Having received the car on the 7th of November 2022 I have now put 5000 kilometres (3125 miles) on it in three months. Here is my status report.

Bad things.

My car had the oil leak from the beginning. I told the dealer immediately and they were not able to order the parts (I'm in Germany) in 2022, but in January 2023 the modified breather was fitted, alongside with some other issues (rear window heater didn't work, high beams misaligned, original floor mats did not fit, windscreen wiper smearing, Bluetooth connection faulty, wireless charging faulty, connectivity issues of the car). It took them three days altogether, I got a courtesy car for free and to be honest - everything is fine now.

Software was deficient in the beginning, it's acceptable now. There are still minor shortcomings, but it's really fine. On-board navigation is extremely good (a rarity with oem systems), since it's Google based. CarPlay works very well after the recent update. Responsiveness has also improved and is not class-leading but it's fine for what it is.

Lane keep assitant is shit. The only real drawback left.

Good things.

The car drives exceptionally nice for a vehicle in this class for this price. The chassis is very well balanced. The steering is precise and playful. It really is a joy to drive which is rare with down-to-earth EVs. Build quality is fine. There are no squeaks and rattles whatsoever. Materials are dubious in some places, but look at a VW/Seat/Skoda and you will find the same shabby plastics below your waist line for much more money.

Money. This is a central point. Ordering (and receiving) the car in 2022 I have got the full government grant of EUR 6000 (reduced to EUR 4500 in 2023). So the car cost me EUR 31000 (Luxury model, equal to Trophy in the UK). The cheapest Volkswagen ID.3 is 44000 EUR and the cheapest Kia Niro is EUR 47000 now. Hyundai Kona EV was EUR 36000+, but can't be ordered anymore, because a new model is due - which can't be ordered yet. There really is no vehicle in this class which comes even remotely close in value for money. I'm not saying the MG4 is best in class - but is an ID.3 EUR 10000 better?

Efficiency is good. Even at 0°C I'm having no trouble getting 300 km (187 miles) out of it, I'm sure it will do 400 km (250 miles) in the summer.

I threw away the summer tyres that were factory fitted and put Michelin Cross Climate 2 on it. They work very well, even on ice and snow.

Right now I am happy with the car, everything works fine. I am lucky to have a very competent dealership. This seems to be crucial from what I'm reading here.

Greetings from Bavaria! :)

Considering the amount of teething troubles you’ve experienced, I’m glad to hear you’ve been well supported by your dealer. Great pics! I can’t quite make out if your car is Camden Grey or Black. Anyway, very nice looking Trophy.

Our last two family cars, a Volvo V60 (2019) and a Hyundai Ioniq 5 (2022) both went back to the dealership for manufacturer recalls twice in the first six months of ownership. So I'm not overly bothered as long as it's sorted out for me without too much f*ckery. ;-)

I'm sure the behaviour of the dealer can make or break your relationship to the car.

Edit: It's grey. :)

Hello Bavaria. I spent some time working in Munchen. Loved it. A fantastic experience.
Are there many other MG4 where you live. And if not, what do your friends think of it. Looks great by the way.

The vehicle registration office told me it was the first MG4 they have seen in my district ever. For the entire three months that I own it now I have only seen ONE other MG4. The dealer said that Germany got only 1000 units in 2022 - only 100 of which were Luxury/Trophy models. It was the needle in the haystack.

If you are in Bavaria ever again, say hello! We are at the Ammer lake, it's great there. We can swim and drink beer and have a barbecue.

Have to say, your car looks fantastic in grey. I like my volcano orange but I am also a bit jealous of yours.

Well, there were only 100 cars to be allocated to Germany. The dealer said, I could specify the colour, but it would narrow my chances from almost zero to zero. So I said I'll have any car except white or black. I really hoped a bit for orange or blue, because I think they are really smashing colours and fit the car well. But grey is great in the winter. It always looks not too bad, even if I refrain from washing it. 🤣

That is very kind of you. Tell me. What have your friends said about the MG4. I worked with a company called MTU in Munchen and despite it being a headquarters of BMW, MTU was then associated with Mercedes-Benz and most people there drove Mercedes cars.

Some hate it because they hate all EVs. Some who had a ride are mostly impressed by it, not only considering the price. So far I have taken two around my "home track", a twisty country road where usually only farmers drive their tractors. There it really shines. The rest of the time it works, which is enough for a daily driver for me.

I think it's a conspiracy the only colour I could get quickly was Gray 😂 after 5 weeks and 1700 miles the only problem I seem to have is the audio system keeps switching to BT music 🤔

There is now an update for LKA mine goes in soon for update this is for everyone with MG4

Am I right in thinking the update is that it defaults on every time you start the car but has toned down the severity of the tugging

As ever, it depends! My car has had the LKA update but doesn't default to on every time. It may be because I'm still on R29 for the infotainment software, so it might change if I get that updated.

I don't normally use LKA but have tried it since the update and it seems ok to me. It certainly didn't try to drag the wheel out of my hands. I drove home from the update without realising that the dealer had left LKA on. That was along a mix of dual carriageway and rural lanes. I've still turned it off as I'm not keen on having the wheel move around on its own! And that's nothing to do with the MG as I also didn't like it in a Kia that I test drove.
