I'm getting a 5 LR Exclusive next month as a company car. I'm really not looking forward to it as we were sold the EV dream on the VW id.3 (what I'd looked at for myself) but that got replaced a month later with the 5LR due to lead times (I personally would have waited). The effect inside the business has been quite interesting, of the future recipients of the MG5 who currently drive the Audi A3s, most of them have now requested the car allowances instead normally!
Unfortunately, as they gave us a day and a half to make up our minds I knew I'd have no time to pick a car, get prices, and get a test drive in so I had to accept (also after deciding to go back to the company motor scheme I put some of the savings towards my wife's new Puma leaving me little left me to get a decent motorway runner) so I'm looking for a bit of reassurance as the only positive I'm seeing is cheap running costs if I beat the others to one of the two charging points at work that and I can do some decent tip runs in it.
I have a nearly two-year-old in a rear facing seat and I'm worried by the lack of space in the rear of the vehicle for his seat and I'm rather used to a good arm rest, does that one in the brochure photo slide forwards? I'd say that the screen looks really low in the dash, I have a similar sized screen in my 18 plate Seat that I think is too small and too low but it is at the top of the dash, how are you all getting on with it? Due to a lack of space at home I keep the pushchair in my boot and I'd like to keep my golf clubs in there too but the boot looks small with the seats up, is it?

Obviously it all depends on your expectations, but the MG5 is my first EV (after a lot of medium hatchbacks) and I love driving it. I'd have to check the armrest, but there seems plenty of room in the back seats - I've not sat there myself, but I've had 3 adults sitting in the back seat and they reported plenty of room back there.

As far as the boot's concerned; it's an estate car - the boot is massive (compared to a hatchback). And if it's still not big enough for you the back seats go down.

Good morning Tweed98. I’ve had my 5LR exclusive for almost exactly a year after a ZS first Gen for nearly two years.
the five is a nicer car all round for comfort, space, bootcap and handling on twisty roads i find to be more stable. Its normally my wife and I and we’re curre getting 4.7 miles per kWh and there’s around 60 of those in a full battery so there’s a good range available.
as for capacity,I’ve driven with four adults, a dog and all our luggage without complaints for a three hour journey.
im now retired and managed 10,000 miles in the last year but really wish I’d had this vehicle whilst I was working all round Scotland covering many more miles than that (1000 miles a week sometimes)
charging infrastructure would have caused some problems then but leaving full each morning and topping up within 25 and 80 percent as and when public chargers are encountreed works fine these days.
hope you enjoy the car, it really is a fine drive.

Hi, I have had my MG5 SR for almost 18 months and have done 21k miles.
We often have a wheel chair in the boot and have had wine coolers and a tumble dryer in it.
The rear seats are fine for three adults although plugging in the seat belts is fun.
See if you can get a test drive even if it is in a second hand one.

The overwhelming majority of (abundant) MG5 reviews are positive so I'm sure you're already well aware that it's a good car. Is it just the badge that puts you off?

I was never a fan of Rover or MG but I do understand that this is a totally different brand. MG has no dealers close to us so I wouldn't have considered it for a personal car, and checking the car out in the short time they gave us to make our minds up was not possible.
As for reviews they mostly say about cheap to buy and cheap running costs but they are things that I don't pay as it is a company car.
Of course there is a bit of badge envy, I'm 42 and was looking forward to a nice new modern looking car with loads of techy bits I liked, not the safety stuff, I never selected those on previous cars due to an inflated sense of my driving ability. The id.3 was also a car I had tried and liked and wanted. The MG5 is, well, a car my Grandad would liked and the tech inside it is noticeably older!

Can you persuade them to wait for the facelift version early next year? Otherwise an MG4 is much more your style.
FWIW both ID.3 and Cupra Born are not well equipped at the same price point (purchase or lease) so beware their base models.

Maybe they're setting you up for early retirement? :)
I've been here for 20 years, so maybe!

I quite like the interior of the facelift 5 and the 4 looks quite good, not sure about the child in the back seat for the 4 though! Unfortunately the order went in before the facelift was announced so new cars will be the facelifts so I will be very jealous! I also can't swap the car even though they buy rather than lease the company cars. The ID.3 family they sent us with the full spec sheet wasn't short of stuff. Basically, I like the big shiny screen as I struggle to hit the right bit on the smaller screens when driving.

There's lots of room for child seats and long legs.

the screen looks really low in the dash

It is, and betrays the age of the design of the underlying ICE.

No, you'll have no trouble storing everything but leave your charge lead under the bonnet.

More controls in this version of the MG5 are on stalks or rear buttons, but you'll struggle to access the rest on sub-menus. Personally I just work around it. The large screen on the ID.3 is more a response to the lack of buttons, the hiding of key functions in sub-menus and the usual unreliable voice activation.

That's good to know, I know the main complaint of VAG drivers is going through 2 sub menus to change anything including air flow on the A/C. The voice control in my Seat is terrible, my 2013 Focus ST was way better.

I like my MG5 rather than love it, but it does the job very well. It's is missing features from my previous 2016 LEAF such as the ability to preheat- every cold morning I get jealous of my Wife's 2015 LEAF whilst defrosting the MG5. I suspect that you'll find similar but with some annoyance at your employer's policies.

Good point, how long does it take to heat up? Its a much larger space than a hatchback.

Does the boot have a roller shutter cover? In my younger days I had a seconf had Escort si estate and that had a leatherette cover over the load space so you could hide the rubbish in the boot.

Don't get me started on the policies, If I stayed with my allowance by 2025 I would have to have 4 star NCAP (one thing I am now concerned about now I'm a parent), less than 6 years old and emits less than 130g of CO and full electric by 2027. I'm going to see what they say about tinting the windows. Shade/Hide the small person in the back.

The window tinting process is completely reversible. It's just a film stuck to the inside of the windows.

I had a slight imperfection on one of mine and it took them less than 30 seconds to remove it and no more than five minutes to fit the replacement.

I have my 1 yr old in with rear facing seat every day loads of room. Regularly have my 2yr old niece in back to. Regularly have large buggy and my Labrador in boot. Personally prefer the look of an estate over a hatchback and see hatchbacks as a silly compromise. But that’s prob more to do with my outdoor/active upbringing.
Drive is less exciting than my previous cars but still makes good progress along country lanes.

Excellent, thanks for that Ayres, good to know. I wasn't expecting it to be as good as my old ST! I will be mostly B road blasting so good to know it isn't a lemon.

Just to note, the boot does fit golf clubs. I put both mine and my son’s in. I do take the drivers out of the bag though, but had to do this in my last bmw 5 estate. But if only my clubs, then I can leave it in the bag.
I find the heating and air on is pretty good.
