MG ZS EV Buyers Remorse kicking in

Finally, the MG ZS EV arrived on Tuesday.

I have purchased many new cars in my life and this is the one that got me excited.

On Tuesday and Wednesday studied the manual and took it out for drives to acclimatise us.

More critical because of my Mother’s 97th birthday party on Saturday 120 miles cross country or 170 along motorways.

Did all the planning, the Motorway was the safer choice in case we needed a charge. But according to the book if we go cross country we can get there and back on one charge.

The hotel (£300 a night for this special occasion would let us plug in. So that will take off the pressure.

Allowed 4 hours for a 3 hour drive to arrive for lunch.

Set off and the first 40 miles on a Motorway.

The Cruise control would not engage, the light on the dashboard was yellow and ready to go. The dashboard cheerfully declared no issue or errors.

But the cruise control would not engage.

Turn off, turn back on.

Still won’t engage.

Pulled over ‘rebooted’ the car.

No change

Pulled out manual on my car.

Everything checks out, everything is good just press the button on the end of the stalk and

Nope

So carried reading manual, this is a three hour drive and really want the cruise to work.

But alas, no joy.

Even tried the entertainment system reboot

No joy

Called the MG dealership - no use

Drive to dealership, they were confident it was driver error right up until, ‘The cruise control won’t turn on’

So now left 1 hour further away from my destination now having to do a 4 hour journey in 2:20 mins on the motorway way because now we will have to recharge.

It is funny that the greater the expectation the greater disappointment when it fudges up.

The MG dealer I got the car from declared this is an MG issue not a dealership issue and I need to take it up with the MG UK.

So now forced to do a long drive, arriving very late, without the use of cruise control.

Extra bonus is that CarPlay is playing up, Google Maps keeps going blank and the MG display keeps going off to the recharge screen on its own

This feels like a lemon.

First impressions of the MG ZS EV - sketchy and unreliable.

A massive disappointment.

On Monday when I get back decide what I need to do about it.

At the moment suffering massive regret at the purchase.
Yes I've had the same problem and it was caused because the 5th door (the boot), wasn't closed properly. The orange light in the drivers door will be blinking and your cc won't work because the system thinks a door is open, so the car isn't driving.... Unfortunately the display doesn't show that the backdoor isn't closed properly.
Good luck, I'm anxious to know if this solved your problem.

So.... what happened on the way home then?
It was all good…

Never been able to get the built in satnav working.

Set it to go home, press Go and it just stays locked on that location.

Try again several miles, give a different location, calculates route, Press Go and it moves to the same location as it was for the first time you set it.

Restarting the car seems to reset location, but basically the car does not show any travel in the car.

I have reported the issue.

A few other niggles, the dealer stuck their sticky label across the back window over the heating elements and blocks rear vision somewhat. Whatever they stuck on with is staying there as it is extremely difficult to remove. So will get the dealership to remove it when they fix the satnav.

Lastly, Leaseplan put in car floor mats, but at the front they won’t lock down, fittings in the wrong place, which is just a silly annoyance until I can get them replaced with proper fitted ones.

We have just done another longer trip overnight, (I have done more long trips in the Last two weeks than I have in 2 years.

I ‘discovered’ MG Pilot, it is AWESOME!! Really great on the motorway.

Overall very impressed by the MG ZS EV LR, incredibly disappointed with Nathaniel MG in Bridgend, they are just worthless.

They tell me they only sell the cars and are not responsible for their manufacture or checking whether the car is working, they just send you to call MG UK Ltd, who never answer the phone and just have message saying please try again later.

So great car, unresponsive dealership and manufacturer.

I am pretty sure it was not an open door issue, as when we stopped at the dealership we removed luggage and items from the car, opening and shutting all 5 doors, the problem was still evident.

The dealership was condescending, convinced it was a user issue, until they couldn’t get it working either……….. not so clever then were they :)

Did you try checking to see if the doors and boot were closed?
I must admit it was not something I checked for, or thought of checking.

Never occurred to me that it would allow you to drive with doors open but disable cruise control.

