Unless you are lifting something heavy out of the boot that requires both hands I guess.

I tried using the kick to open and close today, I have had the car 3 months, I am sure when I first got it I tried it and it closed by the foot waggle as well. Today it opens, but just beeps twice when trying to close with foot.

I have been a software developer since the mid 80's, I agree they should plan for the unforeseen and deal with it in a robust way.
