Is "ECO" Mode Misleading?

For the clueless it's a magic button that increases the range of the car rather than estimated range. Maybe of worth if you had really bad motor control in your right leg but if it was that bad then you probably shouldn't be driving.

Piffle.

I’ve seen a 10-15% improvement in m/kWh between Eco & Normal, same routes, same driving style.

I have not bothered with Eco on my TCLR. N and Kers 3 for everything now unless a BMW, Audi or anything else showing off as sporty needs to see an example of an EV take off at the lights. Sport is then a must - only done it a few times. 😁

edit. Should have said my soft style driving must be similar to E as I am getting 3.7 to 4-3 at the moment no doubt till temp cools off.

There is a noticeable difference in eco mode, in the power and the aircon. It doesnt magically increase the range of car, but it does make it more efficient, and get the most out of the battery. It's impossible to test unless you are in a factory, but I would put money on it giving my Gen 1 Exclusive and extra 10/15 miles, in good conditions.

It doesn't make it more efficient otherwise it would be on all the time because that would be worth something. It does make it harder to be inefficient but ultimately does nothing you can't do in normal mode.

The rated range is 273 miles.

You suggest you get 232 miles in NORMAL mode and 273 miles ECO mode with exactly the route and driving style ?

If you drive at 70mph on the Motorway you will get close to the same range no matter what "driving style" or "driving mode" you select.

ECO mode merely turns down the AC and flattens out throttle pedal response. It is no magic range generator.

To better understand your statement, would you be prepared to divulge your route and time taken to drive the route with average speed over the route in the two modes and the reported miles/kWh. Simple photos from the dashboard screen would show this detail.

Eco is a lie just keep it in normal and forget eco's there.
I totally agree. Only use eco if you are nearly running on empty. We have a Kia Soul EV and my son has an e-Up!. Driving them with zest gives us better economy than economy ever did. EVs are fantastic, so enjoy them.

I generally find forums work best when people give their own experiences, and not when they're used to shoot down other people with their opinions - as well as reading the posts before replying. I am sorry if you disagree and maybe I should have phrased it differently. So just to clarify...

I have found, over two and a half years of using my ZS EV and 20k odd miles (again reading the post that I have a gen1 version, so dont know about the gen 2), that using the car in eco mode, I manage to drive further than on normal mode. Maybe I should have phrased it differently - Eco mode make you as a driver drive more efficiently by using less throttle, thereby make the battery more efficient.

You cannot compare efficiency between the modes over two single drives on the same road - there are incalculable variables to take into account, temperature, road type, wind, weight, exact speed, driver tireness/mindset. So again, as I said in my post, they only way to do that would be in a factory, on a rolling bed with no driver!

It dosn't magically gain range, but it will get you closer to the max range of the car than normal mode will. That's all. For those who are trying to eek out miles on a long journey, it makes a difference. 10%, 5% even 2% might make the difference between getting there or not, if you are someone who likes to run the range close.

For those who aren't worrying about the range on their journey, it probably wont make a difference - and that's fine too.

Not sharing my actual route as I’m not going to doxx myself but happy to do any number of Eco v Normal runs.

Did you get out of the wrong side of bed yesterday, this is normally a reasonably polite forum and yet…

I just don't like people that spout utter nonsense on forums a d totally mislead people.

No need to show route, just show two photos of dashboard after each drive that shows the 10 to 15 percent improvement. The photos should show same distance covered and roughly same average speed.

If you search the forum you will see that I have posted up ample examples of the range of the MG ZS EV when driving in Normal mode and finding little difference when driv8ng in eco mode.

There is absolutely no way that driving in eco mode improves range by 10 to 15% - this is not an opinion, it is a fact.To suggest such is misleading to prospective buyers of any BEV. The OP was posting as a fact, not as an opinion. The OP stated that he got between 10 to 15% improvement in range by driving in eco mode compared to normal mode. This is complete and utter nonsense.

Sorry if you think I am being blunt, but the OP is misleading those new to BEVs and those thinking of purchasing one.

You may see a small improvement in range by driving in eco mode, but it will only be small.

“Utter nonsense”

Not trying to start an argument but get over yourself sweetheart.

You’re entitled to your opinion, as am I.

This is my last nearly 4500 miles of driving with almost entirely Normal mode. I do sometimes use Sport mode for the fun :)

For anyone to suggest that by driving in eco mode the MG ZS EV will achieve a 10 to 15% improvement is having a laugh and misleading new and potential BEV owners.

There is no way on this planet that a consumption rate of 4.3 to 4.5 miles per kWh is possible in eco mode compared to 3.9 miles per kWh is Normal mode.

I think he got out of the wrong side of bed today too...

As I have said above, you can't do a range test on real roads over two journeys, that's what is nonsense. There's too many variables. This is from my 2.5 years driving experience with this car.

Stating 'facts' like you do isnt helpful at all. Basically driving sensibly will help you get closer to the max range. Eco helps you do this.
