Must of been mentioned before somewhere on here but haven't come across it, picked up new mg5 2 days ago, so very new, traded in our face-lift mg6 sad to see it go but after 6years of ownership it was time to let go, anyway my question is what is the purpose of the black plastic strip on the tailgate? Kind of spoils the look of an otherwise attractive rear end. Can't fault the car as yet but haven't done much mileage as yet.Thanks.

Comes from the factory with 4 holes to secure Chinese numberplate. Black strip covers 2 holes and provides a support to the numberplate with two fixings at the top. Have been a few suggestions to replace with a larger plate
Rear 2number plate option

Just noticed that on mine. Its not on any of the press images though.

It needs to come off!

Has anyone talked to their dealer about it?

You can get a sticker to put on it that says '100% electric'

Also a very long thread about this here

Thanks to all the advice on here I decided to get some slightly deeper plates for the back.

I bought my wife some private plates for Christmas (who says romance is dead!) and decided to sort out the back plate situation.

I ordered 140mm deep plates for the rear. Took off the black bar, cleaned the sticky pads up. I've moved the plates about 5mm to the left so it doesn't foul the MG badge (I can't tell by looking at it). And voila...

I think it looks pretty good

The only down side is that I couldn't get a green EV flash with the deeper 140mm plate on the web page. If you wanted that it might be worth emailing them...

Anyway, here's a picture and the sizes I ordered

Forgive the black lower screws, I need to get some yellow ones.

Looks great. You know that although you blocked out part if your reg on the car picture it still shows on the 'custom number plates' picture.

Not dissimilar to mine, a few posts down this page My Solution for Rear Number Plate on MG5 especially in that (I understand) it is illegal as it doesn't carry the name of the maker. :)

I previously wondered out loud why people block out parts of their number plate but still not clear why. It's not as though it isn't available publicly after all...

In reality, not something ever likely to be noticed (unlike the illegal spacing of course)!

It's on the checklist of things for the MoT to check, but given that they often miss illegal spacing then you are probably right.

Same solution as me, I have the green flash but I think I will get new plates without at some time. Our plate is dated 5* (not because it's an MG5) and it somehow suits the car.

Do you think mine is illegal? I hadn't thought of that.

It's as above - it is technically illegal but it will never be spotted. If the Police have a downer on you for some reason they might give you a "producer" where you have to fit a legal one within 14 days.

Looks very nice by the way! (y)

It's interesting to see a remedy to the black bar.
I couldn't decide what to do so I removed the black bar painted the black screws silver to match my car and just put the screws back. It's not a perfect solution but for the time being it looks better than the black bar.

That's what I did originally before I changed the plates to a larger size, but I obviously just used blue screws. :)
