My MG ZS Ev will not connect to the 50 kW chargers today, I eventually found a 7 kW pod point where it connected but the car reads slow charging and it’s only charging at about 3kW. Any idea what the problem is?

Is it a free PodPoint as they often don't kick out the full 7kW.
What rapid did you try?

I tried a 50 kw genie and a 50 kw instavolt yesterday, a 22 kw ev charger online and the instavolt again twice, then the 7kw free pod point at Tesco. The only one which will charge is the Tesco one but only at 3kw. It reads slow charging on the screen, it usually just says charging.

Do you do a lot of rapid charging?
Just put it on your EVSE over night, what percentage are you currently on?

Currently on 40%. I don’t do much rapid charging, I don’t have a home charger so nearly always use Tesco but used the new charging station near the M180 /Humber bridge once last week .

I use 50 kW rapids all the time, don't have home charging, never had a problem. 🤔

So, if Tesco say it’s 7 kw, why do you only get 3.5 kw. As a novice, would like to know, thanks.

There has been a lot about some free PodPoint EVSE units not giving out 7kW, some seem to be throttled back, were you the only car on it?

If you use the same cable at home, or on other chargers, and get around 7kW, then it’s the charger.

There is a “resistor signal” system built into the plug that lets the charger in your car know what the maximum current your cable can handle. Some cables will only support 16Amp (3.5kW), some will allow 32Amp (7kW).

Your car asks the charger for the current it wants based on the cable rating. However, there is no certainty that the charger will give the requested current if it hasn’t got it.

Assuming you are in the UK.
