MG ZS EV
Finally, the MG ZS EV arrived on Tuesday.

I have purchased many new cars in my life and this is the one that got me excited.

On Tuesday and Wednesday studied the manual and took it out for drives to acclimatise us.

More critical because of my Mother’s 97th birthday party on Saturday 120 miles cross country or 170 along motorways.

Did all the planning, the Motorway was the safer choice in case we needed a charge. But according to the book if we go cross country we can get there and back on one charge.

The hotel (£300 a night for this special occasion would let us plug in. So that will take off the pressure.

Allowed 4 hours for a 3 hour drive to arrive for lunch.

Set off and the first 40 miles on a Motorway.

The Cruise control would not engage, the light on the dashboard was yellow and ready to go. The dashboard cheerfully declared no issue or errors.

But the cruise control would not engage.

Turn off, turn back on.

Still won’t engage.

Pulled over ‘rebooted’ the car.

No change

Pulled out manual on my car.

Everything checks out, everything is good just press the button on the end of the stalk and

Nope

So carried reading manual, this is a three hour drive and really want the cruise to work.

But alas, no joy.

Even tried the entertainment system reboot

No joy

Called the MG dealership - no use

Drive to dealership, they were confident it was driver error right up until, ‘The cruise control won’t turn on’

So now left 1 hour further away from my destination now having to do a 4 hour journey in 2:20 mins on the motorway way because now we will have to recharge.

It is funny that the greater the expectation the greater disappointment when it fudges up.

The MG dealer I got the car from declared this is an MG issue not a dealership issue and I need to take it up with the MG UK.

So now forced to do a long drive, arriving very late, without the use of cruise control.

Extra bonus is that CarPlay is playing up, Google Maps keeps going blank and the MG display keeps going off to the recharge screen on its own

This feels like a lemon.

First impressions of the MG ZS EV - sketchy and unreliable.

A massive disappointment.

On Monday when I get back decide what I need to do about it.

At the moment suffering massive regret at the purchase.

Not sure if it will help, but check through the options list on the infotainment screen, something may have been turned off, blocking the MG Pilot systems. The other thing may be the camera is not calibrated and this would also stop some systems working. It IS a dealer issue.

One you had turned cruise on, you correctly set your desired speed?

Have you tried the double pull on the lower stick to enable MG Pilot? You have to first enable it in the screen setting menu.

Once enabled with the double pull on the lower stick on the left side of the steering column you can activate it once you are driving by pressing the button on the end of the same stick. Once active a light push on the stick will deactivate it. A short pull will re-activate it at the same speed. Flicking the stick up or down will increase or decrease the target speed by 5mph. Twisting the stick will increase or decrease the distance the car maintains to to car in front.

If you push the stick hard away from you it will completely disable cruise control and appear to do nothing. This position of the stick is used for Speed Limit Control and needs turning on every time you power the car down to re-enable it via the main touch screen menus. It may well be that this is where the stick is. A hard pull will enable the ability to access cruise control.

However, as you visited a dealer they would have checked all of this and been fully aware of how the car works :)

A poor usb cable can cause issues with CarPlay and Android Auto.

So this is a problem when people engage without knowledge they just look stupid!

I have a fractured vertebra And driving for long periods with my foot on an accelerator causes pain and back spasms.

That is why I always buy a car that has a Cruise Control.

I had hoped, expected, that the car would last longer before developing faults.

I can’t believe the lengths that people go to to make a point and still prove their stupidity.

The dealership checked it and confirmed a fault that will require time in a garage.

We stopped on our way to get lunch and topped up at a GRIDSERVE, our first public charge.

My wife was tired so I said I would drive for a while.

Once back on the Motorway I tried the cruise again and this time it worked, so it is an intermittent fault and I suspect not a loose wire or dodgy switch.

Will see how it does on the way home tomorrow.

I am pretty good at RTFM so was able to follow the directions.

The dealership confirmed a fault and it will require garage time.

As mentioned above after a stop and 25kWh charge and the Cruise would enable you to move it from ready to active. So an intermittent fault :-(

Thanks, it looks like an intermittent fault.

I’ll raise an issue with MG UK Ltd Monday.

I do need the cruise as it saves me a lot of pain in my lower back, so every car I have purchased since 1993 has had a working cruise control.

Hopefully they can diagnose the issue and rectify, the intermittent nature of the issue concerns me, why would a 25kWh charge restore the function?

I’ll have to set an expectation of three repairs attempts before a vehicle replacement.

Sounds like the auxiliary battery may have been low causing the variety of faults. Charging at rapid charger would have also charged auxiliary battery?
Driving around to discover & attempting to remedy the issue would have been charging the 12v battery?🤔

I was about to advise same for double pull on stalk as same thing happened to me before I realised pushing the stalk away disengaged ACC

This happened to me, it was that the boot wasn't closed properly.

You'll be able to tell as the orange light on the door lock doesn't come on, or flashes weirdly.

Give the boot a good slam shut and see if it sorts it.

Actually having read the thread a bit more I'm confident that's what it is.

And to add to that a bit more, you probably could do with trying an alternative iPhone cable to rule that out. It was just exiting out of that to the last screen you were in, since it had lost connection.

There are some circumstances where the cruise control will not engage, glare on the camera caused by bright/low sunlight for example.

I don’t think so tried it repeatedly for a few hours. Even the dealership could not get it going.

After a 120 miles we stopped and did our first rapid charge up to 80% then the Cruise started working again.
