We (and others on here) use 7kW (32A) portable "granny" chargers that plug into a 32A commando socket....

I don't see any way that would be economic to repair - probably a write off with hire car costs alone for the time it would take to fix. Glad you're all OK.
But re...
... now you've written the teaser, I'm intrigued to know what it is
If I'm seeing the image correctly, that's a french (type e) 16A schuko socket. You will therefore need to buy a granny charger with schuko socket on the supply end. The other end will plug into your EV.
The alternative (without the cost of fixed home charger) would be to have a 16A or 32A...
Intermittent faults are the worst to diagnose :( If it is earthing related, it could be down to local conditions if you are on a TT earthing arrangement. Or the fault could be related to over or under voltage conditions (as discussed in the thread linked below); the latter is less likely...
I'm with BB..
... and a lot of profit margin from everything I've read over the last 30 years. The car stealerships will push these add-on products hard as that is where they make most money. Scare tactics to make you sign up = avoid (IMHO). When we bought our VW we were offered finance...
Depending on cable size and length, then combined with AC to DC conversion losses, 10 to 15% would not be abnormal, so 500W loss on 3800 = 14% which is the right ballpark, IMHO.
(y)... I had a sudden deja-vue moment, after posting my post about V2L... and then remembered this thread

"you could put it in yourself" sure, but only in the same manner that you could drive a car without a seatbelt, tax or insurance.
This is not compliant with BS7671 (section 551.7.2), nor BS1363 for that matter.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for increased deployment of EVSE's, but less than 10% of the UK housing stock is under 10 years old and retro-fitting will be a slow and costly process.
But, IMHO, unfortunately there will be a large percentage of the population who live in rented, HMO's, no-off-street-access or live in apartments, residental homes etc. that will never be able to have a home charger.
Can you explain a bit more about what / what isn't happening + what size system (PV and battery), make etc.
There should be a CT clamp around your incoming live feed that should tell the inverter to draw from the battery if solar production isn't meeting house usage; up to the power limit that...
this ^^^^
Plus, surely, it is very likely the dealership did a history check on the vehicle and would have seen that it was MOT'd after year 1 (rather than 3) and 6 monthly thereafter 🤷♀️
As @Bam Bam noted, it's because @Gomev's usage is so low.
I suggest that @Gomev takes you up on that offer, thus increasing his annual electricity usage to around 5MWh. Then, the "man-maths" for installing solar will work out at a much shorter payback period. ;)
Possible, but for us too, too...
No difference - the plug-in micro-inverters will be on the load supply of the protection devices (RCD + MCB) when plugged into a regular UK ring final circuit. Maybe the micro-inverters designed for plug-in usage will have an in-built RCD themselves, but then you'd have two RCD protecting a...
I guess that is a good thing. But then I wouldn't like only being able to buy wine in government run stores that are open limited hours. Win some, lose some ;) 🍷
Agree.
Maybe... but rented property requires an EICR every 5 years. So, I suspect that a (compliant) rental property is more likely to be safe than an older home-owner's house.
(y) I agree. 800W being injected on the load side of the household protection devices is bad enough, IMHO. Increasing that to around 2500W (with total of 6 panels) in an accident waiting to happen :(
I still question the wisdom of plug-in-solar. A household RCD will typically disconnect...
Interesting, was that from them reading your posts on this forum? If so, I want my commission :)
I've had no dealings with them at all, hopefully someone else on here has direct experience of using them for diagnostic, rather than just service needs.
I just got the impression that they are...
How much leeway do you have on the date you need the service done by? I'm thinking that you could just get the MOT done anytime now, at any MOT testing station, and then get the service done separately?
Your eclipse hacksaw handle just Triggered something in my mind... I've just checked our outbuilding and found my grandmother's 70 year-old broom. It has only had 17 new heads and 14 new handles ;)
... will Skoda be last, though? What about the Audi version, then the e-Porschette and the Lamborghini-shittycity-car. And for us oldies in 5-years time, the luxurious Bentley-mobility-scooter?
I got the impression he meant that was all that was paid and then keeps the car for no additional payment 🤷♀️ Paying £20,000 just to rent something for 4 years sounds like very poor value to me 👵
A typical household (30mA) RCD will trip when there is an imbalance of just under 20mA current flow between Live and Neutral. You don't need a "short" to generate that amount of leakage. Any impedance less than around 12kOhm between either L&E or between N&E would trip an RCD (e.g. due to...
... and love the "Made in England" feature of those old B&D drills. My DH has one from mid 1980's that is still used for more demanding jobs that the cordless newer one can't handle.
If the going rate is £450 per 11 weeks then, just think, by 2028 you'll be another £3500 in pocket and will have been driving their free vehicles for 2 years ;)
Well, that's just stoopid - OK then, if I can't object to the "i", I'll object to the GT bit. In my old analogue mind a VW Polo is not a Grand Tourer [@everest says, stamping her foot].
My understanding is that you should have rejected the vehicle immediately after the first failed attempt, but before 6 months from date of purchase had elapsed. As you have given them a 2nd attempt to repair, I suspect that your legal rights will have been diminished - but maybe others have...
Hmmm... despite being a VW fan, what were they smoking when they invented that name?
The "i" in GTi stands for "injection". What is being injected and how? Have VW added a Cathode Ray Tube to the force electrons into the motor at high velocity
no
no
The standard EV type 2 cable has a resistor between two pins (PP and PE IIRC) that defines the max current capacity of the cable. Putting two cables in series will put the resistors in parallel and present a different impedance to the EVSE.
But, you can purchase a dedicated type 2...
AI says "AI Overview: The 2026 MG4 Urban is a small 5-door electric hatchback designed primarily for city driving, featuring a "dorky" yet highly practical, rounded design that offers significant interior space".
I wouldn't say she looks that "dorky" in the pic ;)

