opinions & Experiences

We purchased our MGEV from Hobart MG, also known as Performance Automobiles (they also have Subaru,Volvo, Porsche etc etc franchises in Hobart). We ordered in early December and the slow boat from China did eventually come in last week, a couple of weeks ahead of original delivery date, so that was great. We originally ordered the Clipper Blue which cost $500 extra in December, but I noticed there was an offer which started on Boxing Day for free metallic paint (including the blue), which I did point that out to the sales guy when we picked up and paid for the car. He said he was pretty sure it was only for the petrol MG ZS so I showed him the current website and he happily credited the $500 back to us. I’d like to think his ignorance was genuine (yes, I’m an optimist), but if so, it worries me that MG Australia aren’t keeping their dealerships totally up to date with the latest info regarding releases, offers, etc. Admittedly there were absolutely no other freebies thrown in - not even mats - so I’m very pleased I looked at their website the night before. My advice - do your homework at all stages of your purchase and as my dear dad used to say, “the squeaky wheel gets oiled” - ie don’t be afraid to ask or push for something If you think something is not quite ‘right’. I can’t really complain about the service - everyone was very nice and helpful but I think the EV thing is new for them, so there was not really an abundance of information available. That’s why I’m grateful for this forum!
Very happy with the car so far - it looks gorgeous, handles well on our rubbish roads, and we are having fun with the KERS3 on our mountain drive to and from home.
I am a bit mystified why MG don’t seem to be ‘upselling’ EV customers with other charger cables at point of sale. We only received the free home slow charger with the MG so have had to purchase another Type 2 22kw lead on the net which arrives next week. This means that until it arrives we can’t really travel much as many of the rather few charging stations in Tasmania don’t have the lead and plug provided, which we found out on our first outing! I suppose the dealers will realise this is another accessory that will be worth stocking when the number of EVs sold increases. At the moment, I think we are one of about 250 registered EVs in Tasmania. Our 2 visits with the MG to the local supermarket have both flushed out interested potential buyers, so I’d like to think that MG dealerships should be treating us as free sales staff. Unfortunately, no free mats, tinting, boot liner, teddy or Prosecco for us! We did get the oversized red 🎀 though!

Hi, TassieDEVil if you end up getting genuine carpet floor mats, ensure they have ZS EV on them as the EV floor plan is different from the petrol version and those mats will not fit the EV version properly. The correct carpet floor mats have ZS in sort of a greyish-silver/ lower black colour and EV in silver on a sky-blue background. Window tinting for all windows and a strip across the front of the top of the windscreen is definitely needed in Australia for our hot and bright sunny days and summers.

The trick when buying a new car is to buy it on the last 3 to 5 days of the month, dealers have sales targets to meet and likely to give you a better deal, however the MG ZS EV was a new model and dealers tend not to discount if its a new model and ready buyers outstrip supply.

Interesting re the mats - I didn’t know that. We ended up spending $40 at Autobahn on some nice deep rubber ones (lots of stones and mud in our lives) that fitted fantastically- surprisingl! The carpet ones these days just wear too quickly I find.
