Did you lock your car? That locks the charging cable in place too. On my ZS EV the blue lights only come on when the car is locked.

There is a USB port on the mirror mount of the ZS EV (mine's a Trophy, vintage December 2001). I was able to stick a NextBase Dash Cam behind the mirror and attach it to the USB port via a short cable (not the supplied one which is too short but one about a foot long). The Dash Cam only works...

My issue is now resolved: I bought a new phone. Its predecessor was running Android 8 which Google Play says is the minimum. The new phone is running Android 14. I suspect that the latest update needs a more recent version of Android than number 8.

I have an LG M200n running Android 8.1.0. My car is the ZS EV LR Trophy. Having seen the comments here, I was hanging back from updating to version 2.0.2 (from 2.0.1) but it auto-updated and now it doesn't work. Specifically, I now get a totally black screen except for a white bar at the top...

This sounds very like the problem I had. There's a locking pin which if it sticks means you cannot secure the cable in place. You may be able to see it and poke it back. If that doesn't work call MG Assist: it's a known fault and they actually have a video on their tablets showing how to fix it.

Don't overlook that there is often a time limit on car parks, so adding the waiting time to the charging time might take you over the limit. This is particularly true of Lidl, where you only get 90 minutes.
