What is your opinion on your MG4 for build quality - Good or Bad

In my tiny mind, I compare MG's build quality to it's nearest EV rivals, not ICE cars, as an equivalent priced German ICE for example car is in a different league build quality wise compared to the MG's IMO.

I think the MG4 build quality is good and around the ID3 mark, which is cheap inside, but well screwed together IMO.

I would suggest it's better than a Leaf or Zoe but not as good as the Born's or eMegane's.

I think from purely sitting in a SE, my only concern would be the longevity of the seats as to me they felt relatively poor. Hopefully that proves not to be the case.

All in all I think for the price (of an EV), MG have done a good job.

The id3 is also made in China.

I was under the impression European id3s were made in Germany.

Production of ID.3 at Zwickau plant to start in November 2019
Zwickau to become the largest and most efficient electric car plant in Europe

From Volkswagen newsroom.com

The id3s made under the SAIC VW partnership are only sold in the Asian market.

I have an MG4 SE SR on order which should be here around mid May. I'm at the point now that I am unfortunately losing confidence in the car and MG in general. I find this a real shame as the MG4 pricing was pretty much my only way I could get into EV ownership. Until it was released, I had written the idea off of ever owning one as I wasn't prepared to spend £35k+ on a car. I'm almost resenting the car before it even arrives. I actually have a test drive in a new Megane E-Tech booked but feel that i'm just going through the motions as I know I won't buy a car for £37k. I think i'll give it until the end of the month and then cancel the MG4. It all just seems like one big expensive headache. Perhaps in a few years when a "Gen 2" version comes out i'll try again.

Absolutely no point in committing to a big financial outlay if your aren't 100% happy.

I like the SE SR but there is no getting away from the fact it is built to a budget and money had to be saved in places.
The fit and finish isn't the best, some cars are better than others. It's a budget brand building a really really good budget EV that has a few compromises, you may have a good dealer that if you do need to call on them deliver for you. like I said at the start you need to be 100% happy to commit to the purchase

I’ve got an SE SR. None of the problems you described. It’s all been really good so far, apart from the range.

My average over the first 1000 or so miles is 2.7 miles/kWh so the range is usually around 150 miles at 100%.

I live in Scotland where it’s not warmed up much yet so suspect that has something to do with it. I get it to about 3.1 miles/kWh on a milder day (6 or 7 degrees) and that’s not driving it particularly hard either.

Likewise here ... 2.51 mpkWh is my average so far, but I haven't really done any long trips yet - Grangemouth and back in a day is the longest; 40 miles each way. I drive it like I would any other car - I'm not into hypermiling. :)

For the 'hardware', good build quality, really impressed.

For the software, I think a few more builds are needed before I would say it's good.

For me there are just too many reported faults. Naff seats, bulge in under tray, software issues, oil leak, lock in problems etc. I know this is the first car on the new MSP but it's not like it's MGs first rodeo and it certainly isn't their first EV. I knowingly ordered a standard range so the good range/poor range issue doesn't bother me as it will always be way cheaper to run than my current diesel. My biggest concern is that I thought EVs were supposed to be simpler because they have less moving parts. If that is indeed the case then christ knows what a balls up the MG4 would have been had it also been an ICE car. My wife is trying to convince me to consider the Megane we went to look at but the whole EV journey really is leaving a sour taste in my mouth. It seams you either pay extortionate prices of £35k upwards which the working class guy in me simply cannot do or you go MG4 sub £30k budget (still friggin expensive) and you take your chances. From what some of you are saying, i'd have more chance of a favorable outcome if I put my £36,995 down on a 3 legged donkey to win the Derby. I'll give until the end of the month as the dealer is telling me that their tracking system is down until the 15th Feb (probably a lie), then i'll think about just cancelling and stick with my diesel until i'm absolutely forced to ditch it.

Your wife has good taste😉 in all seriousness though I get what your saying, buying a new car should be exciting and enjoyable and as much as a lot of members are for the most part fine there are a good few shockers out there. There are also more than a good few shocking examples of dealer and MG customer service or lack there off.

Buying your car should certainly not be causing you any worry.

Forums like this one tend to be busier with people complaining than with the people who are content with their car. Especially as there's no real timeframe after which people say "I've had no problems with my car".
I've also seen the same people posting repeatedly about their poor experience. I can understand their frustration, but I'm not sure what it achieves. Why hang around an MG forum when you're driving a Mégane? (But obviously that's just my opinion; they have every right).
Likewise, to be honest, posts like yours will, for some people, reinforce the idea that the MG4 is riddled with faults. But you have no personal experience, real evidence or statistics, just anecdotal evidence. When folk list the issues people have had, it'd be good to balance that with the positives.
That's just my tuppence. I hope you enjoy whichever car you go with.

I've never met Putin but apparently it's quite safe to say he's an arse. I think it's more than anecdotal... the whole no smoke without fire malarkey. I've owned my 2016 Kia Sportage for 4 years and other than MOT's and servicing it has only been in to Kia once and that was a scheduled recall.... once in 4 years!! You are 100% right that there is probably 10 happy owners to every 1 unhappy owner. The problem is that even the happy people seem to be having issues but they are "happy" to live with them. Perhaps more of these "happy" owners should be shouting to the rafters about the joys of MG4 ownership. Otherwise just like other times through history, the silent majority become irrelevant.

Alot of people with the same opinion recently

Same here. Until the MG4 SE came along, I thought it wouldn’t be for a good few years before I could dip my toes into EV ownership.

Same here. I wouldn’t have been able to afford any other EV so went for the MG4.

I’ve been happy with my choice so far but I’m now concerned whether I’ll be able to stick with an EV when it comes time to change the car. With the second hand EV values dropping I could end up with negative equity and EVs might be out of reach. Sincerely hope not after the extra money spent on a charger and the car itself to eventually try and save with the running costs etc!

Second hand prices are coming down partly because of Tesla's price drop. Other manufacturers will have to compete. So hopefully, when it comes time to trade in, you'll be buying a cheaper car.

A couple of weeks ago I was at Motorpoint who had quite a few used/nearly new Tesla's in and they were saying that they would end up making a loss on them due to Tesla reducing the price of their brand-new models versus what Motorpoint bought them for, so much so they had a temporary freeze on Tesla trade-ins.