Quirky …..

I’ll test that and see if I can repeat the issue. I hate inconsistent errors …..

Thanks!

What did you do before you had cruise control? There are 2 pedals on the floor, the righthand one is called the accelerator (it makes the car go faster) and the left one is the brake pedal, it slows the car down when pushed.

You need to turn off dead reckoning in the sat nav, there's a few threads in it here.

I'm still convinced the cruise control wasn't working as it thought a door was open. Could be a faulty sensor or the boot needs adjusting though.

It'll just be the boot. It doesn't let you drive with the doors open. Goes straight back to park when you try to move.

Wow, that's a tad condescending don't you think? The OP has said in the thread, cruise control is a must due to a health issue that makes it uncomfortable to keep a constant pedal pressure. There is a fault with the brand new car and it's not overly helpful to reply with something like that! Whether or not I need to use it I would be pretty miffed if I took delivery of a new car to find that key advertised driver aids were malfunctioning.

Hi,

I have had a similar experience with the car electronic systems. The car has gone back to the dealer for software updates 3 times since I got it in early March.

1. Car play was freezing
2. The Infotainment unit would freeze and need a reboot
3. The car's internal clock keeps resetting to 1 Jan 2019 and keeps giving me warnings about needing service (since it initially thinks it is 1 Jan 2019 and then the clock jumps to July 2022 and probably triggering the annual service warning)

1 and 2 have been sorted out, as they seem to fail far less frequently since the software upgrades, item 3 still an issue. Will be writing to MG about it.

One thing I complained initially about is the fact that in the invoice there was a £300 charge for "delivery" which the dealer said it was for prepping the car, and doing a thorough check before I picked it up. I would expect you would have had a similar charge, and the testing of the cruise control should have been included in that. My complaint included that the tires were not properly inflated and the battery was not fully charged.

I would also add here that you should consider the fact that "you get what you pay for" and the MG service from dealers is included here. When I bough my BMW 520D from the dealer, their service was great, but then again there was a premium for the price.

Overall my experience has been good, and I would say that once the software issues have been sorted out for your car, after probably multiple visits to the dealer, it will run much better than it does today. For what the MG provides, I do not think the premium prices of Tesla, BMW, Mercedes etc are worth it for my pocket, but if I had money to burn, I would definitely have gone for one of the premium brands.

That reply was made after I read the original post, which didn't mention the drivers disability, as I too have a similar problem I would be inclined to take more breaks to relive the pressure.

We experienced number three also. The correct date is announced on the first start up of the day, but subsequent start ups are announced at 1 January 19. We have just turned this feature off as it was so annoying.

Before I had a fractured vertebrae it was not an issue. But since then only purchase cars that have cruise for long journeys :)

Ha! MG Nathaniel in Bridgend! Absolutely useless - totally agree.

The setting up of these cars seems to need a complete read of the handbook before using. Glitches do occur, as long as they can be sorted, I would not worry. My main reluctance to purchase an MG EV would be the dealer customer care. Bridgend appear to just want to sell the cars, take the profit and fob off the customer. A strong letter to MG headquarters would not go a miss.

I will hang on to see more customer reports regarding dealerships and the warranty issues. A 7 year warranty sounds fantastic but it depends on the dealership and the small print! These are budget cars but they doo look good value. The jury is out, as far as I am concerned. I thank everyone who contributes to the forum and shares their experience - far better than a motoring journalist's view!

The problem for me is not just the announcement of the wrong date, but also the service warning that keeps popping up on the dashboard! Yellow warning ⚠️ and “Maintain Vehicle Soon” which I have to keep resetting.

I am sure you may have done this but if you have had a service do you check that it has been reset, I have had few time so alway check before I leave the place.

Re. the mats sometimes the plastic fasteners on the mats need rotating so they fit over the locating studs on the floor.

Sounds like you were very unlucky. All the cruise control and pilot functions worked fine in mine from day one, I know this is no consolation. I have turned lane assist off as I like to give lorries a wide birth when passing them and the car fighting me I found annoying.
