I've been doing some more experimentation, and I've found a better way to work things which is also very easy to operate. Today I seem to have it working perfectly. Here's the picture that tells the story.
Start charging the battery at midnight (having exported whatever was left, to end at...
I have a friend (well, friend's husband) who has a Mercedes estate car which is about 35 years old and has done about 230,000 miles. It's a bit of a phenomenon. At Christmas I heard him mutter something about having to sell it soon so he could buy another petrol car. (This was after being...
I'm losing track of people here. Are you guys off-grid, without an export tariff?
This is me today, total generation 45.6 kwh and still doing over 300 watts at nearly 8 o'clock.
I exported 37.56 kwh, used 2.26 kwh to power the house, and scooped 3 kwh into the battery now I've figured out...
I'm absolutely gobsmacked that he got enough to keep the car running from solar alone, in wintertime. Sure, in summer, but winter? Also, it means having the car attached to the charger throughout the middle of the day, which doesn't seem ideal.
I've been discharging the battery to 30% around dawn so that it has room to collect the solar generation that would otherwise be clipped by my 5 kw export limit. I've finally worked out how to do it with minimal hassle, and on a day that's reasonably sunny I can collect 30-40% into the battery...
That's amazing. I'm making money here, but I only have one car, and the heating is dirty old kerosene. No way will I ever make enough to cover the oil bills!

Welcome to the forum Chris, and very sorry for your rough reception. Please don't hold it against us!
It worked properly today. It's worth posting the graph. I've taken out the grid import because it was messing with the scale, but that doesn't matter so much.
At midnight the home battery is charging from the grid. The dishwasher is also on and is running at the same time, also drawing from...
There's more cloud again today and even the morning had high light cloud, but the battery has already put on 26% (from 39% to 65%) and it's charging at over 2 kW whenever the sun comes out.
