Public car park near work specifically lists 'electric vehicle parking, whilst charging' with a fine for occupying the space without charging. It also states this also includes not moving within 20 minutes of a completed charge.

This was a busy McDonald’s just off the A1 all chargers where in use I just put mine on charge and another EV drove past looking for a charger this short of thing really boils my piss the car park was busy but plenty spaces just 30 yards up the road the lazy git was probably sat in McDonald’s I just hope the next time they need a change some other clown 🤡 is doing the same I can only see this happening more and more with the uptake of EVs

They obviously had no intention of trying to charge parking in the wrong way around for their car. Entitled eejits.

That has to be the way forwards, but I bet it's not enforced.

Agreed, as the number of EV cars increases the inconsiderate element seem to be growing in even greater proportion.

I did this once in a gridserve bay but only because the charge session failed to start then the car got stuck in a fault state and I couldn't move it. (went to use the facilities before getting stuck waiting for breakdown, when I came back the fault had cleared)

Totally understandable and unavoidable !.
Circumstances outside of your control.

Anybody used this app to "notify" another EV user that the charger they are "blocking/using" has actually finished (assuming it started) and that they really ought to move their car? If so, did it "work" and the owner came and moved his/her car?

I'm asking this out of genuine curiosity. I have the app but have, so far, never needed to use it as all but one of my charging sessions since first getting the car have been at home. The one non-home use was at a charger which was, miraculously perhaps, available and working!

It’s very frustrating. Number plate recognition cameras on all bays and automatic fines would stop it.
It might be used to penalise ICE vehicles that occupy a charging bay but doubt it would be sophisticated enough to deal with EVs simply not charging as in this case.

Perhaps, but number plate recognition cameras can stamp the date and exact time that the car entered the charging bay, along with if the car is an EV or not, if linked with the charger it could also tell when a charge started and ended.
so, for example a car enters the bay and plate is recognised as an EV and recorded, no charge detected after say 10mins grace period - parked without charging excess charges start to incur.
The exact process would need to be worked through but it shouldn’t be too difficult to implement.

Hi all, yeh very annoying for sure when this type of thing happens and I have seen it and been a victim of it a couple of times myself and more and more it is happening as stated drivers thinking because they or in a BEv or a PHEV they have the right to use that space as a parking space and don’t even bother to plug in and it’s not on.

My lad Tesla owner told me some time that his car which he can use on the super charger network for free if when is car is charged he doesn’t remove it from the charge point within a preset time I think 5or10 minutes after he receives a text message to tell the charge is done he then incurs charges for every minute he goes over which is I suppose is one of the reasons the Tesla network works so well.

I believe in some parts of Scotland they came up with a limit to the time a car can be plugged into some chargers and if you go over that time you can’t unplug the vehicle until you speak to a control centre and pay a fee for them to unlock the cable not sure if that’s true but sounds feasible to me .

Porbably a better idea would be to sky rocket the charges after you have been plugged in for a certain length of time that could also be applied to a contactless machines as I said not sure if that’s true but could well be a way foreword IMHO I would say that most vehicles today can charge up enough in 45 minutes or so.

Now the above could work I think especially on rapid charges of 50kws or more.
Now l know for sure they are lots of EV owners who have no way to charge at home or at work and do often use a 7 kw charger overnight and something would need to be put into place to help them that’s for sure but the above would make people return to and remove there vehicles from the rapids and free them up for others to use.

Another way could be to charge by the minute instead of the KW that does happen today in some countries I believe.
Les.

Many existing chargers have excess charges that apply after charging has ended if the car is not unplugged.

But excess charges can only apply if the car has plugged in and a charge has been initiated.

There are many ways in which a charge point can be abused (and not even any consensus as to what is acceptable, and what is abuse). I don't see one simple, cost-effective answer to tackle the problem.

I despair when EV owners, who should know better, are prepared to block a charger or use it in a sub-optimal way without consideration for others.

It's the same principle as to why average Joe got to get as cose as possible to the enterence to a Tesco, no matter how sardine canned in. And the same reason why many people don't return trolleys to the bay, or double yellow line park outside of shops. No wonder the NHS is stuffed. Laziness. Don't bet on stuff like this being resolved in any sort of due course.

Yes, it just takes a bit of thought and consideration for others. Some find that hard to do.
