Bit of reassurance for the MG5

I've had my MG5 for 2 months now. I wanted to wait for the facelift but there was no indication when they would be available. I needed a bigger boot space so the ID3 wasn't suitable, nor the Kona or smaller Ioniq. I liked the Enyaq, ID4 and Ioniq5 but didn't want to pay almost £50k for a car with similar features to MG, as that would have added a couple of hundred quid to my car payment per month.

I wasn't a fan of the look of the 5, but it has grown on me. It's comfortable to drive (my previous car was a Kodiaq) and between solar and granny charging at work it costs me very little. I actually prefer the interior of the 5 to the ID3, with the exception of the infotainment screen which is small and looks naff but tbh it doesn't really register with me now. I can still follow sat nav and that's the only time I look at it.

Apologies if it sounds like I'm nit picking, I'm just curious. I thought the thrust of the question was, is the MG5 worse in key areas than the ID3, (one of them being boot space) as I thought you'd agreed to receive the ID3 (which was changed out last minute) so you would have received an ID3 had it not been switched ?
The brochure photos made the boot look not much bigger than a hatchback in depth, plus there are bits that make the boot useful that aren't in the photo like spaces by the wheel arches etc. I know the boot is bigger in capacity it was just questions about usability more than anything. My old focus was flush to the outside of the wheelarch but the Seat has cubbies that free up space and let me get the pushchair wheels in!

That's pleasing as I feel you are getting an unwarranted rough ride from a few.

I've old and retired (well, not SO old yet) and I've been through a few fun cars in my time. My last car was a PHEV (Vauxhall Ampera, quite rare), but I will admit this car is a pleasure to drive for it's quietness and speed away from the lights. I don't worry so much as some about squeezing every last mile out of a tankful so even though it may not be the prettiest car on the road I manage to make it fun to drive when I need to.

I hope you'll be happy with it!

Oh I won't be hypermiling! I think I'm temperamentally incapable of driving gently. Too much of my youth driving a white van around London. The meek may inherit the earth but they will never get out of the junction!

Mate got a Tesla just after I got my 5 and his has way more toys and it’s the quick one so silly fast but way less comfortable for commute.
And so far this year I have spent 380 hours in my car so I deff made the right choice.

Hope it's comfortable, my old A3 was terrible for giving me back pain. I had to stick a memory foam pillow behind me on journeys of more than half an hour!

I'm aware it is a first-world problem, but due to the company policy this car it will be mine for four years whether I like it or not, can't give it back can't swap it etc. and didn't have time to go see it in the flesh before deciding.

The VW had been signed up to for 2 months prior to the MG swap so I had run out of time to source a car I liked before my current lease expired (3 and a bit months by then) and as mentioned earlier the savings of the company car had been put towards my wife car not leaving me with much to change my mind with.

I also got like this when swapping to the Leon from the Focus, the test drive Leon had a smaller engine and was the bottom trim level and I had forgot the smaller details of how it felt and went also dealers only ever want to take you on big straight roads!

I might well love it or at least like it, but my priorities have always been tech and handling, not fussed by looks as I'm inside it, internal finishes other than the steering wheel don't get touched by me so I don't care. Driving is one of the few pleasures I get now I've got a child to look after (and only once I've dropped him off at his Grandparents of course!)

Oh FYI I only mention the VW 4 times in 8 posts as that car is my only reference point to EVs as I knew a Tesla would be out of my price range!

Yes, I agree it is their money and as I don't do much company mileage e.g. I haven't been out in 15 months for work, it is very much a perk. It is also a perk they need to attract and keep talent as they moved the office out into the sticks so it is inconvenient for all and we have no flexible working at all. A load of people are taking the allowance now as they live in flats or are unable to park near their houses to charge, as I mentioned only 2 charging points available at the office ATM. The ones in their 20s and 30s just don't like the car at all so are changing to allowances. We have a lot of Beemers, Mercs and Audis parked in our car park now and they ain't the managers cars! Also the managers got Merc EVs so not really trying to save that much money!

I don't want to admit practical is a requirement yet! I have to balance wanting to be environmental with being able to afford it. The company EV car seemed a good way to do that as when I looked at prices they just didn't stack up with the mileage I do and the premium on the purchase/lease. Since lockdown I've really noticed the traffic smell and really like the idea of emissions-free driving, just worried that the electricity and battery production is pushing the filth of my driving into someone else area.

Thanks, Padaung, I'm definitely not criticising anyone's opinion of the car they spent their hard earned cash on, horses for courses! It just that the brochure doesn't show some details and having not had time to drive out to the dealers this seemed the best way of finding out answers I haven't seen on other threads.
I didn't see a positive review until that video review from CarWow although aware they are trying to sell them too!

