Evening folks.
Probably taking a trip to NI and possibly ROI in a few weeks. Looking at the charging options away from big towns and it's not great. Will very likely get the ESB app but I'm wary of the problems people seem to have in Scotland, where its advised if you have the time you also get the RFID card sent to you as the app is flakey.
Has anyone recently managed to get the RFID card sent to them? I signed up this morning but have had no email confirmation so can't currently log in and find anything out, I'm wondering if it's a manual thing or if you need an Irish address to sign up? I don't mind paying (although free is always good) it's just I don't want to be messing about.
Any tips on where to stay on the N coast, somewhere with a charger would be nice!
Simon

I live in Dublin, Ireland and I don't want to sound alarmist but I believe the charging situation in Northern Ireland is quite bad. I don't visit there very often so can't give you the in's and out's but you will get better advice on this discussion site... Electric Vehicles & Hybrids

As I understand it, a lot of the chargers are still free and people abuse them by parking their EV's there too long. And because the charging companies aren't making much money, there is no incentive to fix them when they break.

ROI is much much better but still needs a bit of planning outside of the main cities. Ecars and EasyGo.ie are the main chargers. A lot of the EasyGo chargers take credit cards. Use apps PlugShare and ABRP for local info and planning routes.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you'll get more accurate, local, information on that boards.ie website I mentioned above.

Good luck with your trip!

This is the sort of useful real world experience that appears to be missing from the conversation around electric vehicles. In the south east we are so well supported for charging although it's expensive. In Scotland they have a great network but I think the habit of leaving your car plugged in after its finished charging is quite prevalent there as well.
I may decide it's a better idea to take my ICE instead, still considering my position on that. I do have the advantage that it's just me so if I have to wait a few hours and read a book then it's not the end of the world!

Be brave, adventures aren't usually as bad as you think they will be...............hopefully.

This is an ongoing problem for many when you have an ICE and an EV. If we keep resorting to the ICE maybe think why did we bother with the EV. Not a personal dig at you @LordSiborg as this is a common thought for many,..... I'm a bit nervous so I'll play it safe. For those that are rid of the fossil burners altogether there are no second options, just have to get on with it. :)

I'm sure some folk do that everywhere. Haven't seen any evidence of it being more prevalent in Scotland than elsewhere though; I've used public chargers in England and the Netherlands, and I live in Scotland...
