I may be about to buy an MG5 but have no home charging. I always heard that Zappi were good, but does anyone have other recommendations?

It will be a slightly non-standard install as I want the charger installed on the outside of our detached garage.

Try a search, there are many threads asking the same question and some very comprehensive good answers.
Just click on the search button and type in 'charger recommendations'

I can recommend Ohme Home Pro, especially if you want to go for octopus intelligent, or the new OVO tariff

Most chargers are installed outside? I have mine just inside the garage door which protects it from the weather (and any interference). It allows me to charge the car inside or outside the garage (I just run the cable under the door when outside charging). It also keeps the cable (if non tethered) safe from sticky fingers.
I would go with Leni16's recommendation and reasoning (Ohme Home Pro)

Yes most are outside but I think the op meant that it is on a separate building (detached garage) hence unusual supply run.

So far I have never heard of anyone stealing electricity by using someone's charger and you can protect them against tampering with a PIN code. It is a highly unlikely crime, since you'd be on the drive for hours with your numberplate clearly showing.

In terms of stealing tethered cables, again that doesn't seem to be a thing either and if it was, probably safer to target public chargers rather than homes.

Thanks to all for the advice - I've also spoken to our neighbour (EV, solar, battery) and he has a Zappi - mainly because of it's integration. We haven't decided about solar/batteries yet.

It looks like it's between a Zappi or Ohme Home Pro at the moment. i have someone coming round on Monday to discuss/quote and he also fits others as well - such as Hypervolt.

Indeed - we have power in the garage at the moment, but the cable looks inadequate to me - and the MCB is rated at 20amps.

Once we get suitable armoured cable underground from the house to garage, then it's just a standard install.

Needs 32amps and suitably rated cable. The other common issue is whether you have a 100amp house main fuse or a 60/80 one that might need changing (depending on the circuits and load you have).

A complicating factor might be if the install requires a CT clamp - that will also need to run back to the main supply, so that it can compensate if you are getting close to your main fuse limit.

Remember to check with your energy provider I know octopus and OVO fit ohme at discount you may end up with one of them for cheap 10p charging be it 4h,6h with octopus or 24h with ovo

Fitted Ohme Pro with my good friend (who is a qualified electrician) and it’s good :)

Used 6mm Ev 3 core with data by Doncaster cables. 110 for 15m (non SWA). Two data cables inside allows for Load balancing. Some cables have Cat5 which is good for zappi.

Needed the 8m tethered one, so 650 for just the charger.

MCB and new RCD bits required so about £50

All in all, cost me around 1k including electricians cost.

Worth it for me as we do 20k miles a year in the car, so 10p per kWh from 33p on Intelligent Octopus tariff!

Just waiting for MG to integrate with Ohme now … !! Can’t see any updates for past year!

That’s good advice :) Every time I completed the survey for these installations, it would be a lot higher than off-the-shelf price due to: 15m of cable, RCD bits, Ohme pro 8m rather than 5m.

150ish for a 10m type 2 cable

Yer fixed price is up to 10m with octopus

And fixed price direct from ohme is up to 15m and I believe you get extra £70 off with OVO

Hypervolt if you have solar. Much tidier than a Zappi.
The Zappi seems to let you plug the car end of the cable into a socket, though, whereas it looks as if the Hypervolt just leaves the lead dangling - it's hard to see from the pictures

Definitely go for the Zappi if you have solar and or a home battery.
Check out the Ohme if you think Intelligent Octopus would be a good for a cheap overnight tariff.
Zappi is good. But do your maths before Octopus do night time 12.30 to 4.30 at 12p Kw, they hike up day tariff from 35p to 45p. So of you don‘t have solar and battery and only need to charge your EV to full once every two weeks, work it out against your home usage.. OVO have rolled out 10p kw any time for EV charging keeping the same tariff for home use, unfortunately only compatible with 2 chargers they supply. They will be rolling out other compatible chargers, when ?
