MG4 Range

Excuse the stereotype comment

Perhaps you got the MG4 special version for Aberdonians and Yorkshireman...doesn't want to give away full range, speed and miles per kw without a large lump of reluctance...

You should see the size of the range I caught the other day… was massive… but then it got away…. 🤣😂🤣

What about battery preheating? Has anyone been trying that?
Haven't needed to try often enough for a full picture but i tried it for 20 odd minutes last week and noticed the miles per kwh was definitely better from the off but it does obvs use battery before you get moving. My presumption is when on some mornings i make a short dash to station of 1-2 miles and get 2 miles per kwh its probably not worth me worrying too much about preheating but over a longer trip the benefits start to kick in. Still learning though!

It’s maybe that us Scots and Yorkshiremen have things called ‘hills’, not the vast swathes of flatness that is Shroplinchampshire or whatever they’re called.

I don’t know why but I cannot get anywhere near the figures from my wife’s Mg4SR that this chap is getting.i will edit when I return back home in a couple of days.

Just thought to open up this thread to discuss the range of MG4 cars.
Anyone noticed that MG4 range is significantly down. I have MG4 Trophy and its only showing 220miles after 100% charge. Anyone experiencing similar issue?

If anyone know settings which will increase the range, please reply.

Many Thanks
I am driving my MG4 trophy in NORMAL mode, with Strong regen, and am averaging about 3.2 miles/kw. My rule of thumb is that I will get 2 miles for each 1% of battery level.

So if battery level is 50%, this will give me 100 miles range. On that basis, your 220 range is quite good. You could try the ECO driving mode if you want to improve things, but it won't be very exciting. . .

It would be truly interesting to know how much is the efficiency difference between a Trophy and the LR in this cold weather thanks to the heat pump.

I'm really curious as, so far, looks like there is no advantage on having this extra (which is not supposed to be reflected on the WLTP) in the car... I was expecting some low temp at which the Trophy would surpass the other trims efficiency thanks to the heated seats and the pump.

I've just got back from a trip out, 20 miles each way. Outbound we were going 75-80 mph to try to stay in convoy with a fellow orange trophy we joined behind, arrived with 2.8 miles/kWh. On the return I set the ACC behind a lorry doing 50mph and got 4.2 mi/kWh.

Not bad considering I had the cabin toasty and it was 0C outside.

I’m getting conflicting and baffling range readouts in my car today.
It’s saying I’m getting 2mpkwh, not budging from that with a reset.
Yet the ‘miles to empty’ is saying nearly 190 miles with 90% charge, in an SE SR! o_O
Clearly the latter is incorrect.

Yep. They both seem to have a lower limit. It definitely doesn't show anything below 2 mi/kWh.

Seriously, can anyone explain this?
It’s easily -1c or lower here right now and and I’ve not got close to this level of range even in much nicer weather (it’s an SE SR)
What mpkwh would it even take to reach 171 miles range from 84% battery??
The driver display is saying I’m getting 2mpkwh.

4 mpkWh would give 171 miles range from 84% battery.

0.84 x 50.8 = 42.672 kWh
171 / 42.672 = 4.007 miles per kWh

Cheers
So begs the question….which is correct?
The GOM that says 171 miles from 84%, or the driver display that won’t budge from 2mpkwh….

It's like the leaf GOM all over again. That was always wildly optimistic. You'll eventually learn how far the car will go for a given percent in different conditions. You can also calculate it yourself using a similar method to what siteguru used.

The formula is: 50.8*(battery%/100) * expected mi/kWh

Actually due to the fortunate value of 50kWh capacity there is an easier way to do it.

Take the battery percentage and halve it then multiply it by the expected mi/kWh for your journey.

So at 70mph you should expect 3 mi/kWh. If you have 60% left you could go 30*3= 90 miles

The Driver display - that's what you are getting at that time* for whatever reason.

Agreed. You rarely get the promised range in the LEAF.

You can expect whatever figure you like, but in the MG4 it seems not to deliver it once you have losses from heating etc, particularly on short journeys. * The biggest loss from heating is warming the car up at the start of the journey so the average should improve over the journey.

My experience was that 150 miles would be possible to 0% at 70 without heating in ~10C wet weather. But who goes to 0% except in emergencies? So in reality you got closer to 120 miles unless you slowed down.

This is where experience is key. It was only an example. Once we've all had the cars for a few months we'll all have a better idea about what to expect mi/kWh wise for a given journey.

I do agree that the consumption on short journeys is shockingly bad. My trophy is currently doing about 100 miles per charge but since I do about 6 miles per day it doesn't really matter, I just charge it when it needs it.
