Red Light on particulate filter

Hi Everyone has anyone got anymore updates on this issue we have the same vehicle and have been told to not drive the car. Also been told it could cost us if its blocked as we should of read the handbook and go on longer journeys to burn it off??

Isn’t this the 3-cylinder turbo engine manufactured by GM (Vauxhall) that has caused problems elsewhere on e.g. the Corsa?

I had exactly the same problem 2 weeks ago and this thread was really helpful. I spoke with my MG garage, followed the advice of driving 20 miles over 50mph and, of course, it made no difference. I was aware that it had also been misfiring for a few months. MG garage couldn't get it booked in until next week - so I took it to a local garage who reset everything and it's been absolutely fine since then. It cost me £70! I noticed that after it was reset, the misfiring issue had stopped. But, as the start/stop function was misfiring and buggering up my dashcam, I just automatically turn it off now as soon as I start the engine.

Thanks Amcarn. I have the same problem. Is it easy enough for the local garage to reset everything? Did they say exactly what the issue is - eg a sensor? Thanks

Hi Smokie,

I think the issue is that these larger corporations think they can just copy and paste messages to people and most people will not pursue further. I just returned from the authorised repairer today and said he has had 3 more brought in today, all the same thing, all straight to red light and all MG deny under not being under warranty.

He agreed that this is an issue, and he as a repairer believes it should be covered because the system is designed to alert people prior by turning on amber light - that the driver needs to either get the motor moving or get in for service. On every occasion he has had at the garage all have been reported as red light.

From his point of view he cannot repair for free because he will not be paid by MG, which I totally understand. He needs to make a living.

The problem is he says a lot of people just pay because they need their car and very few people actually bother to take it further.

There are a lot of other forums across the internet I have subsequently found where people are reporting the same issue. Several people already expressing an interest.

I know the driving patterns of this car. 2 trips each day - one to her office the other home. Both trips are long motorway trips.

From my point I can afford the repair, its not a cash issue. But I can imagine with this type of vehicle, its appealing cost, the idea of a 7 year warranty that the target market is people with limited means. This car is not targeted at people who can afford a more expensive car, so in most cases this sort of issue causes them huge problems - not able to get to work, take care of children, elderly loved ones not able to make trips etc

In this economical environment someone has to stand up for those who may not have the means to do so. I would happily pay for our own problem to be resolved if MG agreed to change their policy on this for every other vehicle they sold.

Additionally the idea of a particulate filter on a petrol car is silly. Not only does it reduce the performance of the car increasing consumption throughout a calendar year, it ends up causing problems like this on more occasions than not. The second hand car market is rife and a lot of these will end up in that international market with those filters just plain and simple ripped out and jailbroken so the light does not come on.
Thanks for this, are there any recommendations for people that do short trips so the don’t keep getting these filter issues?

Hi - I have stumbled across this forum online. I have recently experienced the same issue on my car. Its an MG ZS, The particulating filter light has straight away went to red with an amber engine malfunction light coming on at the same time. I have managed to get it booked in to the dealership in a few days, but they have indictated as the filter light is red this is unlikely to be covered under the warranty. Im very concerned about this as would never have ignored the light had it come on as amber and given me the chance to do something about it. Im hoping some of you can provide an update on your experience getting this covered under the warranty?

Thanks

What Garage did you use I have been to 3 different garages now all cost me £50 to put on the machine but none could reset the fault? My light came on red straight away and into limp mode been undrivable for a month now and MG have told me I can take it on for them to check but if the filters blocked then its chargeable to me. I have been given a rough idea of £1200 to replace, anybody else got any other ideas with this only had the car 6 months its got 20000 miles on?

I am experiencing the same issue currently with a 69 plate a local garage have advised a sensor issue. However when I have taken this to an MG dealer I have been advised it needs replacing and will cost around £1200 to be replaced, even though an amber light never appeared . This seems to be a common issue reading these threads, the part has to be ordered from China and will take around 6 weeks to arrive. The car only has 22000 miles on the clock, also has an issue with the steering column, which means the car is unsafe to drive - this is covered by the warranty luckily. This is the second ZS I have had in less than a year, definitely will not be recommending or ever purchasing one of these in the future

Hi all,

This thread helped us massively, so thank you all!

