I charge my new 3 week old Mg4 SR to max on my home charge point and each time the max miles seem to reduce, at first showed 228 but now shows max mile 177 down from 188 last time I charged, any advice/info would be appreciated.

Remember that estimated range (mileage) is only as good as your last journey, temperature and a few other factors so it will vary accordingly

Ok thanks for reply, I’ve only done a few short journeys in cold/wet and at night and only top up battery from say 70% so makes sense, will keep an eye on it, guess it will improve in summer/longer trips during day 👍

Cold weather certainly doesn't help miles per kw efficiency, especially using heating, demisting etc. Hey its all a learning process when you get an ev and how to get more miles per kw will come to you in time.

i would be very surprised if anyone can get close to the claimed range of 218 miles.
I do a 9 mile journey to work with a mixture of speed limits and im getting about 120-130 mile range no matter how i drive.
Im very interested to see what it will be like in warmer weather but even then i doubt anyone would get close unless they drive at 20mph without using the lights, heater or the stereo

This was one of the factors behind why we went for the LR. While SR would have worked for us for most of the year, we wanted a "4 hour range" year round, which on the roads where we are is 180-200 miles. The SR would have been a pain in winter.

I can live with the range for 95% of my driving as i rarely do long drives, but id be wary about going on a long road trip as im sure it would require stopping every couple of hours for a charge.
I just wish the dealers were a lot more honest with the claimed range, they should also state the real world range at different times of the year, as i can see this really catching some people out.

This is one where you can't blame the dealers - blame lies squarely with the manufacturers.

Dealers can only use official figures so they're not being dishonest, and real world is all dependant on the driver and the journeys they undertake.

MG MG4 EV Standard Range

Has some "real world" figures between best case and worst case when driving "normally" but again define normal.

In our MG ZS EV I can manage 4.0mi/kWh where as the missus gets 3.7mi/kWh for the same journey, and i imagine it'll be the same in the MG4 when we collect this next month

Of course, but im certain it will be near impossible to get anywhere close to the claimed range of any EV.
I had an ID4 for a day to go to Birmingham, it was supposed to be able to do over 300 miles but it was struggling to get 200, it was however getting much better miles per kwh than my car with an average of 4.2

Anyone who's owned an EV for a while will read a post like that and be completely unperturbed by it.

Anyone who's never owned an EV and is looking to buy a MG4 will read a post like that and be extremely alarmed.

Fun subject EV range....

Exactly. If you drive just as you would in an ICE car you will struggle for range. Biggest things to increase range are to drive more slowly at speed (65mph or less on motorways) and minimise use of the heater.

Most people have never owned one, im on my first and im not impressed with how much range is lost by simply using the lights, a little heat and the stereo.

The only saving grace is that i get free charging at my workplace, so i dont mind if i need to charge twice a week. But without this i think id be swaying towards a hybrid

I do quite like the range guide on MG's website. They just need to add a <5 degrees, or Cold weather option. That would be very useful I think.

Please remember a lot of the ancillaries run off the 12v battery and have minimum impact on range. Lights, infotainment, seat heating, steering wheel heating to name some. The biggest culprits re range are cold weather, hvac heating, demisting windscreen, preheat batteries, speed, terrain and right foot in a divers boot 👢

On our ZS EV MK1 closest we've gotten to the 163mile range is 156mi with very conscious use of regen and route planning in summer.

I dont thrash mine or drive it hard and i will always drive to the speed limit because absolutely refuse to crawl around at a snails pace like im a geriatric coffin dodger out for a Sunday drive

You'll be amazed how much difference doing:

27mph in a 30
35mph in a 40
45mph in a 50
55mph in a 60
65mph in a 70

You don't get there any slower really, bit like when you see the numpties overtake people on country lanes on blind bends and then catch them up a mile down the road.

Yup aero drag increases as the square of speed - so double the speed = 4x the aero drag.

If I understand the maths correctly (and it's early and I'm tired!) then the increase in power required to go at 60 compared to 70mph is 36%, but the time reduction is 16%

being forced to drive under the speed limit to eek out a few extra miles seems like a step backwards to me.

Maybe this will be my first and last EV because they clearly have not been engineered for the real world.
