MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

I read that at least 3 different cars in different parts of the country with same issue - and Bonny 865 confirmed not the over fill

I've just found a leak on my Trophy, just about to call the garage and see what they say.
Just interested did the say it was okay to drive it? It's about a 70 mile trip to the dealer

Hopefully, it’s not a serious issue. Let us know how you get on, Craig.
Is that Perth MG you’ll be taking it to?

Unfortunately, they did not have an Orange Trophy, so Macklin in Edinburgh
To be honest now less than impressed by their service team.
Told him it was an MG4, to be then asked if it was still under warranty!!, When I asked if it would be safe to drive, he said, no idea, you would be better calling MG assist and offered no other support.
To be fair to MG assist (AA) I've got a visit scheduled within 60 minutes, so I'll keep you updated. (Other than them having it listed as a 72 plate Metro :) Wife was less impressed at that point)

Still under warranty? What kind of question is that from a supposed MG dealer service team member?

Glad to hear someone is coming out to look at it though.

So, the Metro has been brought back from the dead. 😅

It might be worth switching over to the West End Motors group if possible. I’ve been with them for over five years and always received good service.

Hi here is another one with a light clear oil leaking from the back area it's a SR long range Scotland Ayrshire area I can see it on the black floor cover just waiting for a call from dealer

So, AA came and had a look, confirmed it was 'transmission oil' and that as he did not know how much had leaked, he said the car should not be driven the 80 miles or so to the Edinburgh dealer. It has not been recovered to MG Perth (my preference), unfortunately, they won't be able to look at it until next week, even then it will be a push.
Waiting to sort out the replacement car as I type

Oh deer it's not good our dealer is striping ours to find the leek as it's further up 😢

Fwiw I haven't seen anything suspicious since that initial spot after a longish journey on Monday. It's been sat on the drive for nearly a day following local (40mph max) running about. I think I'll give the dealer a shout anyway as I've got quite a long drive planned in a week. 😬

Hello,

I'm French, i have my mg4 since 30 september, and i have oil leak too on SE .
Yesterday my mg4 went to the garage with 155 miles . Today they have a response From MG : "Don't use the car" and nothing else, no more information.
So i'm very Happy :(. The garage said the oil was not overfill, the oil quantity was good.

I hope a solution will be found soon, in the meantime they give me a MG5 .

Sorry for my english ^^

Thank you for letting us know. Yes, I hope a solution is found soon.

Your English is excellent! Much better than my French.

On another forum they have id where oil may be coming from..... Hope this isn't a recall

Unfortunately that thread doesn't identify the source. The undertrays will need to be removed to do that.

Hi Alb I see at #25 you said you changed the name on the thread, I think it should be called simply Oil Leaks or Fluids leaks on MG4, as nobody has any idea where this leakage is coming from,a leak that needs to be sorted by MG ASAP, could be gearbox , could be battery coolant could be something else ,and owners who say to dealers there a reduction gearbox oil leak might get the answer well we have check the gearbox and it’s fine and not bother looking elsewhere because they where told it’s a gearbox leak , I hope you understand where I’m coming from.

This does hinge on the accuracy of multiple statements saying that it is oil. Perhaps someone who has experienced this can be definitive on this detail? Gearbox oil is pretty distinctive.

Well, after reading this thread I thought I had better stick my head under the back of our one week old MG4 SE LR and check. Sadly there is a definite leak, a few drops on the ground, evidence of seeping out of the undertray and being 'blown' rearward across the bottom of the car. My best guess 'finger test' is that it is thin oil rather than coolant.
Top marks to our dealer though. Following a phone call, car immediately booked in for inspection tomorrow am. Dropped it off tonight and home with a MG5 loan car.
Fingers crossed it is nothing too serious and an easy fix....
