Bricked at the charger - should there be a nationwide recall?

A Eurotunnel charger on the UK side got me. 'System fault - HV battery disconnected - stop safely'. The Trophy LR is now outside the Ashford MG dealer and we are in a Premer Inn about 200 yards away. Waiting for the garage to open. With the AA patrol we tried the system reboot options. The MG advised fix (elsewhere on the forum) of disconnecting the 12v battery and then clamping the negative and positive cables together for 10 mins to discharge the residual current/system memory and force a system reboot did not work. The OBD generic general fault reset did not work. The (temporary) replacement of the crap MG 12v battery with a beefier Bosch did not work. Praying to Saint Anthony...nope. This problem is often enough mentioned on the forum and I have seen mention of a software fix. If there is such a fix it needs to be applied urgently to all affected vehicles. MG pull your finger out.
It should be enough for a recall yes, this shouldn't be happening

I have not experienced any issues with my long range Trophy Connect. I don’t fancy the idea of a forced recall to “fix” a problem I don’t have. The chances of any software updated not “fixing”, but “breaking” my car make me want to stay away from the dealer.

Clearly, if my car had shown the problem then I would have liked it “fixed”. I would still like to have known what exactly they had been doing to fix the issue and what was causing it.
Says the person who doesn't use rapid chargers 🙄

A good enough reason not too I would have said 🤣.
Who wants to be stuck in front of one of these things “Bricked” for hours on end, not me that’s for sure 😢.
I will avoid using a rapid at all costs, until I am assured that the software update has been 100% effective and totally cured the issue.
Been down this dark road enough times with my Gen 1 ZS EV.
Update after update, after update !.
There is not that many face lift models out there at the moment.
The owners who are required to use a rapid must be very reluctant / nervous when using one, just in case their car is going to get bricked.
Owners who CAN avoid using them are doing so I believe.
WHEN more facelifts start hitting the roads and using rapids on a regular basis, without e counting problems, then I will be reassured that the software fix has cured the problem.
For the mean time, I intend to avoid there use.
“Once bitten twice shy” I think is the expression used in this case ?.

For what is worth we were down in Cornwall the week before last. I used rapids exclusively, probably 6/7 times without issue. Only once where the charger was out of commission and wouldn't release the plug did I have a sort of issue. I just used the release cable to free it. I used Gridserve. BP and one other. Perhaps I was just lucky 🤔

Can you confirm that when your ac charging now and press unlock that charging pauses and you can remove cable before it starts again?

Oh …… That’s a good question 🙋🏻‍♂️.
I will have to try it and let you know.
I am usually tucked up in bed when the charging commences, I have a cheap 4.5p/ KWh “Off Peak Tariff” that commences at 1.00am at lasts for five hours.
My previous Gen 1 would release the cable straight away, when I was charging and then unlocked the car.
It had received the software update to allow this though.

@Lovemyev
I've noticed the AC charging behaviour changes once the update is done. Basically if you unlock the car it pauses AC charging so you can remove the cable. Previously you'd have to stop the charge from the screen or app.

Probably a good way of working out of your car has had the update.

Nice one !.
Yeah - I had forgotten about @Merry (s) post, thanks for reminding me !.
Sounds like a good way to tell if your car has already been updated pre delivery.
I collected my car on the 18th March so it’s a bit of a 50 / 50 chance ?.
The only chance it has been done, is because the lads at Chorley supplied and did the PDI checks.
It may have just missed the update ?.
Chorley is a 200 mile around trip for us, so I would like to hold off until the first service is due, if possible !.
Thanks for the reminder @N2STY 👍

Hi @N2STY - Bit of an update on the above subject.
I did try the unlock while A/C charging on my home wall box today.
I turned off my "delayed charging" and plugged in the car.
Charging commenced, I let it charge for a minute or so, then pressed the unlock on the key fob.
It unlocked the car, but the car continued charging, I tried pulling on the charging cable, but it was locked firmly into the charging port.
I had to enter the car ( it was already unlocked of course ) and then boot up the car into the READY state, which felt a little alien to my normal process of things, I have to say.
The car instantly warns that it is still on charge in the centre dash panel straight away !.
Then using the head unit, I entered the charging screen and pressed the "End Charge" button.
I left the car and tried removing the charging cable.
Yes - The cable had now released.
So, it would appear that my car has not been updated with the "Anti Bricking" fix then.
When I think about it, the fix was not released until a few weeks after I had collected my car, so it was not available to be installed at the time of the PDI checks.
Thanks (y).

To be fair I used an ecotricity CCS with my SR MG5, worked fine, then a corsa e came along and it wouldn't work for them no matter what we tried.

The other half is getting your local dealer to actually agree there is an update. That’s rather where I am now…🤣
I intend to take my car back to the lads at the Chorley group, to try and ensure that when I have its first service done, plus any updates are done correctly !.
It's a 200 mile around trip, and we pass at least five other MG dealers on route !.
But, they have very knowledgeable EV staff who are better trained and experienced staff who can deal with this type of software issue.
The car was supplied by them and I am happy to travel that distance, to ensure my car is treated in the best manner possible.
Miles R. works for the Chorley group and provides brilliant information to this forum.
He was the first person to provide any concrete information on a fix from MG that would help to correct the "Bricking" issue, when using a CCS rapid unit.
Choosing your dealer carefully, will play a big part in getting your car sorted correctly.

@Lovemyev I may have to do the same but it is a 430 mile round trip from my neck of the woods so trying to avoid that if possible since, at least on the way there, I would have to recharge once using a 7 kW charger that's 10 hours to get there - phew!

I get the distinct impression that the dealership are not well served by MG UK

Cinderford MG are excellent and very good knowledgeable staff. Not quite so far from Somerset :)

My LR Trophy has had the 'bricking' update, but it now appears to sometimes do a reboot after overnight charging i.e. the same errors and warning lights and reboot of the entertainment screen as if you have taken your foot off the break too early during the start sequence. My EV charger stops at 2.30am and then I unplug it in the morning after unlocking the car. I believe the car is now still looking for a charge when I unplug it? Anyone else had similar issues?
