MG ZS EV
Hi
Has anyone had problems with their V2L discharging switching off on a ZS EV 2022?
I have a type 2 plug with a 470 ohm resistor fitted between PE & PP, it was used to power individual items such as washing machine or tumble dryer (not at the same time!), the resistor still shows 470 ohms (I have replaced the resistor but still no good!).
The car recognises the discharge cable, when I press the discharge button, car shows discharging (relays switch) started but within 5 seconds car says a charge cable is connected and the discharge cable is not connected! There does not appear to be any loose connections (I am an electronic engineer so not a total novice!).

Thanks in advance

Apparently the official vehicle to load cable is 2k ohm some more info

Hi, I have been looking for an official one since a third-party one I bought didn't work.

Looked again just now and found this, wondering if official or not. Quite pricey.

Yes that's the official one. I got one and it works. Though with a ZS EV you have to keep the car switched on (in ready mode despite what the manual says) for it to work (discharge). With the MG4 (and possibly the new MG5) the car does not have to be switched on (ready mode). When I tested it using a meile vacuum to clean up the carpet in the car, it works for a bit if you switch it off. I tested the vacuum with it in ready mode. Then turned off the vacuum. Them turned off ready mode. Then switched the vacuum on. It worked when I did it straight away. When I switched the vacuum off and tried again after ten minutes, it would not work. I have not tried keeping on something permanently for 10 minutes usin eg a small lamp to see if it switches off. From some comments I have read regarding the MG4 it does not switch off.

Looks like the official one to me.

If the 470 ohm resistor no longer works then MG must've pushed out an update. The 2k resistor should limit the output to 16 amps, as I understand it, whereas the 470 ohm resistor enables a full 7 kw to be output.

Thanks for the info N2STY, I didn't have a 2k ohm resistor handy so I tried 4 x 470 ohm resistors in series (total 1880 ohms), it didn't work - same symptoms. For info there is nothing connected to CP not even a floating wire.
Aussi55, Here is the link to the cable I got from Ebay, it worked for 6 weeks!

Could there have been a software update sent to the car or can that only be done in a MG garage?

I very much doubt that there is an update as I think it's only the infotainment that can have an over the air update everything else would have to be by the dealer.

I assume that the car's battery is charged higher than the limit set by the discharge screen? That's the only reason I can think of for it not to work.

Yes, the limit is set to 20% and the battery is well above that.

What is the Miele cleaner rated at ?.
Is it close to the 2.2 Max discharge ratting suggested by MG when using the V2L cable ?.
Some of the more powerful ( older type ) vacuums are rated close to this limit.
I have a V2L cable made by EVcables.co.uk
This cable was one of the first professionally built cables built and made available to the public.
It was designed made and tested in conjunction with one of the first customers of the MG ZS EV Gen 2 facelift model, when first released to the market in 2022.
Here is some of the facts and figures of their lead taken from their web site.

A SIMPLE ADAPTER POWER SOURCE (MG ONLY)

Turn your MG ZS (2022), MG 5 (Facelifted 2023), MG4 (2022) and MG Marvel R into a mobile power source for home appliances with our (V2L) Vehicle to Load (sometimes known as Vehicle to Device (V2D)) EV cables.

Simply plug into your Type 2 charge port and select the discharge option on your cars infotainment system display

Connect up to 2.5kW of load (Depending on car model)

Power camping equipment in the wilderness!

Vehicle to load cables should not be connected to any other electrical system as there is no voltage or phase synchronisation. Failing to adhere to this will void your vehicle warranty and has the potential to cause serious damage to both the connected system and your vehicle

  • * What is IP44 Rating?
  • The IP44 (Ingress Protection Rating) means our cables will operate in dusty conditions, and will resist splashes of water while mated. However, the charging process is not fully water sealed and the cables should not be submerged in water or operated in the rain.
    Cable Information
    16A 3G2.5mm2+2*0.5mm2 EV Wire (AC) / 15mm Diameter
    Charging Cable Safety
    • The cable should be kept out of puddles but can be kept outside.
    • Please remember to use the rubber cover to keep moisture from the connector when not in use. The vehicle will not charge if it senses moisture.
    • Moisture is the most common issue experienced and will lead to corrosion of the pins which are not covered by our warranty.
Why can't we charge in the rain?
Water can still get into the plug and charging socket during the inserting and removing of the plug from the car. In fact, as soon as you open the charge port or unplug your car, the rain will get onto the pins and stay there until the next time you charge

My ZS went in for updates recently and they said it was already up to date (from the beginning of June). I was using V2L with a 470ohm resistor 2 days ago without any issues (heat pump tumble dryer for 4 hours), although the car has to be in ready mode and unlocked or it will turn off.

Here is a couple of good short video's showing how the EVcables V2L cable preforms when boiling a fast boil electric kettle.
In the first video, it displays that a 3 Kw kettle can boil the kettle from the discharge facility.
Then in the second video, how displays the different current draw when first used on a domestic three pin socket outlet and then how the car reduces the energy powered via the V2L cable discharge function, directly from the car.
You can see that the car throttles back on the energy provided to the kettle via the V2L cable over the domestic supply from the house.
The V2L function boils the kettle with no problem, it just takes slightly longer to hit boiling point.

No, you can't throttle a kettle's power consumption like you can an EV's On Board Charger. It's just that the V2L is set to 220 V, whereas power outlets in the UK are nominally 230 V, but like most outlets in Australia, are actually closer to 240 V. Power in resistive loads like kettles is proportional to the square of the voltage, so you'd expect the kettle to draw (220/240)² x 2965 = 2491 W. We see 2469 W, pretty close.

I don't believe it's throttling the voltage to keep the power limit close to the rated limit, I believe it's just using the 220 V standard.

Hi,

I tried that cable and it just didn't work. The vendor did give me a refund.

I did read a caveat from EV Cables that on some MG4 and later cars they needed to connect CP to PE, as well, and it solved the problem.

I haven’t seen any more recent info on what effect using a 2k Ohm resistor makes.

Hello,

When V2L shut off after a few seconds, it is not necessarily an overload but it can be a current fault.
Please try with another device.

When using the discharge function on my ZS EV it has to be in the run mode, engine off, I.e. press the start button twice without pressing the brake pedal. This means you cannot lock the car. If you use the Accessories mode or Off so you can lock the car, the discharge stops after a couple of minutes. Mine is the long range SE. My son has the long range trophy version and his doesn't switch off in accessory mode and can be locked. The disadvantage of this is the 12v battery discharges quite quickly so can only be used for a short time.

MG4 can use V2L function with out the car in READY mode and with the doors locked.
ZS EV facelift - No, it has to be in READY mode or you run the real risk of flattening the 12 volt battery.
There was a strong rumour that there was a software update available for the ZS EV face lift to address this problem, but this can NOT be confirmed as correct unfortunately.

My ZS EV Trophy (delivered December 2021) can do V2L in ready mode or stop mode. In ready mode, the 12V battery is charged, but the DRLs are on and the car cannot be locked. In stop mode, the DRLs are off and the car can be locked, but the 12V battery isn't charged and will go flat after a few hours.
I recently had my 1 year service (by WLMG Ruislip) and no software updates were needed (or so they told me). I was concerned I'd lose the ability to have V2L in stop mode, but it seems not.
I have an official MG V2L cable (on loan) which has a 2k resistor in it. It seems either 2k or 470 ohms works to tell the car it's a discharge cable.
