Completely dead this morning

My car did exactly the same last Friday. The only difference being, the AA guy managed to charge the 12v battery and the car woke up again.

However, it’s been in the garage since Monday, I got a courtesy car and the woman on the service desk said I’ll not likely get it back this week as it’s quite a major investigation! 🤨

Thoughts on the length of time for what I’d imagine would just be a battery swap?!!

Same with ours. Last week the car died on the drive. A ctek charger overnight didn’t work. The AA battery boost woke the car up and I left it with MG for a few days. They did the software update/recall and said “it’s an odd case, hasn’t been seen before!” And we should be ok now. 2 days ago, the car allowed access via key but refused to start. AA did some kind of reset and car made it home with all sorts of warning lights. It’s going back in to MG tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

My car is going to dealer in April for a plethora of fixes and remedies. I’m thinking of getting them to fit a new 12v battery while it’s there. Anyone have a recommendation for me?

People have said good things about Vartas. Also I have heard the recommendation to get a leisure battery (like the ones for campers) rather than something with high cranking amps, for best longevity. You can pay a lot for those so it depends on whether you think it is worth it.

Update - They had my car for 3 (THREE) days. They put the problem down to software. Not sure how the software can decide after 3 months to discharge the battery but ok.

So it’s had a software update so now the LKA is on every time I start the car and now it says are you sure you want to switch it off! FML 🤦🏻‍♂️

Anyway this whole thing has pissed me off so much and hearing of other people’s problems (people I know in person, not online chat) with electric vehicles, not just MG, has made my mind up so I’m getting rid of this car. Going back to petrol until the electric thing is more established if ever and review in a few years.

I fear it may be too late to change your opinion but I'd try not to let it put you off all EVs completely. We have been driving the Mazda MX-30 with zero issues for a couple of years now and there will be 1000s of people who live trouble free lives with other EVs too. We hear regularly about the problems and the negatives as hearing stories about everything being fine with a car gets boring pretty quick.

Was the MG your first EV? Did you consider any others at all?

None of your issues are EV-related. We have completely changed to EVs over a year ago now and had no real issues whatsoever. We have been to Italy multiple times with a small child (400 miles away). All worked perfectly fine. There are lots of things to optimise still, but electric mobility works.

If you are that easily put off you should stick with what you know. You have to be at least a little flexible when using technology of any sort. This type of thing is relative minor. Nothing is perfect. Good luck.

Yeah I've done Southern UK to North Scotland & back in a 38kw Leaf - No real issues

Electric Mobility can and does work

12v batteries are unfortunatey very old technolgy now and the manufaxturing in the last 10 years has become very poor. 5 year warrenty on a lead acid battery is a joke now. I have had 3 batteries die on me in my last ICE car. Each had so called 5 year warrenty. None could be replaced free because of small print in the warrenty. It is 19th century in 21st century technology.
Anyway I hope they are able to cure your problem soon.

Car finally (Friday 10:30am) made it to the garage. They were first called at 7:55am on monday. This is the AA unfortunately not being very good, now it’s time for the MG dealer to diagnose and fix it. Will see what happens.
There is a tiny part of my brain saying buy a second hand long range 2021 M3 for £38k. I could stretch to it if I wanted to….

This is a simple thing to fix with a replacement battery and something that can happen on any EV. Indeed it did with Teslas a few years back.

Don't understand why you'd now want to change the car because of it?

I am concerned that there were 2 attempts to charge the 12v and neither showed anything. Also I wasn’t 100% decided in the first place, my wife was keen on a brand new car so that’s why I went for the MG4.

The battery just needs replacing and with a decent brand.

Why did it take nearly 5 days to get the car to the garage? Did you accept this without complaint?

A new order base Tesla M3 is a smidge under £43k. The screen shot that you posted at just under £39k are inventory pre-registered cars. Still a good deal though.

I thought they are the current stock, rather than pre-reg.
You may be right. It’s been a while since I looked at inventory cars. They used to be pre-registered. If they are not then there is little or no incentive to order a new car if they have stock - especially with the savings.
