Hi all,

I was emailing ev.energy over the last couple of days to try and get smart charging working properly with my Rolec charger.

As many may know, there is an issue at the moment where Rolec chargers don't work properly if you want delayed/smart charging. So at the moment there is a workaround to trickle charge the car at 1kWh as soon as it's plugged in.
Originally this was (partly?) due to an issue with the car, but MG have since updated the car for this (see Mike's video for more details).

Anyway, a localish MG dealer thinks I have this update installed, so I contacted ev.energy to remove the trickle charge, which they did that same day.
And with an overnight test last night I can confirm that it didn't work, and the car didn't charge at all.

Going back to ev.energy today, they came back with this:
There is a bug in our system which is causing charging to start right away. This will cause your car will charge at the beginning of the session and then stop, with the intention of charging later in the evening to coincide with your off-peak period. However, your MG will fall asleep within 10 minutes of the first section of charging finishing, preventing your car from charging during your off-peak period as normal.

Until we've fixed this bug, I would suggest that I re-enable trickle charging for the time being. Once the bug is fixed we can go back to having trickle charging disabled.
I went back with the obvious question; here's the reply:
It should be in the next couple of days. We will update you once it's live.

So overall it sounds promising. Hopefully soon we'll all be able to actually use our Rolec chargers as intended!

Hopefully this is useful information for someone :)

That's exactly what happens with mine, It starts its charge, stops the charge then doesn't wake back up.
As an interim solution (rather than just calling EV energy again and messing around) I've just set the charger to dumb mode and just charge on the weekends when the electricity is cheaper for me anyway.
I would be really interested once you hear that they've released a potential fix as I can try it out also :)

Steve

That's interesting as it appears to be exactly the same for the MG 5. ev.energy said the same to me, which I have posted in the MG 5 section.

ev.energy have since fixed the issues their end and in the Rolec charger and say that everything should work, if the car has the relevant update.

However it doesn't work for me, so I guess I'm missing an update for my car...

It doesn’t work for me either. They have said the same to me. They have deployed the latest update to the app and/or charger.

It only works if they enable trickle charge mode. Without trickle mode, it will only charge when first plugged in. When it shuts down, with the intention of scheduling an overnight charge, it does not have the ability to wake the car later on.

That is disappointing.

I should point out that I have the MG 5, not the ZS.

I noticed there was an update for their app on iOS yesterday.
My android app updated yesterday. No idea what has changed as not on an EV or Economy 7 type tariff so never use it..

I had this problem as well and after the ev.energy update it started working OK again. On Friday I had the latest BMS update installed and now I have charging while unlocked and delayed charging but the smart charging with the Rolec charger has gone again. It's like the BMS update has wiped out the update for Rolec chargers that I had done several months ago. Anyone else come across this? Looks like I'll have to go back to the dealer again.....

Another update on iOS for the ev.energey app today - "small performance improvements and bug fixes" apparently.
