Lane Keep Assist feature

The windscreen camera is used for several of the assist functions - block it and all those functions get disabled (with associated warnings). That includes TJA/ACC.

Yes, this is how it should be working, but it seems quite a few people with earlier cars don't have the necessary updates installed to make it well behaved.
Mine like that from day 1 - 1st 1000 batch - delivered Sept 22

my understanding is that the radar near the numberplate is distance, and the windscreen is steering, no doubt they co-exist with each other - ones does wonder if a simple fix is to put a bit of sticky tape over the windsreen camera (i.e snow simulation) - to disable it?

It ‘should’ only be a matter of time until someone, somewhere, gets OBD11 to work on the MG4 and then owners will be able to access the settings and switch lane assist off permanently.
I’ve yet to get my Cupra Born but have already ordered the OBD11 that will allow me to do this (and other stuff) for a paltry £40.
And there are plenty of tutorial videos showing me how.
One major stress point already dealt with. 😊

Had car for one week and been for a few drives on B class roads. I'm struggling to relax at the wheel. In my previous car I would cruise resting arm on door with fingers lightly controlling steering. Not any more. Two hands on wheel at all times ready to fight sudden unexpected tugs on wheel. Despite keeping in middle of lane I am finding the LKA sensor goes crazy on rough road surfaces (most roads in Scotland), is severely effected when damp road surfaces are drying out as well as repaired road surfaces that are different shade from rest of road. Downright dangerous if you ask me. Its only a matter of time before a MG4 wipes out a cyclist due to this feature.

Id say lightly holding the wheel is more dangerous

I picked up my car today too with a build date of feb 12th.

I deliberately pulled over the white line to trigger the lane assist.

I got a beep and a very light tweak through the steering, almost unnoticeable.

I believe from my own experience and reading around there may be two levels of steering. LKA is the nudge you refer to, whereas ELK is less frequent but more aggressive and was really quite alarming the one time it kicked in. NCAP have descriptions of the two systems which would seem to support.

Whatever it is, its the default setting

Mine is on ELK, the default and so far again today it hardly seems to do anything on back roads, A road and B roads round here. probably because they are all in such poor repair it is wondering why I am driving off road all the time.

Will get to a Motorway at some point to try it there

Yeah both are part of the Lane Support System. ELK is the more aggressive.
The boundaries between their activations can overlap a bit but usually ELK would activate when there's a predicted collision with another road user or the car is about to cross a road edge. LKA would activate when about to cross a road lane marking.

The thing to watch for is that unless you get an "Are you sure?" type popup (similar to the one in the pic below) when you switch off LKA, it is not off!

When driving, look at the symbol I've highlighted in the pic below

  • Yellow = LKA Off
  • White = LKA Ready (On)
  • Green = LKA Active (On & trying to kill you)
Wonko;
Many thanks for this as a picture is worth a thousand words !
I will take the photos with us when we take the car in later this week.

Drove 10 miles on B class toads this morning that had been salted overnight due to freezing temps. Forgot to turn lka off and had a real white knuckle ride as car was reacting to the various lines that the drying up salt was leaving.
Anyway, just realised that before placing my order in December, i took an MG4 for two half hour test drives on mixture of A roads and twisty turny country roads. At no time did I experience lka at all. If I had, and at the dangerous level I do now, I would have questioned the salesperson and I doubt I would have placed the order. The first test drive was pre booked but for the second I turned up on spec and was just given the keys so the salesperson never had a chance to change car settings. So there must be some way that dealers have of permanently disabling it as it is would obviously put off potential buyers on a test drive.

Im now 3 days and 170 miles into ownership and any LKA interaction has been very very mild. Most of the time the graphics on screen dont show it actually seeing the lane divider and it spends a lot of its time inactive.

If it does go off its a tiny twitch of the wheel and sometimes a short beep.

I havnt changed the default settings

I think the 1st batch of cars had LKA default to off (thats what it currently is on mine)

You're not necessarily wrong, but I suspect that your test drive pre-dated the software update that has left the majority of drivers (though not all) unable to turn it permanently off.

I would be disappointed (but not necessarily surprised) if the Dealers had a magic way of avoiding the LKA response. I would imagine that if they knew of a "magic bullet" to avoid owner complaints then they wouldn't be slow in making it known either directly or indirectly.
I would be interested to know whether you have reported your experience to the Dealer and what the reaction has been ?

I think I will consult the dealer on this. Might be good to hear from anyone who has taken a demonstrator our for a test drive in recent weeks. If they experience the severity of lka that I experience every few minutes of careful driving on B roads there is no way these cars would sell.

My dealer is still using the same demo car from October so there wouldnt be any change there

I recall my dealer changing a setting before we test drove for the first time back in September. I didn't see what he did but maybe it was disabling LKA at the time.

My LR Trophy doesn't have these kinds of LKA issues but then it has all the latest module software updates and it does sound like the SR cars have different software.
