LED bulbs for MG ZS EV headlights

Philips X-tremeVision Pro150 HB3 have a longer lifespan quoted by manufacturer than the Osram Nightbreakers if sticking to legal halogens - 450 hours compared to 110-210 hours.
They would be my next choice after LEDS or when the MOT comes up. ;)

Managed to get the bulbs in. It looks like the smaller lug doesnt actually sit inside the metal seat (this seemed to be the case for the original bulbs for both sides) - once I had realised this they went in ok.

Re-attempted to fit my NovSights (N38 9005 BTW) tonight.
Unfortunately the one that I'd damaged slightly, although it fitted and worked, the fan was making a very loud noise (compared to the other one), so I've had to take them back out :(

I'd made myself a nice 3d printed tool to insert the collar too. It's a much better way to fit these; Remove the collar from the new LED bulb housing, fit the collar into the socket (using 3d printed tool), then just push the new LED housing into place at the orientation required (leds at 3/9Oclock).

If anyone wants a tool to fit these bulbs let me know and I'll print them one.

Do the original dust covers fit back on ok with the Novsight N38 LEDs?

Yes wasn't a problem
One last question before I order a pair of these N38. I just discovered they have a small inline box attached. I take it you were able stuff everything into the light housing on the ZS before replacing the dust cover?

Yes that's right, there's room to get it inside.
Just don't break it like I did, the fitting was really tight which is why I fitted it as I did in the end

Thank you for your time with my questions. I have installed the NovSight N38s and wow what an improvement. I can see why you needed to 3D print a special tool. I struggled to get the locating ring/chuck to turn into position. But I noticed 3 philips head screws holding the headlamps locating/retaining ring in place. Slackening these off made installation easy and then simply tightened them back up and inserted the led bulb. Thanks again for your advice.

Before you change your lights, think about the people you are dazzling because you have put lights in not designed for your car.

By the fact people on here admit they change them back before the mot clearly show they know they are breaking the law.

No dazzle from my lights, have had them aligned properly in my mates workshop with a beam tester. Interestingly the passenger side headlamp was too low and needed raising, it was as if the guy in the MG factory set the headlamp beam heights for a left hand drive when the headlamps clearly have a right hand drive cut off. With the shade/shutter action for the dipped/high beam within the projector, the cut off is razor sharp, I wonder if this type of projector inhibits dazzle? Is the dazzling problem largely from LEDs fitted in reflector headlights not projectors especially those with a high/low beam shutter? And possibly the UK MoT rule is a blanket rule for all headlamps, which makes no regard for the difference between projector and reflector headlights? Fortunately, for me, MoT rules don't apply outside The UK and my LED equiped projector headlights are still a pass in my country according to my mechanic friend, but not LED equiped reflector headlights.

You're kinda sorta right...

The MOT Inspection Manual, section 4.1.4 says putting the LEDs (or HIDs) into a non approved housing would make it a failure.

But section 4.1.5 only says that levelling systems should be checked if fitted, and 4.1.6 only applies to cleaning systems fitted after late 2

One of the problems is that not all headlamps are ‘type approved’ to use in the UK.

If you buy them online you have no idea what you are buying, even Halfords sell headlights that are marked for ‘off road use only’ which are not legal on UK roads

Make sure they are E marked and ECE approved.

The ZS headlights are almost identical in operation to my previous Prius which had OEM LEDs
The ZS has a single bulb with a shutter for dipped to block off the high beam.
The Prius had an array of LEDs with a shutter for dip to block off the high beam.
The only difference is the ZS has a bulb and the Prius had an array of LEDS.

Glad you got it all done ok.

I can't bring myself to buy another pack of 2 when I only need 1 more to replace the one I broke trying to fit it, so I just have the originals in!