True fact: Dolly Parton once entered a Dolly Parton look-a-like contest and didn't win! Same thing happened to Charlie Chaplin & Elvis Presley. I can understand the last two. Neither of them look like Dolly Parton.

use BBC iPlayer

Well, I didn't write "MD" for maximum demand ;)
OK... so I got Google to ELI5 (explain-like-I'm-5) what I said, and Mr Google says...
This is a detailed description of a safe, modern, and high-quality installation for a home electric vehicle (EV) charger.
Here is the breakdown in simple...
Depends what you have already? Dedicated metal-clad CU for the charger connected via Henley blocks on min 16mm² tails, 63A Type B RCD, SPD and 40A MCB would be my choice, with 6mm² or 10mm² SWA from CU to charger, depending on distance. You will need prior DNO approval if your DNO supply fuse...
Sshh... you're going to make my DH even more miserable..

(y) it was a 4 speed box with, IIRC, a short movement gear lever. How do I know that? Well, much to my DH's (was BF back...
The pedant in me suggests that at that trajectory, I'd say it's doing something over an island. But IMHO it is more likely to be decelerating, rather than accelerating due to lack of traction and the air resistance of the not-very-aerodynamic shape. 🤷♀️ 🤓
OMG - if you didn't flush the oil and it replace with fresh Castrol 20w50 within the specified 10 hours usage, your MG will suffer from worn piston rings and low compression and your warranty will be voided ;)
[only kidding]
(y) if you're on a 60A fuse and your new maximum demand (MD) is deemed / measured to be less than 60A then the installer will be able to proceed with the installation and notify your DNO within 28 days (i.e. instead of getting prior approval).
This may be of interest...

Depends on too many factors to answer that conclusively - a big one being how suitable your location is for enough panels, DNO limits on export and own usage patterns. For us with low mileage EV usage and WFH, where we can be fully self-sufficient for 8 months of the year it was the best...
This is too confusing for me.. 👵🤓
I didn't buy an MG, so I can't vote..
I did purchase a car, so maybe I can vote after all

Price and thinking we needed V2L were the reasons I shortlisted the MG4. Reading some of the horror stories on this forum made me change my mind :) For some strange reason I'm still here and haven't been banned from having never owned an MG in my life. The closest I came to an MG was rear...
