Dead car / flat 12 volt battery šŸ˜°

Hi All

I too have a USB Lithium jump pack (This one: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B09KNBSPG3). It works brilliantly on my daughters 1100 Picanto but never yet tried in on the MG5 LR.... Has anyone actually used it on the MG5 to 'Jump Start' it in the event of need.. In other words I guess I'm asking are we sure this will actually work on an EV in the event of need or does the EV actually need the voltage to be at a certain level, rather than just providing power to turn a start motor and make a spark?

Cheers all - Charles

Unless the 12 volt battery is completely flat, then when connecting the jump pack to the battery to the car, it will be ready to boot the car almost straight away.
On an ICE car, the pack needs enough power to put enough energy into the battery first, then to turn the massive drain of the starter motor, then the ICE.
A jumper pack will therefore have plenty of capacity to start a much larger number of EVā€™s then ICE cars.
Once the battery has hit above 12 volts, it will pretty much provide enough energy to boot up the EV.

Hi Charles- Iā€™ve not used my jump starter on the 5 LR since I bought it. The car was totally dead and wouldnā€™t even open the doors. I called the MG Assist - AA and the guy jump started it with his unit in seconds. That was when I bought my unit.
As thereā€™s only a bit of switching to do on the EV itā€™s so much easier to start them than churn over against the compression and gears and oil in a dinosaur powered machine. I think youā€™d get loads of EVā€™s started as opposed to two or three engine starts.
Have fun - oh and keep the jump starter handy at the front of the car near the driverā€™s door so itā€™s easy to reach it.

Aye, Iā€™ve drilled and filed the 10 mm spanner to save weight but still working on the shovel šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

The scary twilight charger ( A cautionary tale )

A driver with an unlit car

When all around was gloom

The senses were too sharp by far

Foreboding thoughts of doom

In a state of agitation

In this lonely highland Glen

This guy caused consternation

By shouting ā€œgiveā€™s your tenā€

Well I had to have some power

From this only plug for miles

So I asked at that late hour

If two fives would make him smile

At that he went quite funny

In a jovial sort of manner

ā€œIā€™ve no interest in your money

Just lendā€™s your ten mil spanner !ā€

Very nice personal pressy and I sincerely hope you never need it šŸ¤£
My unit rests under the driverā€™s seat. I did have it in a side pocket in the boot but thatā€™s the least handy place I reckon. When my 12 volt battery was too low powered to even open the doors I had to flick off the chrome cap on the door handle. This revealed the keyhole for the ā€œflicknifeā€ key blade to unlock the door.
Then I would have had to reveal exactly how unfit Iā€™ve become. Climbing over the seats and faffing about opening the luggage cover would have produced a comedy show of epic nonsenseness.
Additionally, Iā€™ve now had my unit for a couple of months or so. I plugged it in before our three day trip recently, and found that it took half an hour or so to top it up fully. So Iā€™ll now try to plug it in two or three times a year (calendar suitably marked up).
It seems these units can crank up even a diesel a few times and, as you say, EVā€™s only need a relatively tiny bit of power to get thinks going.
And the Panda should be fine šŸ¼

Yeah - OK I have had this jump starter unit under the passenger seat since buying it and forgot all about it until today.
So folks - TIMELY REMINDER -
Check that if you carry one of these units - check itā€™s fully charged and ready for winter - you never know šŸ„¶.
This one was only ten minutes away from fully topped up šŸ‘ŒšŸ‘Œ

Personally Iā€™d go for it, but I bought a NoCo booster HD - bigger and more expensive but does the job.

The good thing about this is the battery chemistry - LiFePO4 pretty good for the price.
