MG4 Range

Turning HVAC off and putting the car in eco mode will make the range display higher, but bottom line is this is a seasonal effect. Expect your range to be typically 25-30% less in winter than in summer.

Thanks. Yeah I noticed that my 2.8KWh average on my MG4 atm. Will check the HVAC as well.
Thanks

There seems to be a massive influx of people buying EVs on the basis that “it’ll definitely do 280 miles 365 days a year” and they drive it like their old ICE car and only get 100 miles out of the battery. I wish dealers were more open with this kind of thing and said it depends on weather, driving style, heating etc rather than just selling these cars Willy nilly.

Yeah that's true.

It just comes down to inexperience and it doesn't take long to figure it out. I'm sure if SoKo comes back and reads this thread again in a few weeks/months time he'll feel very different about it.

One important thing to understand is that the battery packs themselves are very consistent i.e. for the same ambient temperature, weather conditions, speed driven, HVAC settings etc you'll get the same result each time but your GoM can be showing wildly different range estimates based on all sorts of variables. Once you've figured that out you can relax and rely on your previous experience to be confident about how far your car will take you before you need to recharge.

For example, please feel free to add anything you feel I may has missed without over complicating any explanation and then I may create a new thread and hang it on hints and tips

Range Displayed

The range displayed is not wholly based on the battery capacity and the mileage advertised.

An algorithm within the car looks at existing battery capacity and driving history, examining previous journeys miles per kw for example and derives an estimate of what range may be available.

Speed, cabin heating, terrain, regen use, weather conditions, to name some of the factors involved, will have an impact on miles per kw and therefore it is purely an estimate, as was the range when you collected your vehicle.

The range available will not take into consideration the type of journey you may have planned based on the above factors and therefore regard it as just an estimate.

Most people who aren’t interested in EVs per se are going to assume they work the same as the cars they know, so if they are told the range is X, they won’t know it is temperature/season dependent.

We need a mass informational campaign and it clearly cannot be left to the manufacturers.

Frankly everything about EVs is far too complicated for the average person. It will have to be simplified for mass adoption.

I agree, and I think it's great that people are asking and that information is given in all the replies.
One question I would ask is is it too complicated, a change to the norm and do people worry to much about some elements of it.
The estimated range is just that and hence why referred to as a GoM, it's impacted by many of the factors people have stated already.
My previous, ICE, car had quite variable range mainly depending on how heavy my foot was on the loud and stop pedals. This for sure varied by over 20%, or more on the few track days I did.

When it gots close to zero I would go and fill up.Whats really good, as I have a home charger is that it it's lower.than I need.i.can just plug it in and don't have to search for a petrol station with a reasonable price 🙂.

Hi

I’m only getting 200 miles range on my mg4 trophy in a full charge it seems to be getting less on every charge .. anyone else having this problem?

Probably mostly down to the outside temperature dropping and the driving conditions.
As Oberoi states have a look at the MG4 Range on this forum.

I thought so but my zs ev I had before the mg4 only dropped a little over the winter so was getting a little concerned with the fact it’s significantly dropping down.. thank you for your input 👍
