Intelligent Octopus

I've checked at 2200hrs tonight and it just started charging. I set my upper limit at 100% and to finish by 0630.

The battery actually was at 83% when it started so will be at 100% in the next 15 minutes so it is working.

(SR Trophy Connect with Ohme Pro charger.)

I'm going to stick with GO. I have solar and a battery so I can shift as much as possible to the off peak rate. Most of my import goes into the car at 7'5p / kWh for 4 hrs.

I have emailed Octopus but this is bugging me. The Octopus Go tariff of 7.5p for a 4 hour session. Is that tied to the EV Charger? So not able to use for the dishwasher or washing machine at 7.5p in that time frame ?

Octopus Go is only for EV owners, but all of your usage during the off-peak time is at the low rate.
Intelligent Octopus requires a "compatible" car* or charge point**. You get 6 hours of fixed off-peak that you can use for anything, but the deal is that the car charging is done at times and powers at Octopus's choice to reach the target that you set, and all of your usage at those times will be charged at the off-peak rate.
* Cars with a suitable API, i.e. not MG but such as Tesla.
** Charge points with a suitable API, currently only Ohme.

What's in it for Ohme? It means that they can load shift the car charging to suit their costs.

Edit: from another forum, here's an example of Octopus load shifting a user's charging. Note them starting and stopping, and varying rates, all in 15 minute segments. I'm not sure whether my MG5 would throw a hissy fit at that treatment.

It applies to the whole property.... So set your timer for the washing machine etc and enjoy the savings.

Thanks for clearing the fog! I have the MG HS PHEV as about 95% of my driving is local with the occasional holiday run. I only charge up about 2 or 3 times a week sometimes 1 or 2. I have initiated a change to Octopus Go and then found this seems to need an engineers visit to adapt my smart meter. I thought it would be switched at Octopus, then read a post about linking Octopus to an EV Charger and alarm bells sounded......
Phew, thought I'd scored an own goal......

When I switched to GO the clause about EVs didn't exist. As I have solar and a house battery I used, and still do, if needed charge my house battery on the go tariff. Just recently I got an upgrade to the battery which doubled its capacity so for the last two sunny months I managed to shift 90% of my usage to the off peak rate. This includes car charging.

Go didn't used to have a requirement for an EV. When I renewed the call handler casually asked which EV I had. It would be pretty clear to them I only charge once a month (balance charge) as 99% of my charging is done foc at work.

I do time shift what I can, but I don't need to run the dishwasher and washing machine every day.

For these tarrifs do you need a smart meter fitted ? as i live in a rural location and no mobile signal hence cant have a smart meter !

Yes a smart meter is a requirement as you are meter is read every 1/2 hour and you are bill is totalled at the end of the billing period (1 month).

No good to me i have even looked into economy 7 but they want £150 for a meter - and then the day rates go up

A smart meter is free and it will do Economy 7.
Think they are talking about a analogue Economy 7 not smart as no mobile signal (I know the smart meters use a all networks sim so may work where you don't get mobile signal)

I don't think they're too strict on this.
My neighbour has just renewed her Go tariff and she doesn't have an EV.
It was a very casual "oh what EV do you have?", as if they were ticking the box to confirm I had one. Octopus installed my charge point, so they should know already. I think if you're already on go, it's a very loose rule. If you want to get onto Go as a new customer I believe they are insisting you do have an EV.

I was already with Octopus, and after having my EVSE installed and armed with my MG order number, I enquired about Octopus Go. I wasn’t asked for any information, and was on the new tariff within 48 hours. Fortunately, I can switch some domestic electricity use to the 12.30 - 4.30 time slot, (so it’s not entirely wasted) as I don’t yet have my MG…….☹️
