Tutorial for updating maps on ZS EV Gen 2 (avoiding mgmotor.eu)

@hmadsen
Can you get a checksum of your downloaded file, it would give us something to compare to?
My downloaded 22Q1 maps.rar md5 checksum is 7AD772E70A42B4CBCC0D5EAAF1A68B07
To be honest, i dont think the problem is with the RAR file.

If the RAR file had an error, i would think it would throw an error because it was unable to extract.

My advice..

Use a PC to format the USB drive, and use a PC to unpack and transfer the files.

If this fails, try using a different USB drive.

Well, after no success with preparing a USB stick with maps on my Mac I used the same USB stick and formatted it on a Windows PC. With the same downloaded map file extracted onto it, this time it worked fine.

So there's something the car doesn't like about Apple computers.
I concluded exactly the same - sadly, we don't have a Windows PC

Successfully updated my maps using these instructions but all the speeds are displayed in KM now. Anyone know how to change it back to miles?

Yeah I found that but it was already set to miles. Fortunately after turning off and on again it's all back to mile again.
I was concerned because I downloaded the manual at the same time as the maps update and it's all in German 🤷
Thanks for the reply though 👍

Patience patience, it will get there.
Patience paid off. Finally downloaded the latest map update👍🏻

I would expect OTA firmware to be a lot smaller.

I regularily receive updates for my android phone (The infotainment runs android) and these are just "incremental updates" that are a lot smaller than full updates. Incremental updates only replaces files that has been updated. If you do an incremental update, a few hundred MB's would get you a long way.

No matter what, they promised OTA update functionality, so i expect them to do OTA updates. :)
The ‘ota updates’ is a con on MG’s part. It only does the media unit. For anything else, it still needs the dealer. There is no mention of ota updates on the mg uk site now.
It might be a chip shortage thing, just as the models now no longer have a Sun roof.

The worst part is that they haven't even given any OTA updates for the infotainment until now.

There are a lot of bad spelling, badly labelled buttons and so on, i would love to have those fixed, but honestly what is the point in spending the time to document it, and send it to them, when there is never any updates.

I would also imagine that, since the navigation app is probably a "fork" from the Android Here app, that they would be able to update the app with stuff, that the official android app gets from Here.

Lastly, but certainly not least important, is the fact that the radio clearly runs android, and android, the same way as all other OSes have security flaws.

Google releases android updates every month, and if this radio is based off of android, they really should release OTA firmware updates, if for nothing else, then the security related stuff. Remember, this infotainment has a direct internet connection, so it will be vulnerable for attacks if they do not maintain the system.

In the coming years, they might even need to upgrade the version of android the infotainment is built upon, as google, only releases security updates for, i think the last 3 version of android.

If this radio was based on, say android 10, then it will only receive security updates until version 14 comes around, and that is about a year from now. (Android 13 is probably being released in August 2022, so August 2023, Android 14 will come around)

The Danish site still says "OTA updates" for the "luxury" variant (Similar to the Connect in the UK)

The French site has moved the OTA updates into the iSmart section now, so implying it is only for the infotainment system, but it's still misleading.

I bet on the annoyings .DS_Store files created by "finder".

Try to recursively delete this files from "terminal" or, but I never used it, this software

I thought that there must be some files dropped by the OS or its worker apps. The Windows equivalent pest file seems to be "desktop.ini". Though it doesn't seem to drop those on external drives as much.

I wonder though why the mere presence of unnecessary files would confuse the map software. Maybe it insists on finding the files in a certain location in the root directory, or even assume that the files are allocated to certain clusters on the device. It just depends on how quick and dirty of a "file system" they implemented. So deleting the unexpected files could leave unexpected "holes" in the directory, or the important files allocated to different clusters. I hope it's not that lazy, but you never know. If they used a cut-down Linux distro as you'd expect, then I would think that the extra files would not be a bother at all.
