MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

My guess:
  • the 2e/3e mg fluid leak 'solution' is just for the first produced cars
  • the new produced cars (almost) have the redesigned gearbox (stopping new owners complaints has priority)
  • afterthat a recall for cars with the 'old' gearbox to replace them with the new one

How would an owner know if he/she has the modified box?
Is there a definitive build date after which yiu definitely have the modified one?

So just to clarify something, has this issue been fixed in the latest cars off the production line?
I don't think that has been answered for certain, there was mention a while ago of the modified breather being factory fitted. I haven't heard anywhere that they have done a redesign of the gearbox

Yes, I think Hagen was just speculating what they "should" do. I've heard nothing about a redesigned gearbox, though it seems likely this will be necessary unless they can come up with a reliable fix.

I've had acknowledgement from the DVSA that my report for the oil leak has been received and allocated to an Engineer to review, to determine if it is a single issue or a widespread problem.

Based on this I'd ask that anyone who has the issue to report it via the DVSA defect reporting service.

Is there a reference we can use / quote so we can keep it all together for DVSA?

Although mine has “so far” been ok with the new breather pipe, I have no issue reporting the issue.

There's no reference I just put description as "Oil leaking from gearbox breather"

And description of defect, as

"oil leaking from gearbox breather, appears to be a common fault, oil drips into undertray at rear of vehicle near to rear wheels which could cause an issue with grip to driven rear wheels and could endanger other road users as it drips on to the road."

What's the best link to use to report this to DVSA?

I wouldn't write exactly the same or they will think it is a spammer.

What's the latest with yours? If I remember correctly, you had the modified breather fitted, but it still leaked, so the garage were having a think about it?

With mine, it had the modified breather, still leaked, back to garage who corrected the fittings, which was supposed to have stopped the leak. I've been checking regularly and I'm not convinced that the leaking has stopped. There seems to be the odd small drop on the ground occasionally underneath still. But, with the rain recently, I'm not 100% certain, and also the car looks relatively clean underneath, which it certainly didn't when the oil leaked before. I want to be sure before I contact my dealer again, as they're not close to home.

I'm awaiting feedback from the dealer, after they notified MG (with photos). Not heard anything yet. (I called this morning and am awaiting a callback).

I've just filed a DVSA report. (Edit: I was a lot more verbose than @Ayoull's example 😁 and I provided a link to this thread). :)

Edit 2: and I've now received my auto-response. :)

People that didn't know better would probably think it was something! After 5 months of no solution

So they haven't told you not to drive it, which is what my dealer told me?

I think you're about 2,565 posts too late with that advice, @Donald ;)
And probably 5000 sleepless night trying to decide what’s best to do next

Hi again all you may remember a couple of weeks ago I said I had submitted a form to the motor ombudsman service about this oil leak issues, so I have now spoken with one of there advisors who told me they are not able to look into the problem as MG motors are not registered to there services,!! I explain this is not just myself with this issue there are many other owners as well and there advice was to check if individual dealerships might be registered with them and if so they may be able to act on an individual basis only, so each owner needs to check if there dealer is on there list but there is nothing further they can do it appears.

You'd expect an ombudsman to be mandatory
