MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

Please keep bickering. We're almost at two thousand posts. 😂
I wouldn't really have called it bickering, the world would be a very boring place if we all thought and said the same things.

The unfortunate thing with the oil leak rumbling on for over 3 months now though is that it unfortunately brings new examples of short comings in how customers are dealt with when they report it, this obviously in turn sparks more comments and debate when it is posted in here.
I personally don't think the forum can suddenly say no more negative posts or rants from people posting poor experiences with dealers, the issues experienced by the early owners in October are very similar to the issues experienced by new owners in the last week or two and all should be equally able to display their frustrations.

It has been said over and over by numerous forum members, far more positive than me, this should be a non story, it shouldn't be happening anymore, the fix is cheap and since available should have been fitted to every car since, prior to handover.

The fact that it hasn't is on MG, the fact dealers are lying, sending mixed messages and generally messing owners around is on them and MG also.

So, I picked up my car, some 250 miles away from my home town on Friday. Sunday morning there appeared to be a trail of oil all over the block weave as I drove away. Worse than this, it's a shared block weave drive! I have to look again tomorrow, as I am not 100% certain if it was oil or water, as I was in a real rush. If it is oil, it will have to go back to a dealer 20 miles away to be fixed.

I have been reading about rejecting a car, the law and this topic is helpful, but it is not what I want to do. If the car isn't fixed after one attempt, though that's what I will do. I shall email the dealer who sold the car of that intention once I confirm if there is a leak and I shall cc MG head office onto the email.

What bothers me is that the dealers are aware of this and they are aware of the fix, so why aren't they dealing with it?

They need to pay for cleaning the block weave if it is oil, because they have been negligent!

I really like the car though!

The million dollar question, hope you get your drive cleaned up.

That's exactly the issue. There is an obvious flaw with a mechanical component. There is a specific replacement part available. The issue is known to the manufacturer.

An immediate recall of all vehicles is the only sensible option. Quite frankly, I don't understand it.

Some dealers are fixing the problem before delivery.
Sloucher's did and mine say they are, and fingers crossed they aren't just spinning me a line, because they have already had to pay to clean a customer's drive.

That takes the shine off what should be a nice experience of enjoying your new car. So unnecessary, anvoidable and immensely frustrating I’m sure.

My guess is it will come down to 2 things - cost and communication. If there was a clear message to dealers that ‘you must fit this part and we will pay you’, I can’t see why it wouldn’t be done. If the message is more - ‘some cars might not need it, we won’t pay unless they do’, well that speaks for itself.

On a positive note… my block drive is in very bad condition, moss, weeds etc - so I hope the car arrives soon so I can get it cleaned foc.

8 to go…

It proves there are some good dealers out there, they take a proactive approach to the situation. This just starts the ownership journey off on such a positive note. There may be other niggles along the way but my relationship with my dealer starting this way would give me a lot of confidence

Well we appear to be passing a milestone and breaking all records for any thread on any subject as far as I can see with now over 100 pages and 2000 posts.
Lots relevant, some not so, and lots unnecessary or insulting to others and which is totally not needed here.

And yet the major issue here still remains and no it’s not the oil leak no no, it’s all about MG motors and lots of there appointed dealers not providing the correct response when they have been informed of the problems that some owners have experienced with this new model, which according to them and the media in general is the best car to be released in the UK for a very long time at this price point.

What a shame it has been so disappointing for some with new cars being rejected, others being returned and still not being repaired properly, and some owners being left with out a car for days and even weeks in some cases.

The word is out and I’m certain many people have and will have second thoughts about buying the MG4 or any other MG vehicle now, in the long run they will pay the price for there unbelievable after sales service or the lack of to their customers.

yeh I think that’s why some have said they have gone to dealers for pictures to be taken and then sent to MG with an order for parts it appears even MG don’t seem to trust their dealers to tell them the truth it’s a ridiculous situation and for a part that can only be a couple pounds and one hour to fit I’m sure.

Do we all have to reset our computers when we get to 2000? I'm scared mine might crash.😉

Everyone has to check their breathers…

Interestingly there seems to be an official recall now from MG concerning the "locked in" problem. Letters are sent - see here:

Really incredible that the oil leak is not dealt with at the same time!
