Solar Power - Why people ignore your advice

There's certainly a lot of options out there right now. Personally I'd be wary of getting tied into a proprietary system, such as Tesla's - but horses for courses, as they say. Having a reputable installer who knows what they're doing and is going to be around for a long time is definitely...

    Granny charging variability

We seem to be going around in circles 🤷‍♀️ You asked "what is the logic" - I have given you the answer with the technical & IET / BS7671 regulatory reasons behind it. With all due respect I don't give a **** if you set your house on fire or electrocute your loved ones with your V2L 13A suicide...

    Granny charging variability

Basically for compliance with IET Wiring Regulations (722.55.101.0.201.1i), mandates a BS1362-2 EV compliant socket to supply max continuous of 10A for EV charging. FYI; 'so-called' 13A sockets are only suitable for 13A for a short duration - e.g. 3 mins. kettle boiling. Max should be 10A...

Anyone using car battery to power house ?

I'd say vehicle manufacturer - that is, in effect, the power generator and the part that determines how the power is delivered and any limited protection it provides. The V2L lead is usually little more than a plug and socket, some wire and a resistor.

    Granny charging variability

Might be plucking at straws here, but could it be that when you were in the vehicle the HVAC was turning on and off, and hence using much of the power?

Solar Power - Why people ignore your advice

Totally agree and not everyone can/wants to DIY like ourselves and @Barrie. My point though was the seemingly high price of @Ian Key's quote. Even allowing for £2K for scaffolding (which I suspect is not the price solar install companies will pay due to their bulk deals with scaffolding...

Solar Power - Why people ignore your advice

OMG! That's a lot. So, 460W panels are about £55 trade each at the moment, mounting rails will come to around 50%-75% of price of panels. A 5kWh battery is sub £1000. You don't mention what size of inverter, but a 6kWh hybrid inverter will be around £1000. So, a large premium for...

Anyone using car battery to power house ?

That's a step in the right direction and I can see how that could help in some failure situations. But, a bit like having an airbag in cars, it won't protect from every possible failure without connecting the Earth from the vehicle to ground via an earthing rod - which then comes back to my...

Anyone using car battery to power house ?

I'll chip in again here with some feedback to the recent questions / observations... I agree that more should be done by the suppliers of V2L-capable vehicles to advise users on the dangers and what should or not be allowed to be connected directly - i.e. without having a sparky implement a...

Anyone using car battery to power house ?

    (y) Correct. That would be my preferred way of powering a house from V2L if one already has solar + a low-voltage battery system installed. Search on postings from @wattmatters and @Bricktop X PWR about that for more details as they have successfully done that.

Anyone using car battery to power house ?

Hmm. Then it would appear you have no knowledge of electrical safety protection systems. Being in France you are fortunate that you are likely to have a TT earthing arrangement which makes earthing of self-generated power easier than in the UK where many houses have a TN-C-S system. But...

Anyone using car battery to power house ?

I give up - I have already done that in multiple postings in this thread 🤷‍♀️ Which is exactly why you should not be messing with suicide cords to power your house, bypassing all earthing and RCD protection.

    MG Software Lawsuit

No, it's more complicated than that. Permitted usage will depend on the specific licence under which the source code is provided. Some licences agreements, such as GPL, require the user to make all of their derived works open source. Other agreements are more lenient, on the user that is...

To answer that... does your property have a TT or TN-C-S earthing arrangement?

Anyone using car battery to power house ?

That is not safe. A boiler is not a doubly insulated device. You have no earth and no RCD protection. I assume you did not read my previous postings #82 above and posting #74 where I linked to a previous posting specifically about boilers? Link again here...

Anyone using car battery to power house ?

🙅‍♀️🙅‍♀️🙅‍♀️ NO! I find it hard to believe that someone from UK Power Network would have said that. If they did, they need to be reported and fired. (y) And the same in the UK. This approach is not safe at all, and in violation of BS7671 and Part-P building regs for multiple reasons...

Anyone using car battery to power house ?

Hmm.. the suicide cable! The biggest issue you will have is earthing and RCD protection, unless you are lucky and have a TT earthing arrangement at your property. See my postings here about V2L powering the house... https://www.mgevs.com/threads/mg4-discharge-cable.19797/post-341822 and this...

On a related note... there has been some discussion over the years about whether front brake lights could improve road safety. e.g. like mentioned here https://cosmosmagazine.com/technology/front-brake-lights-prevent-crashes/