Sorry for the long post all!
One option is to take the car allowance and buy yourself a nearly ID3 at Motorpoint, who have a few to choose from. The way the market stands, you are unlikely to lose much money and there's a chance you will not be out of pocket at all. Even with the tax breaks of company cars, the current market makes personal ownership of EV's the cheapest way to enjoy an electric vehicle. This will give you time to assess the ID3 and if you like it, and use it whilst you wait for a brand new one if that's what you decide to do.

We have just taken delivery of our third MG EV and we are incredibly happy with them. We previously owned a gen1 ZS EV and currently have both an MG5 and now a Long Range ZS EV, with an MG4 on order. I bought the ZS to replace my Hyundai Ioniq EV, which in turn had replaced a BMW i3.

To balance that, I've seen articles in the past week suggesting that if electricity carries on going up and petrol coming down then the cost dynamics of ownership change quite dramatically. I think they are assuming 100% public charging though.

The screen was a big worry especially the position of it to looking out of the windscreen.
Regards the looks EVs are chunky due to the battery in the floor but the motoring press photographers still shoot them from low level and it definitely makes the 5 look more dowdy than seeing it in real life!

Unfortunately once I'm signed up I'm in it for the long haul. A quick check of motorpoint is showing id.3 monthly payments of nearly double my current car! Thats why it got blown out the running when I was going to lease a car.

Also the second I own a car it falls apart!

I will get a fuel card but according to zap map none of them are near me!

Funnily enough, said articles never mention the better drive of an EV, the much lower EV service costs, EVs' exemption from road tax, free chargers (there's still a fair few around) or home charging electricity rates.

It's almost as if they've got a hidden agenda....

Exactly- you have to live the electric dream to really get it. I just love the sound of ice engines - always have - but nowadays they make me smile - I just pity the poor character with his / her foot on the throttle revving with carefree abandon before suddenly realising that’s the sound of a pound as it evaporates. Meanwhile me and the five are at the next set of lights 😜😜
But I’ll still go to the Kinneil Estate to take in some of the fabulous sights and sounds of the wonderful Bo’ness Hill Climb tomorrow and Sunday

Thought I would just add..
Its not tesla fast, but it's also not slow.

Similar 0-60 as my 91' Lotus Elan Turbo (7 seconds) and dare I admit it better 50-70mph pickup than the 4.6L Mustang. Its not a B Road thrasher like the Lotus, but as said earlier. This is my commute car, not the weekend toy.

betrays the age of the design of the underlying ICE.
The MG5 has its roots in Saic's Roewe IE5. Now I may have got my knickers in a twist somewhere along the line but I think the lineage continues back, with roots in the Roewe 360, then back to the Roewe 350, which has roots in the Buick Excelle, which has roots in the Hyundai Lacetti and the Chevrolet Cruze. It might go back even further or with more intermediate stops, but you get the idea.

I can fit 3 kids (2 boosters and one rear/forward facing seat for the baby) on the back seat and the boot is big enough for a labradoodle in his crate and luggage for all of us. I don’t think you will struggle for space in an MG5

I have a Golf GTE and MG5 SR - done 17000 miles since Jan 2021. Love the car for everyday commute and for travelling with double metal dog crates in the massive boot! Handling is much improved with better all season tires up front (Verdestein Quatrac very much recommended). Other than that, the car is perfectly fine as a daily driver. The Golf GTE is way better to drive in tight turns due to the XDS+ e-diff, but acceleration and comfort is better in the MG5. Interior quality is on par, but the MG5 infotainment is borderline, but I use Apple car play anyway. Hope you enjoy the MG5, it’s an amazing practical daily with extremely cheap running cost.

Hi Tweed

Thought I'd throw my two pence in. Got mine two months ago, LR Exclusive in Silver, replacing a Passat Highline estate. I actually chose the MG5, mine is a company lease but it's my company so I only have myself to argue with! I was the same as you, not really convinced about the make and model so I opted for a 24 month lease.
I'm really impressed with it so far. It has a few quirks but all of them are new car quirks and not EV quirks. The lack of a light in the back might be annoying for you. The collision detection intervenes far too often (you can turn off the braking but not the beeping). I had polarised tints retro fitted for a couple of hundred quid which makes a massive difference.
Loads of people I spoke to scoffed at the idea of an MG but nearly all of them changed their tune once they went for a ride in it. "This is how much?" "It's dead comfy isn't it?" "God it's really quiet." "I suppose the good thing about having a front designed like a house brick is it's easy to park". "This nearly looks like real leather" Okay the last two not so complimentary but you get the idea. One of my friends has an ID3 and his assessment was "The boot is way bigger. It's not at all bad is it?" Faint praise indeed...

