Well no sooner had I posted this I stumbled across older posts. I believe it's to do with the driver fatigue sensor and was quickly removed so only early models have it. I think driver fatigue is still detected but in some other way.

I find the MG4's sound quite subtle and don't mind it at all. There is a Renault Zoe near us and that has a very distinctive hum I always recognise.

I would say most certainly yes. As a software engineer myself these sorts of UI 'pauses' are put in place to show the computer is doing 'something' in the background, that it hasn't forgotten about you and it will be complete soon. A couple of examples - most video games have loading screens...
