Couple of things on the SatNav:
Does it have access to traffic information and can it reroute you to avoid traffic jams and road closures?

Despite being set to fastest roads, the MG satnav constantly asks me to take very narrow roads, sometimes roads that are blocked (including on one occasion a private farm track).

Any way to avoid it, apart from using Android Auto or Apple?

Disappointingly there is no live traffic or re-routing on the 5. Annoying really because its available on the MG4 and ZS with the same infotainment system. I would prefer to not have to use AA all the time.

Anybody else having their Satnav freeze On MG5? Mine said that I was 15 miles from home when I was in my driveway! Sorts itself out if I switch the car off and then on again but rather an agricultural solution.

I've never even tried MG's own satnav. Like the VW Polo one, it doesn't have anywhere near the ability of Google maps or Waze via AA... add to that, the annual VW price to get updated and the archaic way it was updated made it an absolute pain.

In settings, check that "dead reckoning" isn't on. Might be worth a try ;)

Did you try restarting the infotainment instead of the car, a little less agricultural but not totally.

Yes I have found using the AA and ones on my hone as it works better then the one on my 5 plus they are updated more often

To me, one of the biggest disadvantages to the built-in SatNav is the fact that map updates have to be purchased, usually costing £100, or more, each! Yes, the updates are pretty comprehensive (usually essentially complete "new maps") but, inevitably, the mapping data of an update can be "out of date" rather quickly and the length of time between these updates being released can be annoying if one is driving along, e.g., a new road and the SatNav thinks you are actually crossing a field! (Yes, that has happened to me, using the built-in MG SatNav in my old MG6, using the "latest release" of the maps!)

Thankfully, NAVTEQ, the suppliers of the MG SatNav software don't release updates very often but when one can use Google Maps or Apple Maps or apps like Waze (all regularly updated for free!) why would one choose to use the built-in SatNav?

Thanks for those links.

Interesting information there! However, I think this may only refer to the facelift version (my car is an MG5 2022 but pre-facelift) AND, possibly, only in the EU. (I've downloaded the maps and instructions so will have a very careful look at them later.)

to be honest if you type your VIN it should show you all resources to download and if one of them is MAP UPDATE (pdf) you should then be able to follow instructions and download most recent maps for your satnav...
I haven't got pre facelift VIN so can't see what is the option for you.
On the other hand if your map data version is anything like: HERE_EU_21Q1 2021..... i can't see reason why it would not work.

edit:
just done some research...
so for pre facelift you can try this service: Naviextras.com - Map updates for your navigation device and more...
download software called Naviextras Toolbox
and follow instructions from here: Naviextras.com - Map updates for your navigation device and more...

if you lucky you might get some free update... if not... wel I know me and i know i would still try to update it with here maps as it must be same database just config file might be slightly different

Unfortunately, the screen shown in the Map Update pdf (to check the currently installed maps version) is not present in the pre-facelift version, despite the fact that the web page you linked recognises my VIN and so allows me to download both the pdf and the Maps Update zip file!

So, I will need to think very carefully before even attempting to install these maps!

FYI I just typed in my VIN and all the downloaded files seem to apply to the facelift version . Bad show MG

Naviextas link are for preface lift one
That's what I've been using... for what good it's done me .:) . My point is though is how can MG link the VIN to a different version of the MG 5 ? Surely it should link to the exact same version ?

I've just looked at the unzipped files of the Maps Update on the linked page given above and I can find NOTHING applicable to the UK!

I have a very strong suspicion, as I suggested earlier, these particular updates are for the EU only! For the sake of those who have the facelift MG5 I hope I am wrong. 😭

SORRY! Please disregard all the above! I've just checked again and there is mapping data and images etc. for GBR!
