Intelligent Octopus 6 hours at 7.5p per KW

Hi just noticed that Octopus offer a special 6 hour rate for certain cars and wall chargers, the usual suspects beginning with T etc, but you can add your car and charger to the list as they are “working hard” to add new cars and chargers, so if a lot of us MG owners put in a request then maybe, just maybe they will add us too.

I did look at changing to Intelligent when updating recently, but....... Am I right in saying that you can only charge the car at 7.5p/kw, whereas with Go you can also run the immersion heater, washing machine, tumble drier etc?

My personal issue with this is I'd gain 2 hours at 7.5p but have to pay an extra 7.5p for every hour in between

It wouldn't work for me, I don't really need the extra 2 hours..
 
Unless you already have an Octopus account you can't join they are not taking new customers, I have tried but told to wait but no time scale

Did you ring them, they were taking new customers, they just needed to be sure that you know what you're doing.

I 'phoned Octopus at the end of June 2022. I arranged to transfer from Shell Energy at the same prices as Shell Energy.
The transfer was last week, so now just waiting to see if/when my Wallbox Pulsar Plus charger is added to the Intelligent Octopus tariffs.

I am with you on this as am on octopus go
 
I have a feeling, that because the MG has no smart capabilities. It won't be added. The best hope is they add your smart charger.

Im guessing the extra hours are a trade off to allow them to collect extra data and test their software. Getting everything ready for the government master plan of controlling when we charge our cars, hopefully whilst still charging them as much as we need at the cheapest point possible.
 
The rates are too high for me, 7.5p between 23:30 and 05:30 all other times it's just over 39p
The standing charge increases from just over 23p a day to just over 44p a day!!

I think I will stick with Octopus Go!

In October Octopus Go charges will increase to that level when your current fix ends after that.
 
Yes, hadn't realised that my Octopus Go fixed rate ends in Feb 2023.
It's going to be an expensive winter for a lot of people that's for sure!
 
I looked at Agile, but they just bumped the max price to 55p from 35p. Around the time I took out my 16p Go, everyone else was paying 20-25p and Octopus were offering a 2 year fix at 25p - I laughed at the time, little did I know I would be paying 40p this year and thankful for it!

My fix end March next year :(
 
Looks like I will change to the new Octopus rates then look at solar and or battery storage.
It's a managed estate and they are funny about solar on the roof at the minute.
So do I get a battery installed and charge that on the cheap rate, then hopefully later fit the solar panels.
Can't afford to do everything in one hit!

It's a minefield out there at the minute!

It's a costly business. But even a single panel installation saves the VAT on the battery.

Is there an outbuilding that you can put a panel on?

You are gambling on there remaining a significant differential between peak and off-peak pricing to justify batteries alone without solar.

I don't think it's much of a gamble unless there's a massive shift in energy usage and/or industry and offices start working all night as well as all day.
Time of day tariffs, e.g. Economy 7 have been around since 1978, I can't see a reason for them to stop anytime in the near future.
