MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

Hah!

Oooh, I see what you mean. He's a bit lukewarm/disinterested isn't he? Think it's time to light a fire under him. Spent too many hours this week bouncing between the dealer, mg assist, AA etc. Plus he's now saying the technical report contains no mention of black oil or swarf....you mean the one I have a copy of that says clearly "little oil, the oil remaining is black and contains swarf"? That report? Given to your customer yesterday? Can't mean that one can you Gary?
Never seen the guy but it appears he some kind of sponge put there to soak up any problems or complaints from customers and do nothing about them, when in the early days of the MG5 I found an issue with its roof rails I had correspondence and telephone conversations galore with him and his people and nothing got done until I went to the DVSA.

I’m not sure who you/we can approach with the issues with the MG4, re oil leaks under trays LKA to name a few, but I know G Smart does not live up to his name for customers but probably from MG UK side of it he does.

I also don’t think MG UK are giving there dealers very much support either them have to send pictures of oil leaks to get parts that MIGHT fix it Is beyond belief, and it’s also getting beyond belief that this thread is still rolling on at the rate it is, and I pointed this out on the last podcast 2250 posting up to now.

MG are selling a lot of vehicles but the back up in service and spare parts is pathetic, and it will surely cost them and us the currant owners if this carries on, word in the trade will get out, about the reliability and repair ability due to lack of parts for MG cars and no one will buy them either New or S/H.

Lots of people are still very unsure about going all electric but oil leaks and other things should not be happening on new cars and when it does it should be fix first time and very quickly.
The LKA in the wrong hands can become dangerous I have said before when we picked up my wife’s mg4 the LKA was switched on and nearly took us into a ditch good job I was driving and had read about it stopped rustled through the menus and turned it off.

How many people go on holiday and hire a car the MG4 I’m sure will become a popular hire car soon like the Corsa and fiesta but with its currant software some body hiring one might not realise what is going on with the steering and end up in an accident.

I found him unhelpful to the point of rudeness. When I got more assertive and corrected his misinformation, he stopped replying to any emails.

I think that is what he's going to do tbh as I'm not accepting his bland responses. I think I need to go above him. This issue caused my car to stop dead with no warning. I'm on the M25 every day, I'm just grateful I hadn't made it there when it happened.

It needs resolving. MG are throwing their franchisees under the bus. As I've mentioned, my car stopped dead with no warning. That had the potential to be catastrophic if I'd been on the motorway.

I could be wrong, but I don’t think there is anyone above him at MG that will respond. I was told, by him, that if you write to a director for example, it all gets passed back to him. It seemed clear to me that MG had no desire to do anything other than obfuscate, trivialise what you are experiencing and ultimately, refuse to engage if you don’t accept what they say. You’re then left with the only option to seek resolution with the dealer, this is what they want. Essentially, MG “Customer Care“ department is so ineffective, it may as well not exist. I wish you luck!

Which is why I permanently fixed the problem; my problem, by rejecting the car.

I see the manufacture incompetence to offer a fix to the problem (multiple attempts) nor want to take is seriously because it "isn't a safety concern.

I'm done with it

It appears that way. Has anyone gone to the CEO for Europe or the PR guy I wonder? Is it worth taking to the ombudsman? His attitude is disgusting. Customer "Service" my arse.

This seems to validate the theory that faster driving makes the oil leak problem occur earlier or at all. Some may have a faulty gearbox but no leak because they are taking short urban trips only.

Curiosity got the better of me today so I put my SE SR up on ramps and drained the oil to see just what was in there after 1600 miles and 7 weeks on the road.
A little over 600ml came out, drain plug was covered in a very fine metal 'silt'.

'Break in' silt is normal and it stuck to the magnet so that doesn't unduly concern me but the amount of oil does, just how much is expected to come out when the plug is pulled ?
There's no fill level plug that I can find, just a 17mm hex fill only way above driveshaft level.

Macadoodle, what actual colour is it...dark red or dark brown or as stated black?

I believe red is OK, brown is well used time for a change and black is 😱🚽🧻

That's not good looking at all, definitely less than should be in there, even with the theories between 900/750 and it's a horrible colour for 7 weeks old.
The fact you describe a metal silt is even more worrying

I spoke to head of service at my dealer couple weeks ago when car last in. I asked him if 750 ml was the current advised fill level still and he said yes. You drained 600 ml out and some will remain, does 150 ml sound like an expected amount to remain to the more technically minded here?

2/3 of the supposed factory fill seems concerning but who knows.
I didn't want to put that crap back in so refilled with 700ml of oil I had left over from my leaf days.
Possibly not the right spec but I'll track down some of the correct stuff next week.
Yes, I know I should leave this to the dealer but It's not worth the hassle to me at the moment, 50 mile round trip .

When I had my MG5 SR I tried to find this new fancy unicorn oil to do a routine change at quite low miles after seeing the black mess that came out of our 24kwh leaf at the same miles.

long story short, never did locate any so left it. Hopefully things have improved over the last year…….

Macadoodle well done you have done a great job there couple of question for you
1 has the level been adjusted at any time by your dealer?
2 have you had a modified breather fitted and if so has it fixed the leak.
So please read on below I was writing this as your posting and picture of your jug popped up

Hi all this has gone on long enough with no guaranteed fix or modification coming along from MG motors, so today I have filled out a complaints form on the motoring ombudsman website.
I have tried to explain the problems that we the owners of these vehicles have but the form was very limited in what you could enter, so I have requested to have some one contact me, and i have sent my full details for them to do so, action is needed and I will update the forum if and when I get a reply

Recalls for doors not opening taking for to long to be carried out IMHO.
Oil leaks still outstanding after several very poor attempts to stop them.
The LKA which IMO is an accident waiting to happen to someone which we are told requires only a software update only to fix as does the locking in that some people have experienced with there vehicles.
And the under tray issues that my dealer told me is not going to be fixed I know there is other items in need of attention but these appear to be the main issue that require attention plus a good slap on the Wrist for the people at MG.

So if and when they reply I will update the forum.
Les.
