MG4 - How do I turn it off..?

It is a bad idea, no matter how many makers adopt it. Tesla, for example, has been the height of stupidity removing stalks, removing buttons, forcing touch screens for everything and removing the driver's display. None of these are "improvements" to make the driver's life better. In...

MG4 - How do I turn it off..?

The lack of an on/off button in MG EVs is silly. I don't know who thought: "Let's get rid of the one thing everyone looks for in a car because it will save them an instant and save us 37.5p on a button." but they deserve to be locked inside an MG4 with the Power On function disabled. Instead...

Tyre Pressure Monitoring System Failure MG4

I once picked up a Brand new Qashqai and the front o/s tyre was inflated to 75psi, exactly double the 38psi recommended! The inflation process appeared to have been done twice. Technicians are human and make mistakes. It always pays to check.

    MG4 X Power Vibe/Hum 65 to 75mph

Yes, but you have to bear in mind people with the vibes have sort out forums for this problem and are much more likely to respond if surveyed. So we can't say what such polls really mean, they are self-selecting to some degree. There's no doubt that a significant number of people have had this...

    MG4 X Power Vibe/Hum 65 to 75mph

Yes there does tend to be a negative bias, because people seek out forums for help with problems. However, problems should never be dismissed as if you suffer from them, you will want all the help you can get. The data we have from the (admittedly imperfect) surveys says MG do not do a good...

I wonder if pulling a fuse would easily fix that.

    Minor CCU connection problem

Yes, it sounds likely. Some cheaply made EVSEs use low quality components that are not really up to the job for the long term. Could be the case here.

    I hate my MG4!

Bear in mind the RXX series are only the infotainment software update. Some of the most important updates are to the various car modules that control the various systems and it is these being updated that make the most difference to many problems. It is a great shame that people seem to have...

That is true. Presumably because they sell to the EU too, which does have a Heat Pump fitted (except Ireland).

Anyone using car battery to power house ?

I find some people are like canaries in the coal mine. Their philosophy is: "I don't really understand X, but if I try doing Y to X and it doesn't blow up, everything must be fine". Until the canary dies, all is well. Telling them they are wrong is rarely effective, they need an actual...

Unintended acceleration in 2024 MG4 Trophy LR

I find the Adaptive regen setting is the best of all worlds because you get the light regen at high speed, which makes maintaining momentum easy, plus heavy regen at slow speeds, which makes traffic a doddle.

Yes indeed. Some banks do seem to have taken longer to get their heads around these new technologies than others. I did some consulting work for BoS three or four years ago, let's just say: "no comment".

To Update MG4 software or Not?

Be aware LKA and OPD behaviour is by design, I don't believe this will change with any updates. Also, speed limit recognition systems are never very good and always risk picking up signs next to the road you are on. But some things definitely improve with updates. Best to give your garage a...

    Contactless skimming

That may be a bank specific limitation you have. I have never had an ApplePay payment declined (except when the car reader is broken). I think it is fair to modify what I said to: "less likely to be declined, depending on your bank's security policies". My bank never declines authenticated...

Warning light added to show when the brake lights are on.

Yes, I am saying for me, auto-hold is quicker to release than the EPB when pressing the accelerator, I am aware I don't need to disengage the EPB manually. This is down to how the different systems work. No, the EPB isn't exactly slow, that is fair. All I do is brake to a stop, then...

    Contactless skimming

Another option is to pay using your phone's Apple Pay or Samsung/Google Pay, not a credit or debit card. Phone payments are more secure, can't be skimmed without your authorisation and don't leak your real account details when you do make a payment because they generate temporary one-time-only...

Warning light added to show when the brake lights are on.

A parking brake is a legal requirement, so MG had no choice about that. But with auto-hold it is largely redundant, except obviously auto-hold on MGs doesn't work in reverse. I find auto-hold quicker to move off from than the EPB, with the EPB I have to wait for the handbrake to physically...

    In praise of my XPower

Big recalls are very rare and only ever for safety issues. And no, this wouldn't normally be considered a safety issue. This isn't MG specific, the costs mean all manufacturers try their best to avoid it. If I had this problem, I'd be mad about it too. But I don't think it is likely anything...

    Auto high beams

I do mine manually, switched auto off when I first got the car. These technologies are immature - it isn't a bad idea but they need to work at least as well as doing it manually. Unfortunately we've had a raft if immature driver-assist systems pushed on us by the safety bodies, well meant but...

Absolutely, the convenience trumps every other consideration - I would like tougher laws and MOT testing to eliminate dazzling brake lights.

    In praise of my XPower

I've heard (in the UK at least), MG are investing to improve customer service/experience and understand premium buyers expect more. It is hard to know if we are seeing the results from this - my local dealer seem very capable and knowledgeable, but that might be just because they now have years...

Warning light added to show when the brake lights are on.

I never use the handbrake ever*. Autohold when driving and when I hit P at the end of a drive, the handbrake comes on automatically. I know this frustrates some people, but I don't believe the MG4 brake lights either large or dazzling and it is the way many people drive nowadays. *Except when...

    MG IM5 information & reviews

I think people can live with almost anything - the question is what is the tolerance for going through the uncomfortable dissonance of adapting to changes. There are various things - like lack of buttons, stalks, driver's displays - that provoke so much discomfort on first encounter that a test...

    Wish list of MG4 improvements

Yes, all would be good. I am amazed more makes don't have user profiles - hardly complex to implement and many people share their car, so simole saving settings isn't enough.

    A few minor bugs

This discussion makes me wonder if some people like OPD because they don't know about autohold and with OPD they can take their feet off the pedals - but so can you with Autohold. I like creep, it is very easy and controlled in traffic and I don't have to keep my foot on the accelerator to...

Warning light added to show when the brake lights are on.

To me this is a fault with traditional handbrakes. Why should there be a brake I can pull that doesn't put on the brake lights?! Also consider the emergency braking if you pull the handbrake and hold it.

Got my charging port replaced and now the yellow battery warning finally isn’t random anymore

Yes, I can see that with the shorter range and needing to run closer to zero charge and the need LFP has for regular balancing and calibration, it is more important. I have kind of let go of most of these practices with my LR car and just use it as I feel like. I don't need a perfectly...

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE - not working

Right, so it isn't comparable with the MG4 then. Vision-based systems are less reliable than radar and less mature, but many manufacturers seem to be adopting them.

Got my charging port replaced and now the yellow battery warning finally isn’t random anymore

I've always done it above 10%, eg 11-14%. I don't do everything by the book and I can't be bothered to drive around just to drop the charge to a set level - I don't think 10% is a magic figure, I think the battery just calibrates through the range and arguably going below 10% to calibrate would...

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE - not working

Understood. Am I right that the MGS5 doesn't have a front radar and that it is a vision system that does the detection? Suggesting then it is a software problem.
  40. tsedge

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE - not working

Collision avoidance systems are not foolproof. They may detect and save you, they may not. I would certainly not recommend anyone depend on the car stopping itself in all situations. I tend to get false positives with my MG4 and to avoid it slamming the brakes on, I set it to Alert only, so I...
