    Production ready solid state battery

I will believe this when I see it independently tested and verified. There have been countless announcements of battery breakthroughs. 99 out of 100 seem to be untrue.

Little on the outside, large on range

True, but the general consensus is that their cars look ugly. Now that must hurt sales for a significant percentage of the market. Designers often get carried away (eg Bangle-era BMWs or the more recent huge-goatee BMWs) and reduce a brand's potential sales. People who don't care about car...

Little on the outside, large on range

Don't panic! There will still be choices. It will look like the ICE car market where FWD dominates but there are still RWD cars to own and enjoy (and 4WD).

    Winter Tales

Bloomin' Luxury, those tales are! I am old enough to remember the great Torbay snow of 2018, with massive drifts of one to one and half inches. I was working in Cardiff and managed to get to within a mile of home on the bypass before I had to abandon my car. It wasn't until the following day...

Little on the outside, large on range

We are in a trend shift at the moment: higher cost, higher performance but smaller storage space RWD EVs to cheap, mass market, large storage FWD, dynamically-average cars. The RWD options won't disappear but FWD will dominate in the future because the mass market wants space and price above...

MG will have a car coming too, maybe called MG2.

Little on the outside, large on range

It comes with a 61kWh battery option which is quite large for the size of car, similar to MG4 LR.
  8. tsedge

Is range anxiety finally defeated in England?

Far from range anxiety, I now want the option in my next EV to set a minimum charge time on Rapid DC charging, so it doesn't charge too quickly for my stops.
  9. tsedge

Little on the outside, large on range

More smaller EVs are coming. I think 2026 will be the year of the battle of £20,000 (list price) family EVs and also the year of secondhand EV buying dramatically accelerating. 2027 likely to be the year of the small EV, with many makers planning Polo-sized vehicles. Not sure how many small...

    Parasitic drain on 12V battery

My MG4 maintains the 12v battery just fine, regularly topping it up when parked and locked or while driving. We have left the car for weeks at a time and had zero problems. After 3 years it is still on its original 12V battery - the MGS5 should inherit this implemented system. As this seems...

    SOH report MG4

This is just a print off from their electronic disgnosis software with a SOH written on top. Really the iSmart app should provide a full car history and all service and...

    Parasitic drain on 12V battery

The battery should not drain. It gets topped up by the HV battery. This points to either a software problem or a faulty piece of hardware that is draining it. If your dealer can't diagnose it: go to a better dealer. This is horrible dealer BS to make you go away. It doesn't matter whether...

UK version is stripped of magnets

Neodymium = very strong magnet. Ferromagnetic = metal that sticks well to magnets (eg iron, steel). Neodymiums will stick well to Ferromagnetic plates, so maybe that was the idea all along? (ie the magnets were always supposed to be inside the accessories, not the seats). Not sure how people...

While it may get cheaper, I don't think it is likely to drop to £25k except as a second-hand buy. I think you'll see maybe another £2k off these in the next year. More relevant to some, perhaps, will be the leasing pricing, which is likely to come down considerably after the car has been on...

Is my idea crazy or should I pursue it further?

That's true, although pulling fuses in the car will probably reduce that load a fair bit. I think these losses will be outweighed by the huge capacity and potential to store lots of energy in the car pack. My understanding is it can be grid tied using technology such as that mentioned above...

  56. tsedge

Is my idea crazy or should I pursue it further?

Yep, makes sense. I am not currently thinking of a heat pump because of their huge electricity requirements. I should be able to get 6.4kW in the car (allowing for losses) x the number of low rate hours. With 6 hours that would be 38.8kWh each night. Exactly and the car could be a huge...
  57. tsedge

Is my idea crazy or should I pursue it further?

Yes but the whole point of the thread is to avoid buying from new. An MOT-failure EV can be had for scrap money. That means lots of HV electrical work: not something the average DIYer should be taking on. Fine for electricians or electrical engineers, but I know my limitations. I could take...

EV opposition in the media is ramping up

Yes and not only that, in the UK the fuel pumps are typically located separately from the toilets and refreshments on the exit. So he would have had to have parked, run to the toilet, come back and then driven to the pump to fill up, so the real point is EVs fill up without you while you do...

MGS5 didn’t accelerate in uphill slope

My MG4 does this. I live on a very steep hill and occasionally when manoeuvring on it, I will get this situation when I press the accelerator and the car just sits there. I think it gets confused by the steepness and the power required to move off. The remedy is simple. I now just always...

EV opposition in the media is ramping up

Something very unhelpful from Matt Watson: Note: It isn't five minutes but just under 3 minutes according to the charger display. I have never ever heard any EV owner claim a 5 minute charge is useful or comparable to a pump stop. It obscures the useful truth that if you stop for 25 minutes...

Can’t locate auto high beam/dip on my IM5

There's an excellent solution here involving the human hand: When no headlights visible, move stalk to high beam position. When headlights appear, flick stalk back to dip beam position. I have found this does the business in any car.
