I’ve just stopped at a petrol station in the MG4, there’s no ancillary parking spaces, so I’ve just parked at a pump stop while I went in briefly to get some food.

While I’ve gone in, someone’s come running in shouting and saying that I need to move immediately because it’s not safe. Another person in the queue (who say they own a Tesla), said that I’ll have “ruined the battery” by parking there and I should get the car “checked out” asap.

Surely this is all rubbish, right?! Surely an EVs safety features enable it to park near to fuel supply? Otherwise there would be signage…right? Plus, I’m sure I’ve seen countless EVs stopped there before….

Some guidance please so I can decide whether or not this was a terrible idea or just people being sarky

There's an awful lot of ignorance out there about EVs.

They are far less likely to catch fire than an ICE car - 11x less according to Tesla figures and if it does catch fire an EV smoulders then burns slowly, allowing time not only to escape but also remove belongings, whereas an ICE vehicle goes up in a big fireball.

As to the possibility of a stray spark from an EV igniting fuel at the pump, this is much more likely with an ICE vehicle: EVs have very heavily protected electrical systems, whereas an ICE car has actual moving parts grinding and whirring around under the bonnet. ICE petrol vehicles actually include spark generators sitting a foot or two away from the pump!!

I would like to think that you just laughed at them but as you have posted this it seems you weren't too sure what to think after their ignorant but humorous comments.

Just goes to show how much more education is needed.

They went on to say that the Earth is flat and Formica is edible....

Is it really all my fault
That kettles boil no more ?
Now toast is just hot bread
Am I a waster to the core
Sittting all day at chargers
Using all the oil and coal
For power stations can’t keep up
With the kilowatts I stole
Sun and wind are useless
As everyone’s aware
To power up my milkcart
With far more than my share.
So perhaps I should return
To that halcyon diesel day?
Apologise, repent, change back?
Says I , no blooming way !!

I still see signs that warn not to use mobile phones in a fuel station, so maybe the person thought that having a battery slightly bigger would be a very serious risk.
The likelihood of a mobile phone causing any kind of problem has since been pronounced incorrect, unless, of course, someone is so distracted by their conversation that they put in the wrong fuel.

That’s the electrical equivalent of being ICE’d 🤣 We should name it being EV’d and all
have a go.
Parked EV? - PEV'd?

I've always wondered about that - Mobile phone vs large thing that sparks and explodes the stuff!!?? And then some petrol companies have apps that can be scanned at the pump.....

At some point (talking back in early days of Mobiles) there were fires attributed to mobiles but this was debunked. Same as the rumour it was about interfering with the pump metering mechanism.

Completely agree, I did a large independent research project some years ago regarding the use of mobile handset/RF and flammable liquids and it was quite conclusive.
