I think you'll find the "elongated piece" below the rear reg plate is not a sensor, but a piece of black plastic that covers up two screw holes. The Chinese plate has different fixing holes to the UK, so the dealers get supplied with the black cover up strip. I have a 21 plate SR Excite...

Exactly the same situation as yourself, 2 year old Excite, over 11 years NCD, has over doubled at renewal to £465 from £218 last year. Silly increase, so cheapest I could find on many comparison sites was Hastings Direct at £308 approx 20 days before renewal date.
