Happy buying a car from a country that is becoming increasingly authoritarian, repressive and on the brink of offering lethal support to Putin?

They are already offering non-lethal support but this suggest they may go further. China needs Russia to succeed or at least make some gains to support its plans to grab Taiwan.

I appreciate every car out there will have chinese parts and technology but MG is an in-your-face 100% chinese product. It was a very small factor when I cancelled my MG4 order. I was basically not being honest with myself looking back. As things have developed I could not in all consciousness drive a chinese car right now.

Well, for many (almost) similar reasons, I wouldn't have a Tesla. But let's not politicise this forum.
I agree about Tesla.

I just thought I would throw something a little meatier in as a counter-balance to some of the, in my opinion, trite and mind numbing threads and endless discussions about e.g. whether to leave my MG logo in chrome or get a black cover. Come on guys, while we are playing with our toys there are grownups out there in the real world fighting against repressive regimes. One of them makes nice shiny Orange EVs and they want us to buy them to maintain our reliance on them so we are less likely to want to sanction them.

I'm guessing nobody out there would buy a drone right now that said Made in Iran on it.. but an MG from China is OK?

Do you not think that the UK government has a major part to play in taking the lead on this? If the UK government sanctions the import and sale of goods, can you really blame a customer from buying them? There are also complex economic issues at play.
As I’m sure will be said, in almost every instance if you go back far enough or depending on your political stance you could argue against nearly all both foreign and British goods in some way. Or not watch the football World Cup or the LIV golf or support Man U anymore if it becomes UAE owned. Or buy an iPhone because it’s made in China etc etc.
As far as your point about some of the discussions about badges etc on here - that’s what the forum is for isn’t it? Yes our issues really are 1st world but that’s what we come on here to discuss.
I’m sure that many owners and potential owners do have concerns about this type of thing, but the political landscape can change very quickly, particulary where economies are concerned.

Look at your I-phone or Samsung phones for instance, they are (not solely) made in China.

Just about anything with electrons in it is either partially or wholely made in China.

If we are prepared to pay the extra for having stuff made 'in the West' but most peeps just aren't.

These ethical issues are very hard to navigate through of course and we can construct arguments to support our view either way and push responsibility on to others. However, China will attack Taiwan. They have said very clearly they are prepared to take it by force if necessary. There can be no negotiated solution so its going to happen. That is likely to be in the next few years. They are already preparing the ground for it e.g. this balloon nonesense. There will be a massive western response with sanctions, trade embargoes etc. I'm not sure I want to be driving a Chinese car at that point for a variety of reasons both morally and from practical perspective. I am not preaching here as I probably would have gone ahead with my MG4 order, everything else being equal and fine, but cancelling has given me the time and space to think of bigger issues than oil leak breather tubes and bulging undertrays.

On the bright side - if there are massive sanctions on China and products like the MG get all support withdrawn and become difficult to own - most owners won’t notice a difference.

What country sold MG to China? What goods would be available if UK stopped all Chinese imports? More importantly let's keep this site open for the electric vehicles MG brand makes, and not about all the bad stuff the Chinese government do.

You chose to read this thread. We all have a choices. In a democracy the boundaries of freedom doesn’t extend to limiting other peoples choice to disagree with you. Anyway, this is one little thread at the end of the day. Hopefully there is room for a stirrer like me. I know, I annoy myself sometimes.

When we ordered our MG4 we did think of the ramifications of our decision. We do not support the Chinese autocracy for its policies on Uyghurs ,Hong Kong ,Taiwan, militarised newly built islands in in South China sea with 200 mile territorial claims and putting down any legal demonstrations on foreign soil . Because we have considered these issues are we worse than somebody who has not when ordering our vehicle. Are we callous ? as others have said should we
follow the lead of our respective governments.
Is SAIC an independent Chinese company or heavily influenced by higher authorities as to its export policies .
The latest news suggests China support for Putin and if the west then follows its path of sanctions against Russian support then perhaps the shit will hit the fan and then where will we stand not just as MG owners.
Brexit (yes that old chestnut) has already taught us we are not a united country or peoples, and if the right wing brain dead sensationalist press aka daily mail start an anti Chinese campaign how much is it to suppose their lager swilling moronic followers will start some sort of retaliation against Chinese goods of which the MG badge is prime target and find great pleasure in reinacting a Kristalnacht on our windscreens and perhaps worse. Fantasy maybe?
Secondhand prices would plummet.
So politics and world situations are of concern to all of us should we chose to get involved , even for us on this forum.
Am I going to cancel my order? No I am a selfish hypocritical git ( thought I,d get that in first) and if the French government should change the rather large grant available to me ,of which 45% goes to MG, in respect to recent news events , then financially ,yes.
Sweet dreams everyone.