Good to know thanks johnklee, I'll be using Android Auto as an alternative to the on board stuff. I only use the radio when I loose internet in my current car the rest of it remains untouched.

If you only have a 24 month lease you'd better get your replacement ordered!

Does it have front sensors? Might ahve a few bumps parking outside the in-laws if I forget they aren't there!

I bet they are trying to do a Kia, get a name with decent cheap cars then jack the prices up!

It doesn't have front sensors, only rear. that's one of the quirks, radar cruise control and collision detection but no front sensors. But the front is really easy to place, much easier than my Passat was.

Cancel your order and let someone who will appreciate the MG5 buy it instead?
I love mine and it has been very good in many ways better than the Quattro, Bentley, Gti Golf, Lotus Esprit, Alfa Romeo GTV, Skoda Fabia and Octavia Scout. but then I have got older and realised motorised skate boards arn`t much fun and the badge is only a piece of plastic. (the MK1 Golf GTi was still the most fun).

I was never a fan of Rover or MG but I do understand that this is a totally different brand. MG has no dealers close to us so I wouldn't have considered it for a personal car, and checking the car out in the short time they gave us to make our minds up was not possible.
As for reviews they mostly say about cheap to buy and cheap running costs but they are things that I don't pay as it is a company car.
Of course there is a bit of badge envy, I'm 42 and was looking forward to a nice new modern looking car with loads of techy bits I liked, not the safety stuff, I never selected those on previous cars due to an inflated sense of my driving ability. The id.3 was also a car I had tried and liked and wanted. The MG5 is, well, a car my Grandad would liked and the tech inside it is noticeably older!
I have owned : - LEAF 1 30kw, LEAF 2 40 kw and now MG5

I also have driven in order - Tesla X, Kia Soul 1, Jag I-Pace, MG ZS 1, Polestar 2, VW ID3, Ford Mach E, Tesla Y

I have sat in & looked around most other EVs before buying the MG5.

The MG5 was not on my list, that was covered by ID3, Kia Niro. LEAF and a range of Stelantis options. I sat in every EV at Fully Charged, ruled out 75% on space or price so started test driving. Loved the look of the ID3 but it's software is awful, build quality poor / cheap and the ride was harsh. Had to stop before my son was sick in it!

Ignoring the glitz & badge, the MG5 was the most usable & comfortable of the lot, good quality, huge boot, great range & performance. I also love the Ford Mach E, the only other EV I have driven that impressed me. Yes it has a few quirks, lacks the style of the IONIQ, or EV6 but it is a lot better than the ID3 on any measure!

I was considering an estate, either the Leon or the Octavia in ICE.
I can tell you that in the Tour de France mountain passes I was overtaking these cars abound as they struggled and on motorways MG5 fully loaded I overtook these cars struggling even when empty on the hills.

Once you get used to the MG5 & 2 foot driving, everything is behind you!

Oh I won't be hypermiling! I think I'm temperamentally incapable of driving gently. Too much of my youth driving a white van around London. The meek may inherit the earth but they will never get out of the junction!

Hope it's comfortable, my old A3 was terrible for giving me back pain. I had to stick a memory foam pillow behind me on journeys of more than half an hour!
It's been the biggest boot I've had bar the Vectra and LWB Defender.

The MG5 does bring back my boy racer traits as a lad. Always first off the lights, you can pull out into 30 mph traffic with a gap 3 cars long easily (2 foot driving), you can spin the wheels on a 10% grade overtaking an Audi, well the highest speed I've spun the wheels in the dry was 70mph! High speeds on twisty roads is very stable, better than expected.

2 warnings though: -

1 - Speed = range loss
2 - You can easily spin the front wheels at almost any speed, so take care!

I drove my MG5 3500 miles on holiday across Europe, 625 miles in one day. You do need a towel on the drivers seat when it's hot & you are in thinner clothing but I always got out relaxed & comfy.

As I mentioned earlier its a company car. The company changed the only car available to an MG5 and I was given one night to decide if I wanted to stay on the scheme and take the car allowance. Due to child care issues I wasn't able to get to the nearest MG dealer on (it was a week night) so signed up for it.

I think the range will be sacrificed! I'd read about the wheel spin, is that due to less grippy tyres for better economy or massive torque from the electric motor?