We had the exhaust particulate light come on our dashboard the middle of May (the day of our holiday!) with no amber light, just straight on red. The car wouldn’t go over 3000 revs either and felt a bit weird driving.

Rang the dealership where I bought the car and was advised they couldn’t fit us in until end of June, and we called as soon as we were back in the UK which was May 29th. Rang another branch and couldn’t get an answer so took it to an independent garage and wasn’t able to get any codes up on their machine so looked like it was blocked to MG. This garage was 10 minutes from the branch I tried calling so took a journey down to be told end of June. I advised the issue and the car was misfiring, which then a manager was able to squeeze me in that week. When I took the car down, an engineer was at the desk and asked what the issue was and told me that they’d already had a few in and believed it to be a sensor issue.

Fast forward a few days and my car was fixed, and confirmed that the light came on due to a sensor issue and was covered by warranty - hallelujah!

The car was picked up June 3rd, two days ago we said the car didn’t feel right when driving. Today, I get a phone call advising that my car has two recalls on it and needs to be in for repair for a few weeks.

I purchased my MG ZS in April 2019 so on a 19 plate, automatic transmission and we’re in the South Wales area.

Looks like MG are noticing the issue and potential issues - fingers crossed for us🤞🏼

Hi

Same thing here. I’m in France - drove all the way from Scotland so it’s not like they can say I only do short trips. Been flying down motorways 130 km/hr. That’s legal here. So light came on yesterday straight to red and amber engine one too. I took it to a French MG dealer who said it was complicated and wouldn’t touch it. Local guy at Feu Verte (French qwikfit) ran diagnostics and said soot in exhaust. I got the can of super petrol stuff and put it in and drove on motorway. It’s going fine. Not in limp mode. My MG dealership in Glasgow said it’s under warranty. It’s 2020 MG XS. I’ve had it serviced. But not sure if under warranty for France MG. My problem is MG recovery won’t get it in France. At first I was told yes they’d come then they said I’m only covered for UK. I don’t know if I should drive it back to UK and then get roadside assistance to come get it at Dover? I’m not due to leave France for three more weeks. I was going to just not drive it until then and hope it will make it back to UK. Any advice folks?

why do you have an engine light, soot in exhayst and need super petrol stuff in an EV?

all the above is so true of my MG ..ongoing issues for 2 and half years from new ..Particulate filter always showing red never amber, engine management light comes on in amber, headlights blowing both at the same time and the engine manifold cracked last year and a full rebuild done. Never paid always under warranty but due to my job i've hit 90K miles all the above has happened again with 12months and been told no warranty left due to mileage (NEVER EXPLAINED AT ALL) so lost 5.5 years warranty and now my MG dealer wants £3K to repair it ..this includes £1000 to investigate why there is a radio disconnect error...MG is a mess of a company and i cant even get the car working long enough to sell it.. FG Barnes Maidstone is the worst franchise i've come across for cars and service.

Your profile says you own a ZS EV?

Hello Poli, today the car went in to another MG Service centre they ran the car on diagnostics. They advised there are no faults showing on the car and were able to clear the issue with the particulate filter. Car is in perfect working order, despite the initial garage wanting to charge me £1200 for a new filter. The fault you have described is exactly as mine was, red particulate filter warning, amber never displayed and an amber engine light, as you have said the car drove perfectly and never entered limp mode. I did drive the car between the two visits at MG garages and had no issues - although was advised by the initial garage not too and the replacement filter had to be ordered from china so would take 6 weeks to arrive. I hope this helps and good luck with getting your issues resolved.

I dont. I have a petrol Automatic MG ZS. That’s a mistake

How do I change that? Went I to My Profile and edit but can’t change it.

Fixed it. MG ZS Petrol

Got it! 👍

Is it possible for the warning lights to go off by themselves or will they always remain on until they are reset by the garage? So the problem could be fixed but you don’t know until they are reset?

Interesting reading this forum today. My MG XS is 2020 first registered in the Oct, so not 3years yet. My Red particulate filter light came on this morning followed by the engine malfunction light amber. 50 yds from home.
Very poor response from Stoneacre who I have a service plan etc with. Been told not to drive it but they can’t look at it until 20th September. Looking at a £99 investigation fee plus work unless it is covered by warranty but the chap I spoke to was less than helpful or informative
